Review is for the past few years of warehouse sales (online & in person). However, I've loved their shoes & boot styles since they were on Whyte Ave. My cousin & my friend (who I was shipping with today) have bought various pairs over the years. Swears by their longevity & I actually bought my oxfords in a previous sale because my friend talked about how awesome they were to walk with every time I seen them on her. I unfortunately haven't been into Southgate mall, let alone their retail store in a very, very long time. Mostly due to my mobility issues I find the huge walking distance from the closest parking hard on me & have difficulty of walking on the special flooring towards their store (I find I'm slipping when I walk & doesn't matter what shoes I'm wearing). However, if you do get into their store, the staff are always very helpful & willing to set up an appointment to properly measure your feet (as a lot of times as indicated in other reviews, not all sizes are available to try on). Sometimes you can custom order shoes too but the measuring is usually done so in the case of my friend who has many different toes of their shoes, knees what would fit best when the sale comes around. Staff have always answered questions in-person & by phone politely. Today was no different. I needed (for accessibility reasons) to avoid the stairs & have another option on entering the sale floor. Everyone was very accommodating regarding that need & if you're in the same situation, I would advise go directly to the door they're calling the exit. As that is where the ramp is & the staff can check your ticket there just as well as the staff member at the other entrance. I really do love supporting local businesses & I like that they're trying their best to provide alternative shoe shopping options (like the in-person warehouse sale & online feature sales), various fabric & colours on the footwear & various style choices. However, I made a comment today that most of the shoe styles are fitting so much smaller than I thought they would. At first I thought it was my swollen feet (darn heat!) but it ended up being a conversation with my friend and the other ladies around us. It wasn't only me. The shoes are all fitting at least a full size smaller than normal. For some a size & a half. Everyone around us was sizing up at least a full size to try & figure out their fit. There were so many wonderfully pretty heels, flats, mules & boots but if you're spending this amount money, even on sale prices, you want to know you can wear them. For reference, I normally buy at other shoe stores a size 10/10.5. That depends if the shoe is fully enclosed, has straps, has a softer/harder structure &/or how the toe is shaped. Rarely do I buy a 11 as I don't wear really high heels anymore. Definitely surprised when a 11.5 fits me. But today I was trying 12's like that was always my shoe size. So odd but that's how things were created for this year I guess. For the online special sale I participated in a few winters ago, I did a lot of reading about the shoes (as I couldn't go into the store to try things before the sale) & wisely sized up with the shape of the toe & the reviewer comments. So I have gold-like oxfords & a fancier looking, thick pebbled black leather flats that are holding up well (almost for 2 years). Those I bought 11 & 11.5, again from reviewer suggestions & toe shape. I'm happy with those sizes. This wearhouse sale I bought a pair of sandals & flats. They're lovely on my feet, even in the swollen state (very important I can walk as comfortably as possible due to my mobility). Personally, I think pretty shoes should make you not only feel good to wear them but they should be good for your feet too. So I'm happy with my new purchases to add to my collection & will have to remember to really size up if I participate in any future online feature sales or wearhouse events. If you do go to the wearhouse sale, go prepared with types of shoes you'd like to try, maybe even snoop out the reviews about sizing & have an open mind about trying different styles as well as sizing up. You might be surprised like I was how much better the shoe fits. This event was ticketed; you have to have $2 to reserve your spot online. They timed by hour intervals and basically made whomever was in that time slot leave at the end before the next group is allowed to enter (from the huge flight of stairs or in my case, from the exit where the ramp was located). Other products for sale - tights, purses, wallets, leather /or like-leather products, Tofino towels & Kara jewlery (I think only anklets) & also for purchase shoe care products. The ladies at the tills were processing sales quickly & were friendly. We got free shoe bags for our purchases too. Parking is free but limited available spots along & behind building. FYI that street directly where the warehouse is located has construction happening. read more

I have been a long time fan of Poppy Barley, however I've only a been a customer once. I absolutely love their products, and believe the quality is there when it comes to the handmade love in their Leon, Mexico, factory. Not only do they have a gorgeous selection of women's and men's footwear, they now also have gorgeous handbags, wallets, and backpacks. I was gifted a wallet about two years ago and it's still going strong. This year I picked up one of their hobos at the sample sale. My only pair of shoes from them were a made to measure flat. I believe they no longer do made to measure, yet still have that custom made to measure pricing. I do appreciate though that they have quite a few more styles now, and lots of styles of flats. I'd like to get another pair but any time I check the website my size is not in stock, and there isn't even an option to pre-order. At least back when they first started, you could place the order and there'd be a 1-2 month wait. Now not even having the option to order my size seems like not a great business model, but that's just my two cents! Overall, I love supporting a local company, and love that I can trust all items are ethically made and sourced. read more

