This contrast has been made even further lately with the major renovations at NTP where Armani, Buberry and Bally are all present in a place where people used to come to get pots and pans. This is the reality of the new Hong Kong I guess. Shatin Centre, despite its makeover, is still the neighbourhood shopping centre with the large number of small, non-chain stores. Here you will find old shoe shops (the ones where we used buy school shoes from- if you grew up here you know what I mean), small jewelers who don't cater for oligarchs like the major chain these days. There is also a disproportionate amount of personal care product retailers here which I can only presume is a strategy of the management company. You will also find fast food joints, and just cheaper restaurants as opposed to NTP nearby. When I was younger I didn't care for such things as NTP just seemed the cooler and nicer place to be. Nowadays though, all shopping centres are identical and as such, malls with little shops like this place makes for a more special experience. You don't have to fight with tourists (as much) here because the shops here are just too low brow for them. Which is just like for a skint like me.

There's a mix of stores in the mall, with most of the restaurants located on the ground floor (sushi, pizza, Shanghai food, Tai Hing, McDonalds, Thai restaurants). The 2nd floor is usually typical mall stores - clothing stores, make-up stores, Apollo ice cream store, massage chair store, Saint Honors bakery, Ming Garden dim sum restaurant. What I can't believe is how long Nathan Road goes all the way through Hong Kong and yes iSQUARE is one of them and was the closer access from our hotel. What honestly caught our eye are the many signs informing you of what's inside and it was Miniso. The cuteness overload was just so hard to resist and though there are many other biz, restaurants and even movie theater time and lack of energy has us being very selective and we did browse around a bit not really knowing the other shops that was there and getting around with some floors using the escalators while some was accessible by elevators was quite exhausting. If they had better directory so that we knew exactly where to browse we'd might've stayed longer but then again thankfully we didn't as this shopaholic had quite a full luggage. Thank you!

However, this shopping centre gets intensely packed. We visited on a Monday, and it was still way too crowded inside. The combination of the heavy crowds and the unique spiral layout actually made me feel a bit dizzy while navigating the floors. On the plus side, there is a great variety of shopping options, from upscale retailers to trendy boutiques, along with a movie theater and plenty of standalone restaurants. That being said, the actual food court area felt surprisingly small for a mall of this scale. We ultimately didn't spend much time here because it was a bit overwhelming, and we preferred to walk around the vibrant open-air spots nearby in Mong Kok. It is worth a quick look for the design, but be prepared for major foot traffic.

There's a reason why the crowds aren't piling into this mall, there really isn't that much to see here. There used to be a nice coffee shop upstairs that I enjoyed going to, that was the only place where I didn't have to fit off 10 people for a table, however since the coffee shop closed, I never really set foot there anymore. There's nothing to see, the shops are overflowing with mainland Chinese (namely Louis Vuitton and Chanel). It kind of defeats the purpose of going into a shopping mall. I believe they went through a bit of renovations a few years ago, possibly a rebranding exercise, I don't see much difference. I think they could possibly do a little better positioning the mall. The shops itself are decent, just for some reason, they haven't managed to bring the right crowds.
