Pokataroo reminds me a little of its neighbouring store, Cactus One. The clothing is expensive and well-made, but generally catering towards the more mature woman with a lot of money.
There's usually a few youthful and gorgeous dresses, skirts and/or pieces of jewellery in the store window that look perfect for formal occasions or dinner parties. Such pieces tend to be just funky enough to tempt you to come in. Like Cactus One, however, these showcase pieces are a little misleading.
Much of the store features loose-fitting, conservative and formal clothing with a high price tag, and as is the case with Cactus One, many browsers of this store are adult mother-and-daughter couples or middle-aged women.
The sales rack out the front is one of the more confusing features of the store. The clothing here looks like someone took it from the change room at Big W before the staff had re-shelved the unwanted stock. The material is of lower quality and the prints are generally unappealing.
Don't get me wrong - if someone forced $1,000 on me and ordered me to spend it here, I could come out with a couple of nice formal dresses and maybe even a piece of funky jewellery, like a detailed gold necklace.
Unfortunately, the chances of someone holding a gun to my head, thrusting a grand into my hand and ordering to "buy whatever you want from here - now!" seem slim.
I'd probably even enjoy the clothing, once I got over the trauma of being held at gunpoint. read more
