Perhaps it's my fault for going on the last day, but Polish Fest, it seems to me that you've really let yourself go. What happened to the days when you had the whole run of the festival grounds? Today, you are a shell of your former self. Concentrated in just the middle section of the park, even that amount of room seems too much for this festival. To start with, the "cultural" tents were cramped as if 10 exhibitors were shoved into a tent that holds 6. There should have been more tents to accommodate foot traffic. One tent, which briefly explained the history of Poland and it's people, not only had empty tables in it, but everyone was doing what we did: poked our head in, looked around and moved on. Other than the lady using wax to decorate eggs, there were really no distinctly Polish folk arts being displayed. Wood carving and black smithing are found in multiple cultures...I would have liked to see more on the history of amber jewelry...Where do they get the amber from? How do they decide what makes a good piece of amber to use? How do they cut/shape/smooth the amber into shapes? Ditto on the pottery. The stuff is beautiful and expensive, so explain to me the whos, whats and whys of it. The good? Polish animals on exhibit. Seriously! There were groups showing and touting the merits of a Polish dog, rabbit and chicken breed. The music was classical or polka, depending on where you went. One band we listened to did perform some well known songs of the '60s, but then went into a mix of their own original and traditional songs. Are there no Polish rock songs/bands? Don't get me wrong, I like both classical and polka music, but isn't there more in the Polish culture? The shopping wasn't much to speak of: novelty t-shirt vendors, jewelry tables, and a lot of non-Polish items. There WERE actually two vendors for the pottery, which was a surprise, but then there was a booth for Bath Fitter? WTH? The food was ok, but I wasn't about to try anything new here; I'd rather go to an actual Polish restaurant to do that. I would go again next year, but I guess I'm going to have to go on a Friday or Saturday. I hope that makes a difference. 81/2015

I love this ethnic-fest, the food, the polkas, the traditional costumes, it's really fun. The only thing that makes it not worth the money is parking, so ride your bike or the bus down here.

We had a blast watching old people watch young people dance. It was cold, and only the young dancers smiled. I bought a Polska sweatshirt, and now people ask me Polish stuff, and then I have to explain stuff. Oops. Food was mostly great, and beer makes everything superdupes! Thanks, Poland.

I love Polish Fest. On the plus side : 50 Friday before 5 pm & $5 after 5 pm on Friday. Plus numerous ways to get in on the cheap. On the bad side: Food is very expensive which limits me on what to but. Entertainment seams to be the same thing year after year. Parking can be expensive unless your lucky in finding street parking. Polish Fest is getting smaller and smaller and more expensive as the years go on and having it on the Summerfest Grounds does not help at all.

    Dancing!

I read the "Bronze Fonz" statue is in Milwaukee because the popular TV sitcom Happy Days, which starred Arthur "Fonzie" Fonzarelli, was set in 1950s Milwaukee. However, we walked and walked and walked, and I never found him. We saw another strange set of Riverwalk statues. I'm glad we came back in the morning and found the Fonz. We hit up the installation every year, and the fourth annual event in 2020 had more than a few stellar pieces. Standouts were Nari Ward's Apollo/Poll neon, Alex Katz Park Avenue Departure, pieces by Thomas J. Price and Julian Opie, and Tony Tasset's Blob Monster was a visual show stopper. There's plenty of signage to help you learn about the artwork, and with pieces installed from MAM to the Wisconsin Center, it's a nice easy two mile round trip walking tour. Audio Tours and even a musical audio pairing can be found on Sculpture Milwaukee's website. Guided docent tours or trolley tours seem to be offered from time to time, as well as curated virtual talks with the artists. I told him I had seen the video on Vice and had seen him on the news (not really even sure if I was in Wisconsin when I first saw him in the media). I told him I was still kinda new to Wisconsin and that I'm a contemporary Vagabond. He was more than happy to tell me about the history of Milwaukee. The whole experience was really REALLY COOL!! He is 110% intelligent, respectful, and true to keeping it real. Most people out there nowadays do not want to do any kind of research, and unfortunately, fall for all kinds of nonsense when that all could have been avoided had they just done at least a little bit of research on their part. I enjoyed learning about the history of Milwaukee as well as the sound advice he shared with me. One of the best things about meeting and chatting with Milverine is he reminded me of the simple fact that it's always worth the while of doing a lil bit of research when you hear something, anything and especially before making an important discussion that'll have an impact on your life. I have nothing but mad respect for the man. If Milverine is reading this, I just want to say, Many Thanks!!

Milwaukee is lucky - we've got Freeway, Milverine, the late Dick Bacon and of course, Brother Ron driving the Godmobile. There have been several iterations of the famous Godmobile over the years - generally all of them are total beaters and most have been station wagons. They start out subtle, with just a few bible verses and sayings painted on them but eventually the current Godmobile becomes a rolling art project - completely covered in verses, sayings, a giant megaphone, creepy baby dolls, a sandwich board and sometimes those giant plastic candles you put in your yard on Christmas. You can expect to see Brother Ron all over town - mostly cruising up & down Wisconsin and Water but sometimes you might see him parked at the McDonalds on South 27th St. Itinerant preachers gotta eat too, I guess. My favorite Brother Ron/Godmobile story comes from a former co-worker: he claims that he was in line behind Brother Ron at Leon's Custard and dude's total came to exactly $6.66 and the man FREAKED out and left. No Satan Custard for him! Anyway, I like to appreciate the Godmobile for what it is - a little piece of what makes Milwaukee unique.
