On March 21st, 2025 My wife, Jessica Bowerman received a voicemail from Dr. Miles stating an…read morealtercation took place between my son, Lafeomia Elias Bowerman, and a young lady. Voicemail- Dr. Miles called me back at 3:02pm after calling her at 2:47pm. Dr. Miles explained she did not know what lead up to the incident happening but that video evidence looked as if they were playing, the young lady struck Eli with a hoodie, and Eli turned around and slapped her. I asked Dr. Miles at what point was my son suppose to be able to defend himself to which she replied "when there is no other option." I further prompted Dr. Miles to give an example of when defending one's self would be appropriate. She gave the example of two young men in a restroom, one cornered with no way out, would qualify as self defense. I agreed to disagree with Dr. Miles but thought the punishment was appropriate due to the allegation my son had slapped a young lady. I got home from work around 3:45pm and spoke with my son and he explained he had been racially slurred and struck twice with a hoodie by the young lady. I sent Dr. Miles a message on "Class Dojo" explaining my concerns. She did not reply on class dojo. Later that evening, of March 21st, 2025, Dr. Miles gave me a phone call at 7:17pm. She was apologetic for not relaying that a racial slur had taken place leading up to Eli slapping the young lady. She stated she had merely 'forgotten' about the racial slur that lead to the young lady being physical. She insisted Eli did not act in self defense but only retaliated to being verbally, and physically assaulted by this young lady. She was adamant that Eli should have continued to just walk away and tell someone in administration. I vehemently disagreed with Dr. Miles throughout the conversation to no avail. It's my belief that my son acting in self defense and did not 'slap' young lady out of any anger or vitriol. March 24th I went to the school around 7:15am to speak with Dr Miles. She lied about keeping the punishments discreet stating that she gave Eli's punishment to him while in front of the young lady and sent him on his way while handling the young lady separately. When confronted with the handbook not stating what is or isn't self defense she deflected. Eventually she conceded we would not agree and directed me to Mr Akiona. We spoke and he was in agreement with Dr Miles in the idea that Eli should have kept getting hit until he could find someone to tell. I refused to let them put my son through "in school suspension" and checked him out. They changed my son's punishment to out of school suspension due to me refusing to let them put him through in school suspension. I submitted a grievance form through Cleveland middle as well as obtaining a copy of the incident report which states "When leaving third core, Student I called Student K a slave and sling her hoodie towards him. Once out of the class room and in the hallway, Student K slung her hoodie again( possibly hitting student I with it this time). Student I then smacked student K in the face." Although Dr Miles made several mistakes in her incident description anyone with a decent amount of common sense can realize she got the students, I and K switched around toward the end of her brief incident report. I've reached out to Jeff Elliott who's is the Dirext of Cleveland City Schools as well as Doug Moore, who is the director of student services and handles student discipline and safety. I only seek for my child to be treated fairly and to not be harassed and attacked. I refuse to let my son be a victim. That includes the young lady that verbally and physically assaulted my son, as well as the administration that decided to punishment my son for defending himself from racist bigotry and physical attack. I look forward to Cleveland Middle School rectifying the situation, although I have doubts they take racism and physical abuse seriously. Lofemoia Bowerman
