When I first walked in and saw the battered haddock fish special, I thought maybe we should leave. However, my entire family was actually very pleased with everything we ate there. The meat supreme pizza was shockingly good, the menu offered a wide variety of options and our server was delightful. Indeed there were several people who were eating the haddock next to us, and it smelled shockingly good. They even sold out of the haddock. It's a three because the food was good and the lady that waited on us was an all star. Could Of been a 4 star review but Prior to being seated the staff had enough attitude to earn an old fashioned "B-slap." So to start we decided to have an early dinner Saturday evening. We had heard alot of positive feedback regarding the food and to be honest the food was quite good. We shared a poplar 3 app (fried okra, cauliflower and mushrooms). For dinner I had the chicken fried steak and my sister had the Italian "loafer". Our waitress which I believe her name was Angie saved the night as I wanted to walk out twice based on the way we were treated when we arrived. I'd suggest you get a hostess that can manage the front of your restaurant. The teenager had folks stacked up waiting to be seated when there was plenty of open seating on both sides. When we asked if we need to give someone our name when we arrived the waitress we asked (long sandy brown hair and her eyes were set close together). Her responce was that there was and she was cleaning tables so people had places to sit. Than once the teen with the pissy attitude made it back up front she had to organize the menus as if they were first day editions. I told my sister that if the "see you next Tuesday" waitress that shot me lip was our waitress we were leaving. Luckily this is when the visit made a complete 180. Our waitress was kind, attentive and did an outstanding job. As I said the food was a close second to the waitress. Going forward we may return but it will be probably be for carry out. read more

Someone had recommended the Philly Cheesesteak and I've been craving one so I got one today. They have a sandwich and a loaf. I decided to get the loaf. It was good, I liked the baked bread. I liked the dressing (which is on the side with the loaf) but not with the loaf. I'm thinking Alfredo sauce or marinara might be better with it. read more

Exactly what I expected. Exactly. Coors in cold bottles. Buffalo wings "hot" actually seemed mild and we're not amazing. Normally I would not eat wings, but they advertise, "established Buffalo, NY 1982," so what choice did I have? Fried pickles were .... Well, very nice crust. I mean an amazingly good crust. Clearly, whoever is watching the fryer oil temp is doing a great job, but...I'm not sure I would call these "pickles." They may have just sliced cucumbers!!! No flavor! Took 30 minutes past my pickup time to get my food. I ordered pizza, chicken, and appetizers. They stated they were behind on their chicken orders. I understand that but the problem with that is that they made all my other food before the chicken was started so my other food was just sitting there for 30 extra minutes. Because of that, my pizza was not hot, the crust was soggy, and my onion rings and fried pickles were horribly soggy and cold. The chicken was over-salted. I should have checked my order before I left because they also forgot to give me the baked potato I ordered with my chicken. They gave me the sour cream and butter though! This is the second time I've tried this place. People always rave about their food so I wanted to give them another chance but they failed again. So Poplar, why do you spell your name like that? Does it really have to do with trees that are used for pulp? Do I really care, does it really matter? No and No. Because what really matters here is the food, a dang near 5 star experience. From their menu you'll find a very wide variety of selections. Subs, burgers, seafood, steaks, wings, pizza, fried chicken, "loafers", salads, burritos.. the list goes on but what I came for was the much raved about pizza. And the hype was worth it for me. A tasty, sweet and chewy crust topped a little too lightly with a mild- not too tomato sauce, then a mozzarella cheese burned to gooey perfection, decently covered with flavorful pepperonis. But what really pushed me over the edge was their wings. Two words for ya, CHAR BQ. Wow. Those were beautiful, my tongue rejoiced, they tasted better than something my dad would grill up on the Fourth of July... if he was still good in the kitchen that is. A sweet BBQ sauce was applied, wings were grilled- which equaled some greeeeeat chewy char, and then tossed again in sauce. Without a doubt, I will be back for another go around. Unfortunately, thus far Ive found one very common compliant about Poplar that I even experienced. Wait Time. With a call ahead order I still waited 30minutes longer than my predicted pickup time. Locals, there to pickup or sit down had also been waiting for awhile and from the sound of things, this is a common occurrence. Poplar, get some more kitchen crew or motivate someone already in there and you'll reap the benefits of more customers through your doors. read more

We've been here lots of times the past few years, 5-8 years at least. I've uploaded photos before on @Urbanspoon, so they may be available on @Zomato. Tonight, I forgot to take a photo of the Fried Fish (Haddock) with fries (the 50'-60's vintage wavy long frozen fries) and coleslaw. It's their not-on-the-menu Friday Night Special. Will have to take one next time I am here on a Friday. Unfortunately, these are not the authentic "Fish and Chips" like we enjoyed all over Ireland our last two trips there - the "Chips" aren't hand-cut, and I guess the coleslaw is instead of the "smashed garden peas" (or squished, whipped blended - we saw the garden peas labeled a variety of ways while in Ireland.). I made a pleasant discovery today - I've never enjoyed their coleslaw as it is much too sweet. Today I spiked it with about a teaspoon or two of the malted vinegar (optional to eat with the fish, to cut the greasiness and head off heartburn), and gave it a righteous stir. The coleslaw was improved immensely, in my opinion. Teenager loved his NY style pizza and hubby loves his Philly style "loafer". A loafer?? This would be roughly equivalent to a calzone, only made in dough formed in a folded rectangular shape, rather than a traditional half-moon shape of a calzone. It's good - I have had them before, as well as regular sub sandwiches, the chicken dinner, the salad (not their long suit, but oh well.). This is one of those "something for everyone" family dining, for when one family is dieting and wants a grilled chicken with broccoli or some such, and the other family wants pizza or fried chicken or the fish like I had, or steak. They have a website and a menu. It's not "Haute Cuisine" but it isn't "Golden Arches Supper Club" either. read more

