What to do when one is hungry and ones fridge is empty? Walk around the corner to the local Asian Supermarket....of course! Thien Phat is my 'local', and I admit I only go there when I can't be knotted driving to a better one. It is a small store with an equally small stock base, but it still carries what I need most of the time. There is also a small butcher and fresh veg area, but I generally stick to the noodles and frozen steamables!

Normally when I'm preparing a meal like the one above I'll visit this Asian grocer. It's pretty much just up the road for me, and while there are better stocked and friendlier stores around I guess I'm just a slave to convenience. That's the sad thing about the place. The staff seem very indifferent to you unless you speak their language. I've stood at the counter for sometimes up to 10 minutes because the person serving is speaking to the customer in their native tongue. It's never anything serious either as it always comes across as pleasant. Now I don't really care what language they're speaking (I'm an ESL teacher, so I understand how life can be dealing with another culture), but I do take issue to being forced to wait and then whisked out the door when it eventually becomes my turn. The store is well stocked, though it's a little smaller than other stores a little further out. Either way I manage to get my cooking needs here at good prices. I'm not a major stickler for customer service and it really does take a lot for me to notice, but I do notice this.

Fruit and veg shops have been suffering for years to stay in business with the supermarket giants…read morefrequently undercutting them. With that said, it's refreshing to see a recently opened fruit and veg market like George and Ben's. Out the front you have your "seconds", that is fruit and veg that isn't of the highest grade. A lot of fruit and veg stores do this, and there's nothing wrong with 90% of this fruit. I personally buy from the front of the store if I need some cheap fruit to make a smoothie with. As my girlfriend is on a diet I'm required to comply and join her lest I face her wrath. I have no problems doing this and that's probably in my best interests... Anyway, enough about that... Venture inside and you'll see "the good stuff". Fresh fruit and vegetables representing all the colours of the rainbow. Not only do they have some quality merchandise, but they encourage the use of boxes rather than putting the items into a plastic bag. There's nothing wrong with being environmentally friendly!

The front half is an Asian take away, while the back is an Asian supermarket. I have to say I admire the owners for mixing these two ideas. Then again, maybe they just couldn't agree on what they wanted, restaurant or supermarket. The take away food is nice, but it's only available from 11AM onwards. When you think about it, this makes sense as it works out to a bit before lunch time anyway. Like all Asian grocers they offer a slightly different variety of stock to the other places. I'm just happy I now have somewhere local to buy Choco Pies. If you've never had these Korean delicacies before then you must buy them. So that's Queen Phoenix. There is everything you could possibly want--candles, jams, sauces, dukahs, wines, plants, cakes, clothing, bric-a-brac, handicrafts, art, wood turning, jumble, garden and farm tools, jewelry, toys, food and so much more. Everyone is very friendly and happy, and it's a very positive sort of place. Prices of items vary enormously, which is understandable considering the variety of items for sale. Wide eyed, unable to breath properly from heart palpitations because "can't talk...too excited..." This place has gathered everything I love about Adelaide and plonked it into the trendiest warehouse shed thing at the back of IGA on Gilbert St. It's even run by the same SA family! Every Sunday from 9am-2pm this shed will open its doors to stallholders who want to sell their wares. From bakers to vegan cafes, coffee shops, seedling stalls and more this little collective of organic, vegan, raw and healthy food is all a bit too much for me. Want to try some kombucha? Hells yeah! How about a freshly steamed mussel from the coast of SA? Ok! It's like a farmers market but smaller, less crowded (not for long I'm sure) and is 5 minutes from my home so wins 5 stars in my books. So why only 4 stars then? I do think there needs to be more fresh fruit and veg options and a bit more diversity in stalls for people like me who want to do their week's shop here (ie. 3 bakeries in the one small location is a bit much). I am officially signed up as a Market Member already and for $20 per annum you get invited to private events at The Shed, receive discounts at stalls and a cool chopping board for progressive tasting plate specials from stalls each weekend. So if you have nothing to do next Sunday and want to see a spectacle, come on down to the Market Shed to see your resident pug faced, over excited local shopping, slurping coffee and getting her organic on.

There in only it's third market I found a variety of stalls & very enthusiastic producers - all of whom were willing to spend the time with every customer. A face-painter (only $3!) and musos at each corner of the space added to the enthusiastic vibe - tangible despite a couple of summer showers that may have kept larger hoardes of customers away. Despite it's small(er) size (of comparative markets such as the Adelaide Farmers Showgrounds Market) of 20-30 stalls, the array of stalls and the promises of more to come (think weekend evening members activities) have got my vote. Visit during 2013 to become a member for an amazing introductory price of $20 & support Adelaide's newest market with an organic, artisan & community focus!

With a huge range of fresh frozen seafood from international and national waters and a great selection of whole fish, fillets and marinara mixes we always come here to do our fish shopping. The staff are incredibly helpful and will take the time to find the best piece of fish for you (as well as recommend serving sizes if you are entertaining). Product sells out quickly on Saturdays so it is worth getting in early for the best cuts. However, if you go 1 hour before close all fillets are normally half price! I love that most of the fresh fish is sourced from SA (where they can) and the prices are so reasonable and often better than your supermarket stock. If you're doing some last minute entertaining then this is the place to go, with a range of dips, crackers, seasonings and even lemons in store to add to the perfect Saturday dinner!

These days it's a world apart, in fact strolling through the store just before Christmas I'd have to say it's one of the better seafood stores in Adelaide now - a tremendous range of fresh and snap frozen fish and seafood, and some truly beautiful prawns. Plenty of staff were on hand, partly due to the proximity to Christmas, I imagine, but they've worked out a good flowthrough for the store - and have all the associated extra's you're likely to need to prepare the produce - garlic, ginger, spices, oils, sauces, coatings abound as you approach the row of checkouts. Parking is good - for the silly season long weekends of Christmas & Easter it gets a little hectic, but otherwise there's plenty of space in the car park, even at it's busiest on Saturday mornings.
