Is it bad to have so many liquor store reviews on my profile?…read more I actually really like this place. They have a very good beer selection, including a lot of microbrews and locals (though they don't have Dark Horse - boo), and their prices are reasonable on the standard stuff like Miller Lite. I'm definitely no wine expert but they have a crapload of wine choices, aisles and aisles and aisles! And the liquor selection is seriously off the hook. If it exists, they have it. Ceiling to floor, wall to wall, and behind the counter too. Wow! I have been wanting to learn how to make a good mai tai, something tells me they'll have everything I need. They also have ceiling-to-counter protective plexiglass, which makes you wonder if they've had problems up there or if that's a holdover from when Ferndale used to be shadier (it's practically in Pleasant Ridge, please). They also have what looks like a wide selection of dirty magazines and porno movies in the front corner of the store, right next to the window! So, feel free to browse if you want everyone walking by to snicker! That's why I didn't browse, so I can't comment on the selection there. It sure looked like a lot, as I snickered my way out the front door while pretending not to look. Anyway, whatever your vice may be - they have ya covered!

Not only that, I stayed longer than expected, walking up and down their aisles admiring the extensive and diverse collection of adult beverages! It's like a Narnia in there. From the outside, the shop looks very nice with beautiful signage and landscaping, but I wouldn't have guessed what was inside because the building appears small from outside. Looks are deceiving! They have just about any liquor you might desire. They also carry domestic and craft beers, seltzers... pretty much if you can think it, they have it. I spoke with the owner at the counter who was so kind. He gave me his business card and said that if they don't have something I want, they will order it! That's a pretty cool guarantee and you can't beat that kind of service. I ended up getting what I needed for my husband and I grabbed some craft beer for me! If you're getting off the bus I can imagine that this is a convenient stop but not a place I'd frequent for party store pick-ups. Parking in front is convenient and parking in the rear offers entrance through the back of the store. What's the most important thing to find locally when you first move into a new town? That's right:…read morea beer store. This one happens to be very conveniently located, which is nice, because I can't see driving across town to get to this place. The beer prices are not bad, and the liquor selection is not huge but they have pretty much what normal people might want. They do have a lot of half-cases, where they've cut apart a case of beer and taped each side shut to make it into two 12-packs. Is that shady? Yeah, a little. The neighborhood feels a little shady too. I would stop here by myself during the day or with a friend at night, but I wouldn't spend much time lingering around by myself after dark. We've seen quite an interesting cast of characters wander in and out while we were trying to decide which beer to get, and the owner seems to know the regulars. I learned that most regulars at shady liquor stores do not have all their original teeth, and it doesn't seem to bother them at all. It bills itself as a one-stop shopping place, and it certainly does have at least 2 kinds of chips, some gum, no-brand plus-size pantyhose, and several different magazines, some of them with their covers obscured to protect one's dainty sensibilities. Plus if you're hungry and don't mind a little dust, you can pick up some Chef-Boy-Ar-Dee or Rice-A-Roni along with your beverage. Bottom line: I wouldn't go out of my way to shop here, but I wouldn't go out of my way to NOT shop here either. If it's on my way home and I need to restock the beer fridge, I'll probably be spotted in there again.

I recently had a child and had an extremely limited window to find a particular and very special bottle (which was dumped from the barrel on his birthday) to open with him on his 21st. It took a lot of work to track down, but State Fair Supermarket was the only place I could find that actually had this bottle. The only problem was the store is in Michigan and I'm in Georgia. Simon was incredibly helpful and accommodating with my request to hold not just one but five of these bottles (yeah, his store got a lot of this difficult-to-find bottle) while I tracked down a friend of a friend who could go pick them up for me. This is the type of bottle that typically flies off the shelf and the fact that Simon was willing to hold these for me is really pretty amazing. Just check the store's Instagram. They get a great selection of products all the time and actually care about their customers. If I lived in Michigan, this would absolutely be my go-to store, and I'll definitely stop in anytime I find my way up there.
