Growing up in Falmouth I have spent a lot of time coming to and from this particular dump. This dump allows you to drop off not only grass clippings but leaves and other seasonal yard clippings at no cost. In the past this dump has been amazing because the staff was always making sure the dump piles weren't so massive that it made it difficult to drop off a load. This weekend when I visited I was a bit let down because the town has let this dump slip away a bit. The road into the dump needs to be graded and it was full of potholes. The dump piles were also so large that it made it difficult to find a safe place to drop off while not being in other people's way. Overall, this place has been much better in the past and could definitely get back to that point if the staff gave it a little TLC.

Two different…read more worlds The Hyannis Library is one of the oddest libraries I have ever been in. It started out like most libraries in New England as a tiny place that just kept growing. The original part was a cool 18th century cottage that became the library in 1908. Over the decades new additions and wings were built until the largest and most modern part was added in 1974. All these different rooms and parts gives the library a pleasantly strange character to it. The old parts are absolutely wonderful, with fireplaces and great charm. However as you cross into the newest section things change. No more charm, just a very practical, efficient and modern area. One of the most surprising things that I noticed is the security guard. I don't believe I have ever seen one except in the large libraries in the major cities. He was certainly pleasant and polite enough but his presence gave a whole different feel to the library. Not the mellow and friendly ambiance of the typical Cape Cod library but a no nonsense and pragmatic atmosphere. I was surprised to learn that this library has had some problems in the past that necessitate the presence of the guard. Various assaults and disturbances caused by individuals that used the library as a place to hang out and not for study. In fact I had a rather odoriferous individual ask me for money while I was in the library. That doesn't happen except in much larger libraries in the cities. The librarians were busy and didn't have time to chat and the security guard started looking at me funny so I didn't spend much time in here. This is the type of library to do what you have to do and then leave. The old sections are lovely but as you cross over into the newer parts you are reminded that things aren't always as quaint and tranquil as they seem.

The home of a New Bedford whaling captain built in the mid 1800s, the Penniman House has been preserved as a National Historic site on the Cape Code National Seashore, and the house is just beautiful. We couldn't find info on hours or tours on the website, so we headed out to the Cape hoping that we'd get lucky, but apparently the house is only open T-Th from 1-4, with guided tours on Saturdays. Nevertheless, it was a fascinating visit. The grounds are tiny, though, so don't go expecting some vast tract of land and giant house a la Tory Row in Boston. This was very minimalist as far as European style was concerned, but for a house on the Cape, it's pretty amazing. All of the original details on the moldings are still intact, and peering through the windows, we saw that the old floors and wallpaper had been also preserved. There is also a beautiful carriage house. The most awesome thing about this house has to be the whale jawbone entry gate when you first walk up to it from the parking lot. It's a real sperm whale jawbone painted white and affixed to posts of wood to act as an archway. Minus one star for the weird hours plus scant information on the weird hours online. The Cape Code National Seashore site is confusing as it is; I really think they should maybe look at redesigning their site to make it more accessible. But I definitely recommend the Penniman House as a short stop if you're on Route 6 on your way up the Cape. It's a nice 15 minute break and a great photo op.

Rather than rocks or ledges that threaten ships, muck is the problem. This part of the channel clogs up with mud and many ships have gone aground here. The light was finally built in 1898 and is 53 feet tall. A typical and inexpensive lighthouse, it served it's purpose well until it was decommissioned in 1978. As was common with this type of lighthouse the cast iron foundation was towed out to the proper located and then filled with rocks and cement. Then the top part that housed the keeper was built. A cool little lighthouse that can be seen distantly from land but the best by yak or other small craft. Care must still be taken when going out to the light because although modern navigational aids are now available the muck is still lurking and just waiting to grab your boat
