All of the doctors, techs, staff, and receptionists are phenomenal. I suggest this practice to person I meet who gets a new dog or cat. They all care and are well versed on not only animal wellness but also animal behavior and fear free practices. I like the vets here, we've been going here for about seven years. However, if my dog weren't 16, I'd definitely switch somewhere else. They decided to stop handling prescriptions. So if you have an elderly dog like mine that takes a bunch of pills, it's a nightmare. I use Chewy for pills because it's much, much cheaper than buying from the vet. So I have to ask the vet's office for a paper prescription and send it to Chewy via US mail. The prescriptions seem to only last like three months, and there are five of them. So I'm at the vet's office like every other week for another paper prescription. And since it's an unusual process because every other vet in the world will fax a prescription to Chewy, there are often issues with Chewy (as usual, they are very nice and helpful but still). For instance, I just placed an order for two prescriptions and found one of them was out of refills. Instead of sending the one prescription, for some reason Chewy held both of them while waiting for me to send in the paper prescription. Now I've run out of one of the pills so have to buy that directly from the vet (for a lot more money) and Chewy's telling me I have to cancel the other order and resubmit it, delaying everything even longer. Unless you're confident your dog isn't going to need prescriptions, I'd recommend looking elsewhere for a vet. read more

tl;dr- This place is fabulous, and definitely reasonably priced. =============== I ended up finally going back here a couple of weeks ago with my new dog because I was tired of dealing with the sour receptionist at my former place, plus they really screwed up my last dog's care and their hours had shrunken considerably. What a difference - wow! The receptionists at Point Breeze VC were very pleasant from my first call. They got me scheduled at a reasonable time with Dr. Berger from when I called, then got me in much sooner from the waiting list with Dr. Simard. Just for the record, Dr. Berger is actually Dr. Gerson's daughter and recently fully took over the clinic because Dr. Gerson fully retired. Dr. Simard was absolutely fabulous. First, she introduced herself by her first name, which really impressed me, and was super friendly. I loved the tech, too, whose name I have unfortunately forgotten, but she was Mexican and I speak semi-fluent Spanish, which a visit to Mexico as a child had influenced me to study, so I have a soft spot in my heart for the country and its people. I don't get much chance to use my Spanish in Pittsburgh, so we were both delighted. Her accents might be a little hard for some people to understand, but that in no way affects the quality of her care. Dr. Simard is clearly a native speaker of French, but her English is flawless, with only the slightest trace of an accent. I don't know if any other language is available there or not. Both were incredibly efficient and gentle with Romeo, and treated him like he was their own, giving him treats including Easy Cheese. He had a couple of minor issues which they took great care of. I was delighted, especially because his vet records from his previous owner had said he was afraid of stethoscopes, but he didn't show the slightest concern with either of these ladies, just snuggled up to both. Dr. Simard also treated me like a respected equal in Romeo's care, which of course is important, because that *is* what owners actually are. They showered me with all kinds of information about their services and emergency care, and gave me a new client and patient packet in a very nice reusable bag, including a folder with some helpful flyers - and a chart for tracking my dog's vaccines and care. They have a service for a modest price where you can call *after hours* and speak *with one of their vets* about any concern rather than *have* to go to an emergency clinic only to find out that you could have done the treatment yourself at home. They will, of course, tell you if you really should go to the emergency clinic, but could also save you a lot of money. They also give a substantial discount on flea and tick meds if you buy a 6 month supply. The entire place is spotlessly clean, which of course is critical in a veterinary hospital. They recently completely renovated it during the pandemic, so it's now bright and fresh. They are also up to date with modern technology, including text messaging, which makes the administrative things much easier and more efficient. Some reviews have said they're very expensive, but I was delighted to find it's the complete opposite. I called around for prices for neutering and a simple office visit - and this place was hands down the least expensive, literally *half* of what my former VCA vet now charges, at least for office visits. Their other charges are quite modest as well. Veterinary care *is* expensive these days; that's just how it is *everywhere.* Be aware that they do require up front payment when you schedule your first visit, but of course it's applied to your total bill once your pet is actually seen, and I think will be fully refunded should you cancel within their cancellation timeframe. It's fully wheelchair accessible (I think) except for the restroom. I didn't think to measure the doors. Parking is a real pain if you have a wheelchair van because of how the street itself and the curbs are, but even that is doable. I finally found a space several houses down on Reynolds around the bend towards Fifth Ave. This is obviously not PBVC's fault, just something to be aware of if you use a side-opening wheelchair van. read more