Okay wow. I had been eyeing the purchase of Poppy Barley shoes for many years now and finally visited the Edmonton storefront location this month. Not only did they have some summer sales going on but I was hopeful that I might be able to score a deal on an outlet pair of boots. Even if I didn't, of course, I was looking forward to having my feet measured such that I could order shoes online later -- I'd rather go to the source of the measurements rather than trust my own measurement skills, after all! The staff person present who welcomed me was exceedingly helpful. She really put me at ease and explained many of the reasons I often have a hard time buying shoes, including foot width, length and calf size. This was exceptionally helpful. Because I was at the physical location I was able to touch and feel the shoes and boots and this was wonderful not just for the smell of the leather but also because I could see the quality of the stitching and understand that the sandal buckles are more user friendly than I expected! I ended up finding a pair of sandals that fit perfectly and lucked out by finding and trying on a wonderful pair of tall boots. I've never had a more pleasant and magical shoe shopping experience ever, and including the cost savings of not having to pay shipping and the sales I essentially got my sandals for the equivalent of free. I also got some great shoe care products to protect the leather on my feet. Poppy Barley is unique as it is an Edmonton company that sells made to measure footwear and now that I know my measurements I'll be certain to keep them in mind for future footwear purchases. But for now I'm super helpful with the shoes I was able to bring home with me from my visit to the bricks and mortar store. When I heard Poppy Barley opened up a storefront on Whyte Ave, I had to check it out! Good thing they have a wooden sign placed on the sidewalk outside the doors as I narrowly missed the door to the second floor, where the store is located. The space is bright and flooded with light, and the displays of beautiful handmade leather shoes makes me drool. The customer service my friend and I received was next to none, with questions answered and the staff ready to measure your feet properly! Love their numerous styles of ladies tall boots (flat & heeled); booties (flat & heeled); and flats. And for men, their styles are clean, classic and modern and also drool-worthy. All their boots are made to order after taking extensive measurements before being sent to Leon, Mexico to be manufactured by hand there. I think their changeover time is about 4-6 weeks depending on season. The great thing is, if the boots/shoes arrive and are not to your liking/fit... Poppy Barley will either refund your money or immediately request a remake, They have a great website that shows their styles of boots and how to order online. They also have a ready-to-wear section for shoes you can order immediately as well! Bottom line, if you're looking for a stylish, well-made quality pair of footwear that will last for years (if taken care of of course), look no further and give Poppy Barley a try. Their prices, although expensive - will ensure each pair of shoes/boots you buy will fit comfortably - you may never buy from another store again! I bought a pair of sandals recently and was shocked at how smelly they were (not a pleasant new leather kind of smell, a harsh chemical smell). I've had them for a couple months now and they still smell. Customer service told me that I must have a sensitivity to smell (which I don't!) I checked out Poppy Barley a couple of months ago because I am in LOVE with their shoes online and have been debating purchasing - but for the cost (incl. shipping) I wanted to try before I bought. Unfortunately, while their showroom does have most styles and sizes, they don't stock anything but their 'normal' width. As somebody with wider feet, I was hoping to try their wide size. I can totally understand if they don't have their wide and narrow sizes in every style and size in their showroom - but they should at least have a couple options to try on in one of their common styles, right? I thought so, but I guess they don't. I was also really surprised that the girl didn't offer to size my feet or anything, considering it's a specialty store that offers custom-sized shoes. Again, in only the normal-width option, she just kept giving me differing lengths of shoe to try on. And when one fit (but was obviously too long), she was just like 'there, that's your size'. Ugh. Anyways, until they offer a few more options to try on in store (otherwise, really, what is even the point of having a showroom to complement your mostly online business???), I won't be purchasing the Poppy Barley shoes I've been coveting. read more

My initial experience was great at the popup store. Measurements and fittings. Two issues: ONE: It was a sizing issue. The sandals I purchased felt great at the store but was uncomfortable after I wore them outside. The problem was one foot was wider than the other and the shoe started digging into my foot. It was too late to return and now I have to see if I can stretch it out. I understand that feet are different but wished that the person measuring my feet noticed the fit on one foot was a little off to the point it will be uncomfortable. TWO: Quality. My friend purchased a pair of men's shoes at my recommendation. Unfortunately, the sole started to fall apart after less than 6 months. He didn't want to send them back (a hassle) so he took it he shoes to an experienced cobbler. They know of Poppy Barley. She liked their designs but commented that they're inexperienced. The upper was fine but the sole was replaced. Maybe the quality of Poppy Barley shoes has improved since it's been over a year but I don't do know if I would buy again. read more