Love Poplar's. We found Poplars right after we moved here in Dec. 2014. It's our happy place to have lunch or dinner. Love the chicken, pizza, anti pasta salad, apps. Our granddaughter loves it too. Wow, what a surprise, pizza was delicious! Crust was floppy yet had good crunch. We ordered a meatball pizza which had huge meatballs cut into slices. Very good. Good amount of sauce so if you like light sauce maybe ask for that. Also ordered mushroom and pepperoni pizza, mushrooms were from a can (disappointing) could have used more pepperoni. Also ordered cheese bread and it was good, basically a hoagie cut in half with lots of cheese and seasoning, broiled, tasty though. Three stars for this visit because our order took longer than promised for takeout and the mushroom and pepperoni comments above. We will return for the meatball pizza. read more

If you are looking for the best fried chicken ever then you need to come here and check it out!!! After months of hearing people rave about this place I finally tried it and understand why they say this place is as good as it gets. In addition, they do a great job making their pizza, must be the quality of cheese or something! So stick to pizza and fried chicken if you want to know you ordered right your first visit here. I love fried chicken and have tried it a lot of places and they really outdid their selves on the quality. When you first walk in you get the feel instantly of old fashion home cooked meal presentation. From start to finish I enjoyed my meal. Even though I try not to eat anything gluten I still crave their fried chicken over other places. Don't waste your time on KFC or any other big chain. You arrive at the Poplar Restaurant after having driven way out of town, far from any other restaurant. Should this not work out, you're left pretty high and dry. After some confusion you figured out that it's on the backside of a beer store. You walk in, you can't believe you drove here for this. Everything in this place is aesthetically unappealing, from the lighting to the "decor" to the tshirts the servers wear to the, well, even to the clientele. This is worth your time? You may ask yourself, a la David Byrne, My God, what have I done? Then you order some char bq wings, a pepperoni pizza, and an Italian "Loafer." Maybe you get some fried chicken. The Loafer (TM)--come on, it's a stromboli (you wanna trademark that? You godda be kidding) is by far the most beautiful thing you will see in this restaurant. And it tastes as good as it looks. The pizza is arguably the best in town now that Bartelli's is closed and Picasso's can't make a decent crust (yes, it's better than Knolla's). Most of the wings are run of the mill, but the char bq wings, those are great. Let's leave it at this--you've now ordered pretty much the only things on the absurdly hulking menu that they make freshly. And those four or five things are so beautiful that the rest of the experience is worth the trouble, visual or otherwise. read more

While Poplar was on my radar for while, I didn't really consider it a priority until the foofarah from Picasso started last month. Then one boring Saturday afternoon I was sitting around contemplating possible dinner options and saw the proprietors were from Buffalo. If there's one thing Buffalo, NY knows, it's wings. If there's another thing, it might be pizza. I jumped in my car and drove out of town. The biggest thing you should know is that image that you have in your head when you think pizza and wings restaurant? Forget it. The population that packed the place even on a Saturday night was largely older folks and families. And no one was eating pizza nor wings. Rather, they seemed focused on the fried chicken. Okay, it's still chicken and it's still fried, so we're still in wings territory, so I ordered ten of THE HOTTEST WINGS THEY HAVE. Also, a slice of pizza. Given the crowd, I wasn't expecting the wings to be particularly hot even at their maximum, and it turned out to be a good guess, amounting to a flavor that is overall very consistent with traditional buffalo sauce. It paired well with the big, whole wings, which at ten pieces was enough to serve as a meal. Rest assured, the Buffalo (place) continues to live through those buffalo (wings). Buffalo buffalo Bufallo buffalo. Less impressive was the pizza, which - though the dough was made fresh, the sauce was blahdy blah - a style best categorized as 'generic', and not really worth my time. I noticed Poplar offered 'Texas toothpicks' on the menu, which is a dead giveaway of their reliance on Sysco products - so much so that I was not the first person to actually bring it up in my party. Still, it's not like I expect Poplar to go out and slaughter the chickens themselves, so it's not a particularly big deal depending on what's ordered. What's more important is that, despite their heritage, they're a restaurant frequented by Andoverans who are looking more for comfort food than anything else. read more

Nothing like paying $32.00 for 2 cheese burgers and a kids meal. No drinks. We did get two pieces of pie. The cheeseburgers were good. The fries were cheap crinkle fries(hardly any there) that are mostly the butt ends. Disgusting. Onion rings were good however, like the fries there is about 7 of them. The pies had about 1/2 inch of the filling and the rest whipped topping. If we had paid 20 bucks for this meal, then I wouldn't complain about it but $32...get real. read more
