All achey and dirty from camping, we stopped by here for an elevenses treat…read more Good call. A bright, airy room looking out onto the bustling high st. A long queue at the front - a reassuring sign. In front of us a display cabinet choc full of robust and tasty treats. Being in the holiday mood I playfully asked the server what she recommended. She said everyone comes fro the ham hock pasties but even for me it was a bit early to go full on like that. We ordered a fruit danish and a bun with icing on top. The fruit danish, was light, crispy and fruity zingy. Made with love and care. Pretty, delicate, scrumptious. The bun with icing on delivered more than it promised, for when biting into it, strawberry mousse filling introduced itself to my mouth. A wonderful surprise. The bun dough was chewy and stretchy and the filling gave it a luxurious hint. Both cakes were a lot of fun. I regret not having come a little later for lunch and trying their range of pasties and sausage rolls which made the counter groan. They were flying out like the hotcakes I chose instead. If they are anything like the standard of our choices they will be excellent.

More than once, I have been in the store as the clock struck 9pm for closure as I waited for the reduced items, I have had the security guard give me filthy looks (rather than politely remind me of the time), and as I have left the store, when there are no other customers present, the staff put the REDUCED ITEMS OUT FOR THEMSELVES TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF. I even had a bunch of flowers snatched off me by a member of staff before 9pm which she then took to the check out and bought herself. Shockingly self-serving store, and the managers fully support the staff in the illegal practice of hiding reduced items for their own benefit. Shame on you Waitrose, the behaviour of your opportunistic staff in this store is an embarrassment!

There is a great instore butcher, who is very keen to help you try something new or recommend cheaper cuts and how to cook them! Let's face it, Waitrose is quite an expensive place to shop, but they have started doing dine in for £10 and they have a nice selection of food included! If you like fish, the fish counter is appealing but not as friendly as the butcher! There is an instore bakery, but i'd rather use the bakers across the way! If you need a break after shopping the cafe by the entrance is reasonably priced and worth a look, very child friendly! I find it hard to shop in here as although the aisles are wide, it has a somewhat claustrophobic feel to the store. They are best known for their high quality hand-made fudge, which comes in a dizzying array of styles and flavours: some even have Smarties, chocolate chips and and other sweets embedded in them. I'd recommend some of their classic flavours: chocolate and orange fudge comes essentially as two fudges joined together: the orange is intensely orangey, and the chocolate very chocolatey.
