Terry & her husband are awesome. After becoming disabled and having to sell our home, my family's beloved Nigerian dwarf goats Pip & Lola had to move to my Mother-in-law's. Although she runs a non-profit horse rescue and had more than adequate space and means to care for the goats (she was the one who initially gave us the goats) her disdain for me left them treated like red headed step children (no offense to gingers). She wouldn't allow me to visit them and refused to put anything in their pen for them to climb on (NDG's love to climb). She constantly complained to my Wife about how much she hated them and wanted them gone. This went on for almost a year. After tirelessly searching for a new happy & healthy home and calling every animal rescue and sanctuary I could find I found Poplar Spring. Terry let me know that they were at max capacity but to send pics and info on Pip & Lola and she would help me find them a home. After sending her the info and explaining our situation she offered to go out of her way to make room for them. I reached out (via 3rd party) to the evil Mother-in-law who I thought would be over joyed to rid her herself of them. Of course she couldn't be bothered to use HER animal non-profit's truck, trailer or fuel to transport them to Poplar Spring so Terry & her Husband stepped up EVEN FURTHER and the NEXT DAY drove 2 1/2 hours to pick them up. Terry sent me pictures of them once they arrived and I couldn't contain my emotions. I had felt like I failed these 2 wonderful creatures. I'd still be feeling that way if it wasn't for Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary. Your support and charitable donations couldn't go to a better non-profit. One that GENUINELY cares about the animals. A beautiful, dedicated animal sanctuary that is amazing for individual/group tours, special events, and for learning + inspiring the public about the welfare of animals! I came for an event called "Thanksgiving WITH The Turkeys" and had an amazing time! Very kids friendly. Animals are enclosed in very wide areas and even often roam free through the sanctuary. I'm due with my first child in April and plan to homeschool. I look forward to being my little one here to teach him about animal liberation, welfare, and veganism. I don't have enough good things to say about Poplar Spring. This is a place of pure good - a literal sanctuary for animals who have been abused, tossed aside, and left to die. Even writing this review brings a tear to my eye. The owners are angels on Earth. I went for a visit with my friend this morning and one of the owners, which is comprised of a husband and wife team, led the tour. We also had the opportunity to talk to the very knowledgeable husband about the food industry, etc. As my friend and I walked over to the tour group, we were greeted by friendly goats! As we met the animals, who were all so loving and let us pet and snuggle them, we learned their amazing stories and the horrors they escaped from. It's so sad to hear what people do to voiceless and defenseless creatures, but then to see how far the animals have come is truly outstanding! This is a real life fairytale, and I am obsessed with everything this sanctuary stands for and works for! Many of the animals here are injured in some way, whether they are blind, deaf, missing a limb, etc. There are many cows, sheep, and goats, along with pigs, turkeys, and chickens! You can choose to sponsor an animal of your choice and get a picture of them, then visit them when you come back to the sanctuary! This is a big need for them! I highly encourage everyone to visit this amazing place. You will have to check when they offer tours and events because you cannot just pop in whenever you wish! I've been wanting to visit for such a long time, then earlier this year this place made news all around the world (yes, BBC picked up the story) when a wee little piglet fell off a [presumedly slaughter] truck on a record snowy day in January and was thankfully rescued by a kind Chevy Chase family. Wee Wee the pig is now famous around the world (and has his own FB page to boot)! He may be a star, but it is the couple that runs this animal sanctuary that are the true stars. Funding to maintain and feed over 200 animals comes entirely from donations. No federal, state, or county help is given to assist day-to-day operations. I got to give belly rubs to many lazy pigs and yes, I met Wee Wee and his BFF, Scooter. I saw goats too. I didn't get a chance to hold a chicken; maybe next visit. I came for their annual fundraiser, and man, was it packed! That's a very good thing. I sincerely hope they raised thousands of dollars in donations and from their silent auction that had many wonderful donated items. read more

Great place to take the kids!!! They had a blast! The staff was really wonderful and very interactive. They exude so much patience with the kids. It is an animal sanctuary and practice veganism. They courteously request that if you're going to eat lunch on their premises to pack a vegan lunch. I know pretty much every one knows what that means in case you don't it means no animal product whatsoever including honey. I've never seen so many. Happy animals at one time. They have a deer that swears she's a celebrity and comes out. For the kids to pet her. The pigs look like they're smiling and the chickens will be still so kids can pet them gently. I had been wanting to visit Poplar Springs for a long time. I attended their last Annual Open House and Fundraiser event back in October. Admission was free but donations were strongly encouraged (At least $5). They had free vegan food, desserts, speakers and live music. The sanctuary is on a very large property. We couldn't even get to all the animals. We saw the pigs, goats, lamb, sheep, chickens, turkeys and a gorgeous peacock. I was most looking forward to seeing the cows and the celebrity pigs! And I didn't get to see the cows! So next time around, I have to see them! The animals are pretty friendly and just wander around. If they aren't friendly, the volunteers make sure to let you know so you can keep your space apart. The sanctuary is clean and well kept. The animals are very loved and well taken care of. For large events like this, parking can be difficult. Driving in takes a bit. You are basically driving over gravel roads for awhile before you get close to the actual sanctuary. And if there is a lot of people, you are pretty much blocked in. Also, if you drive a super low city car like me... good luck. But well worth it! You won't regret seeing this sweet creatures. I'd never really hung out with cows before yesterday. With their gentle temperaments and big brown eyes, they're easy to like! One cow cocked his head and clearly loved getting scratched behind his ear. My friends and I also enjoyed nuzzling a brown mule, and we watched a little girl snuggle a contented hen in her arms like a doll. The sanctuary has an adorable young orphan pig, who sleeps every night with a stuffed Winnie-the-Pooh Piglet doll. There's also a slow blind horse who's friends with (that is, he tends to follow around) another horse who wears a bell. We went to Poplar Spring for yesterday's annual vegan potluck, "Thanksgiving with the Turkeys." The food was plentiful and delicious! But even for non-event days, you could schedule an appointment to visit, or even volunteer to help care for the animals. Meeting farm animals can be freaky, because you start to suspect that their suffering is as morally significant as that of pets. We're all horrified when we learn of puppy mills and dogfighting. At the same time, almost all of us tend to be silently complicit when it comes to factory farms. But the animals at Poplar Spring are awfully lucky. At this 400-acre sanctuary, pigs chew straw instead of metal crate bars, chickens stretch their wings instead of getting stuffed into wire cages, and cows graze grassy fields instead of being tethered at the neck. Once you meet the animals here, simple steps, like buying free range eggs, don't feel like much of a sacrifice. I admit this review took a preachy turn. I'm not advocating "animal rights" or even veganism -- but rather treating these creatures with compassion, mercy, and decency. Poplar Spring exemplifies this ethic magnificently. read more

