Here's the funny history behind the "Bridge of the Fists":
Back in the Repubblica Serenissima days, Venetian clans would engage in massive brawl. One clan would stand on one side of the bridge, and another on the opposite. Fighters will be go all-out with their fists on the bridge - Hence the name "Bridge of the Fists"! If you think I was kidding, look for the footprints at the bridge ends where fighters were standing by for their turns.
Today of course, instead of fights, you'll see a passing crowd in the morning or a celebrating crowd that either overflowed from the festive Campo Santa Magherita or from the nearby Osteria ai Pugni (which is a good eat, by the way) in the evening. Without knowing the history, you may pass by this like it's just a footbridge without a second thought, but now with this knowledge, take a glance into this strange piece of history as you pass by!
It's a much more casual area to chill nowadays anyway compared to back in its older days! read more
