If, like me, you're the sort of person who believes that wine and near-continuous intake of bread,…read moremeat and cheese are the only things we really need in life, then let me just take a second to congratulate you on making it to this Yelp page. After a turbulent start to our first trip to Aix-en-Provence in which our cab driver exited the vehicle mid-trip to brawl with a band of local youths (with our back-seat protests and gentle reminder to turn off the meter sadly unheeded), Le Vieux Tonneau was in the right place at the right time for we weary travelers in grave need of a bucket of wine. The charcuterie and cheese platter that was set in front of us after a short wait may very well be the closest thing to a religious experience I will ever have. It took me a long time to learn how not to openly weep when in close proximity to brie, but this one really tested my emotional fortitude. Don't be surprised if you find yourself, as I did, forgiving the bartender/meat-slicer his trespasses--ahem, man-bun--in tacit recognition of the beautiful spread he will put together for you. The wine was red and that's all I have to say about that. Also, hat tip to the waiter who must have seen the two of us trying to ration off our last slice of bread like we were on the freaking Mayflower and promptly came to our rescue with an extra basketful. Merci, sir. Merci. Pro tips: When others call LVT a "hidden" gem, believe them. Google Maps is dead to me after the wild goose chase into all the nooks and crannies of Aix it sent us on in search of this place. Best to just pinpoint Rue des Chaudronniers on a map and dust off the old-fashioned (#rip) walk-until-you-find-it method. And one final word to the wise, be prepared to break out your New York elbows in order to secure a table on a Friday or Saturday night. I won't say for certain that the couple that arrived after us and who we nearly bowled over on the way to an open table was bordering on elderly, but they weren't NOT old. They definitely had some fight in them, though.

Otherwise, smaller groups can enjoy a cozy ambiance upstairs by the bar or out on the patio. If you're a little hungry, the cheese plate is divine.

We just had the best meal since coming to France at Le Jardin d'Amalula (The Garden of Amalula)…read more When we asked the owner what Amalula means, she said it is a contraction of the first names of her daughters: Amandine, Lucile, and Laurine. Laurine is the chef. The outside of the restaurant is inconspicuous; in fact, we walked right past it. But you walk down a corridor, through a small courtyard, and then into the small restaurant. But it's the garden out back that is beautiful. That's where we sat. My wife had Le Provençale, a tartine (toast) with bush cheese, red fruits jam, dried figs, dried tomatoes, and parma ham (like prosciutto). Delicious! I chose the plat du jour based on the owner's recommendation. Not sure what it's called but it was a tartine with tuna tartare & passion fruit, chutney with mango, pineapple, & red pepper, slices of avocado, and orange zest with pink berries. I don't know how they do it. Amazing flavor combinations. Glad we found this place with plenty of time to go back another time or two. Highly recommend!

Hummm, I think Yelp failed us with this recommendation but Trip Advisor has the most honest…read morereviews. We decided to try it out anyway. You can't go off "stars" alone. You have to read some of the reviews and see for yourself what the talk is about. We walked over and without reservation, scored a seat in the patio. Our 3 course meal was 20 euro but it none of the dishes were memorable. The dishes had a home cooked feeling, as if you could make the dishes at home, but nothing tasted out of this world. My bf got the short ribs and I got the baby chicken. Neither dishes were that great. Dessert was probably the best part of the meal. I probably would not return. For those who do not know the language: Owner speaks English. Waitresses know little English.

Not sure what "SCI Charlotte" refers to. This restaurant is called, variously,…read moreResto Charlotte, Chez Charlotte, or Restaurant Charlotte, at least online, as far as I can tell. On the other hand, there's no actual sign or label at the unassuming entrance on rue des Bernardines -- which could generously be called a side street but almost borders on an alley. This is NOT your typical restaurant in touristy Aix-en-provence. We sought it out because a website described it as the sort of place that the Aixoise would go. Well, that may be, and I certainly would not blame them, but there were plenty of tourists there when we dined on a weekday. (They basically open at 8pm, a more French dining time, while most establishments in the city accommodate touristic tastes and open as early as 7. In fact, our rather entertaining waiter seemed to speak French, English, and German fluently (to hear him banter with nearby tables) -- although he couldn't manage Mandarin. How to describe the food? "Unpretentious" would be accurate but maybe slightly misleading. It is a fantastic deal for a full meal compared to most sit-down restaurants in Aix. Expect well-executed, classic but un-fussy French cuisine in a pleasant outdoor courtyard. The vibe is fun, even on a less crowded evening. The two of us had the summer special gazpacho (amazing, and quite spicy) and the chicken liver pate (also very good) for entrees. Our main courses were a steak and a fillet of veal, both served with french-fry-like hash browns and haricot verts. A plum clafoutis and a nicely caramelly tarte tatin rounded out this meal -- very traditional bistro fare. (Both desserts were tasty, without being mind blowingly good or especially original.) At 40 Euros (tax + tip included, of course) for two people, including one glass of house red and one coffee, I think Chez Charlotte's menu might be the best deal in Aix.

I stayed at this hotel on Wednesday 31 August for a wedding and forgot my @thevampireswife dress in…read morethe room when we checked out at 12pm. I called the hotel at 15:00 and the man at reception said no dress had been found. I asked him to check the wardrobe in the room where I left it. He said he would go and ask housekeeping and check and call me back. I called him again and he said he could not find a dress. I then asked if he went to the room to check and he said yes. I asked him to please check again and he said he'd call me back. I then called and he said no dress but he couldn't get into the room because guests had been there. So he had previously lied to me when he said he checked the room. I then called again on Friday morning and spoke to Paul who accused me of lying about the dress in the hotel. I undeniably had the dress at the hotel and it went missing. Paul was extremely rude and refused to acknowledge that the dress may have been stolen by someone in the hotel. Worst hotel I have stayed at and Paul should be reprimanded for his behaviour. This hotel is extremely suspicious and unhelpful, overpriced and I have been a victim of crime there. They were unhelpful from the beginning and made no effort to help me as a guest. My dress has likely been stolen and the hotel (in particular Paul) has tried to blame me for this, which was complete insanity. Avoid this hotel at all costs.