I purchased 2 boots from these guys a year ago and it was a dreadful experience. They were not at all what I ordered and I got horrible customer service over it...but I thought, small price to pay for well made shoes. A year later, both have totally fallen apart. They cost me over $700 together and I feel totally ripped off. I will never purchase anything from this company ever again. They get fail marks in both quality and customer service. Disappointing experience from beginning to end. Customer service for my measurements as well as pick up was lacking. The boots were tough to put on but was told they would stretch out. If I had any problems, just to let them know. After wearing them twice & experiencing pain, I emailed them my concerns. Was told too bad so sad since I had worn them outside. I was never told about their exchange policy in either times I was in their store nor was it printed on the invoice. Apparently we are supposed to just know it's on their website. What was supposed to be a wonderful Christmas gift from my husband turned into a waste of money. The boots aren't even well made. We can see glue on the front of both boots and the back of the left boot doesn't meet up properly with the heel. There's a gap. Honestly, take your money and go elsewhere. read more

I have two pairs of Poppy Barley shoes - a pair of boots that I got at their sample sale in December (7 wide) and a new pair of the Feminine Slipper (6.5 wide; had to have them remade as I ordered a too-small 6 wide). I wanted to give a 5-star review but there were some flaws in my experience. Pros: 1. These are the most comfortable pairs of footwear I've ever owned. Incredibly well made and built with lots of support. 2. Customer service is good - emails to their concierge service were answered within 24 hours. 3. If you don't like your shoes or they don't fit, Poppy Barley will refund you or have them remade for you at no extra charge. 4. Boots are made for athletic calves. I have never found boots that actually allowed me to comfortably tuck jeans into them until Poppy Barley. I have room to spare in my boots. 5. The price is competitive. For what you get, it's actually not terribly expensive. Definitely worth the investment. My new feminine slipper flats were less $$ than my Fluevog flats and are way more comfortable. 6. The sample sale!! By far the BEST deal on well-made shoes - plus, they have ALL sizes and widths and you can try on in their showroom. I paid $100 for a pair of boots that were probably originally $450. The sale was shortly after Christmas and I hope they have another one this year! Cons: 1. They don't have sizes in their showroom to try on unless you're a standard width. The person who helped me (very nice and helpful btw) gave me a size 7 standard to try on and ordered me a 6.5 wide hoping they would fit. Another YELP reviewer mentioned lack of sizes to try on, and it is definitely a flaw. I waited an entire month for my remade flats to arrive and had no idea if they would actually fit. 2. I have a strange foot shape - short toes and a very rectangular foot shape, so even the wide size is still a bit too narrow and will require some breaking in. if you have an unusual foot shape, go in and get measured and try on if you can. Don't order online like I did as the 'fits true to size' is only true if you have a very standard foot shape - be it wide, standard, or narrow. 3. Despite having multiple widths available, don't assume that their flats are made-to-measure. Their widths will not fit everyone. The exception is their boots, which are definitely made to accommodate various calf sizes (yay!). 4. There is a lack of diversity on their website and in their social media - it's mostly very thin, white models. Would be nice to see models of all shapes, sizes, and colours wearing all shoe widths. 5. I got a shipping notification on a Tuesday and did not get a tracking number until the following Monday. I was told "Canada Post is a little slow this week". I am still not convinced this was the case. It would be great to have the option of in-store pick up; I could easily have picked up my shoes from their Whyte Ave location. I had really been looking forward to my first Poppy Barley purchase...Having lived in Edmonton for years (though now moved away), I liked the idea of supporting a local company providing quality women's goods. Sadly, the experience has been totally underwhelming. I ordered on 06 May 2016, pair of shoes and matching wristlet. The website is a bit buggy...showed initially as shoes "instock" (in reg sizes), but then "2-4wks" as i went through the selection process. I wasn't too concerned though, many times sellers slightly over-estimate the time anyways. Got the wristlet, its "OK". Not as high quality as I was expecting at all. The leather is good but not great. The stitching is ok. The overall feel is stiff and standard "mall quality". Definitely not the caliber I was hoping for. Packaging was sloppy, and the dustbag flimsy and already stained for some reason. But what really disappoints is that the matching shoes have still not shipped. I was worried b/c the invoice slip that came with wristlet seems to indicate it had been shipped, but when i went online, the shoes are showing as pending shipment. Now their anticipated ship date is 4-6 weeks post order date (not 2-4 as originally stated). I'm not happy about that, at all! Overall, adequate wristlet of less than expected quality and less then professional packaging and invoicing, shoes unknown and much slower delivery than was provided at time of order. I had high hopes about Poppy Barley but I was extremely disappointed with my order. When I arrived at the store, I was pretty shocked that they abandoned their custom shoe service and were now just charging a very large amount of money for high-end shoes in standard sizes. Nonetheless, I was told that the shoes would fit as if they were custom made based on being measured to my foot. I ordered a pair of mule boots and I was charged a 'made to order' fee even though the shoes were just ordered in a standard size that they didn't happen to carry in store. It took nearly 8 weeks for the shoes to arrive in store and when I arrived to pick them up, they didn't even come close to fitting my foot. The staff made me feel like my feet were abnormal and I was told that these boots just would never fit my foot based on my instep height. After 8 weeks of waiting, I was pretty shocked that they were so dismissive of me as a client. I won't be shopping at Poppy Barley again and I hope they revisit their business model. read more