This was my first time as Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, I have always want to visit, however never had the time until now. I'm glad we did! Although is a bit of a drive from my location, i still took the trip to be part of the Open house. Since you arrived you feel a positive energy. It was nice to see the volunteers so dedicated to this animals, they take care of them like family. The animals looked relax and not stress at all. I'm from the country and enjoy the farm animals, I had the opportunity to pet the cows, bigs, etc etc. Also enjoy the conversations with the caregivers they are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I meet the smallest pig, 6 month still, and Emily the cow, despite being blind she was really sweet. The goats were so playful, I wish I was closer to volunteer. I'm glad I was part of it, it feels nice to donate to a honest and dedicated foundation. The weather was perfect, it made is easy to enjoy! Looking forward going back. read more

Wonderful organization dedicated to rescuing abused & neglected farm animals. I've volunteered here and it's very rewarding. You'll work hard & get dirty but it's worth it. These animals are precious and this is a great place to volunteer (or take a tour) with a group or the family. Check out their website as they have events throughout the year. Absolutely loved visiting Poplar. It really was a great experience and knowing that these were all rescued animals make it all the better. They have cows, goats, chickens, pigs, lambs roaming about that are all very friendly. The owners were very caring and knowledgeable about all the animals and were happy to tell the stories behind the animals and how they came to the sanctuary. For people visiting: There's no big sign saying this is the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary, you look for the white mail box and turn in. The green gate will be closed (or it should be closed since there are animals roaming about inside), open the gate and close it behind you then proceed to the parking area. Bring carrots, squash, pumpkins, apples for the piggies and goats to eat. Call ahead to make reservations for a tour. read more

I have enjoyed coming to Poplar Spring's from the first moment I ever experienced it. The love and care that goes into the animals here at the sanctuary is without limits. I have come here for Thanksgiving with the animals as well as their annual fundraiser events. It is always a joy to see the animals that are with special needs and the care that goes into them. It is great to see some of the same old animals that have been here for years enjoying their lives. Kudos to the many volunteers that take their time to care for and love on the animals in their care. They are knowledgeable and super nice every time I've interacted with them. Yesterday's fund raiser was a good time, lovely weather and we scored some great deals in the silent auction. Love love love this place and what they do. read more

Poplar Springs is a vegan farm animal sanctuary that rescues goats, cows, turkeys, chickens, rabbits, horses, and pigs set on a large property in Western Montgomery County. Visiting PSAS is a tremendous experience. The animals are so sweet and wonderful to interact with, and their wonderful staff and volunteers help guide visitors in appropriate interactions with the animals. (It can be scary as a first time visitor to hold a chicken or to pet a turkey!) The goats and sheep are especially friendly and photogenic, while the pigs tend to be like, "whatevs" when you give them belly rubs. Hearing the animals stories can be heartbreaking, but is definitely helpful in understanding the experience. A lot of the animals were once "pets," and then their people realized that having a goat in downtown DC was a bad idea and simply left the goats outside. Other animals were rescued from abusive "organic" farms. Being with the animals is powerful - after holding Audrey, their Japanese silky chicken, and feeling her heart beat against my chest, I vowed never to eat chicken again. The Practical: It takes a while to get to Poplar Springs, because they're way out in the country and the only way in and out is on windy roads, but definitely go and visit if you're in the DC area! Their open house day, which happens one Sunday in the fall, is one of my favorite days of the year. You can also visit by volunteering or can visit your sponsored animal. read more

This is a beautiful place to take your loved ones, or have a rewarding experience alone. Terry the owner puts in a lot of work to ensure the highest quality of life for the animals. She has the backstory and a name for everyone of the 400+ animals. We were really inspired by the farm, and the volunteers and workers. I recommend taking your children here, and teaching them that all forms of life need to be valued. This is a place for everyone, but I sincerely push you to understand the importance and why Terry felt compelled to start this farm. These are animals that have been saved from horrible living circumstances. You get to visit them, give snacks, observe, pet, and cherish them. My girlfriend and I recently visited the Animal Sanctuary as part of Montgomery County's annual farm tour. I'm a city (well, suburban) guy, so it was really a really neat and new experience to see the chickens, roosters, cows, horses, pigs, etc. up close. Some of the cows were huge!