I write this review after being a client there for 5 years. I've had some good and some bad experiences. We wanted to switch offices about 2 years ago but didn't want to go through the hassle of establishing as a new patient elsewhere. But now, we are moving out of state and I'm happy to not have to go back there again. I thought about what exactly made my experiences unpleasant, and I realized it's Jenny in the front office! She is always incredibly rude! Eye rolls, sighs of "ugh", absolutely no respect for any of the customers. I'm sure she may deal with "annoying" clients from time to time, but to treat everyone like we are scum of the earth the moment we walk in is unacceptable. We (as a collective whole) go to the vet for routine visits and we also go on days that are very scary for us and our pets. The receptionists are the first ones to take our calls, to greet us upon entry, and to see us when we leave. If point breeze vet wants to boost their ratings, they should really have a discussion with their office staff on customer service. That can really be a make it or break it for a business. The instance that really drew the line for us happened around April. I had to cancel an appt for my dog one afternoon because my 1 year old son was rushed via ambulance to the hospital over night. So I called as soon as the office opened in the morning, explained what happened: that my son was at children's hospital and we could not make it to our appointment that afternoon. All Jenny said was, "well we require a 24hr notice next time." And she hung up! She actually hung up on me! I, too, wish that I would have had a 24hr notice that my son was going to need a life saving ambulance ride. Thanks. Just completely disrespectful. Very disappointed, and I have been taking my dogs here for decades. I needed to get my 10 week old puppy her shots, and was told that the first appointment was six weeks away. I took it, but asked to be put on the waiting list for cancellations. The office called on a Monday and said they had a cancellation "next Thursday." I assumed that meant the following week (she never gave me a date, just "next Thursday."). When I showed up, it turned out that the person who called meant during the week she called. When I said that my pup needed her vaccinations, the response I got was, "Maybe you can find another vet." This used to be a great veterinary practice, but no more. My dog had four visits here over a two-year span. I was asked what I was feeding my dog Reported it was grain free and never warned. After a couple of months of coughing they ran tests and I was told that likely the grain free food I was feeding my dog caused cardiomyopathy. When I asked why I was not informed of the dangers of grain free food I was told by the owner that it's not their responsibility what I put in my dogs bowl. And that they did their best to warn everyone. They failed to warn me and I was there four times. I do think it's their responsibility to advise me on dangerous dog foods especially if they are asking me at my visits what I am feeding my dog. This was a gross oversight. My dog will likely not live a full life and I was given a bill f over $600 for these tests. read more

I love this clinic, the staff, and the vets. I started using them when I found a starving stray cat nearly 3 years ago and the local shelter was closed. I took her to Pt Breeze because it was so close, and they checked her for a microchip and gave her an initial exam to let me know her condition. When the staff heard I was going to take her home while we searched for an owner, Dr. Gerson came out and gave her all her vaccinations, deworming, and a more thorough assessment. Based on her condition, he didn't think she'd last the week, but asked to see her again to continue trying to help her. Under his care, and with help from specialists at PVSEC, Midna (what we eventually named her) lived a comfortable, safe life with us for 2 years despite having IBD, kidney failure, chronic UTIs and possibly cancer. She was a handful but deserved so much more than life on the street, and Dr. Gerson believed that too. He gave her excellent care despite her rough background and uncertain future. Because of that experience, I recently started rescuing cats and now I bring all my tougher health cases to them! Dr. Finnerty specializes in cats and is so kind and helpful. She recognized a serious heart murmur in a kitten I brought to her that had eye damage and a hernia. She was so compassionate and thorough in explaining all the ways to go about treating this little guy. I am just always so impressed with their level of care. We have had a great experience with both of the vets we have seen here. My wife and I were billed $800 for blood and urine tests of our cats last week. This is an exorbitant amount. Both of us are experiencing financial distress due the economic downturn. My hours have been cut in half, and my wife has lost some benefits for her job. So with this background, I spoke to practice manager Dr. Stephanie Berger yesterday to get our billed reduced significantly. Berger flatly refused. This is a non-starter. I don't see how the clinic can not negotiate with customers during an economy that hasn't been this bad since the great depression. Her decision has forced us to forgo recommended follow up testing of one of our cats. Berger's decision is a singularly callous one. Her inflexibility has probably not just cost her our business but other customers as well. Berger said that the clinic does do pro bono work, however, we weren't eligible for it. How is that so? The clinic's bill is nearly three fourths of my monthly salary. This bill is an onerous one to us. And how can a business that charges so much not be more flexible in offer financial assistance during an economic crisis? Please reflect about our experience before you consider taking your pet to the clinic. read more

I just want to give a huge shout out of THANKS to my veterinarian, Dr. Linda Mathias, and ALL THE ENTIRE STAFF at Point Breeze Vet!!! I have been going to PBV for over 20 years. They are beyond kind and courteous and I have to say the way they have been handling all of this crazy Covid is beyond impressive!!! It's an incredibly stressful situation they are placed in. Yet they have managed this all so seamlessly and will kindness and calm. I will FOREVER be grateful to Dr. Larry Gerson for all of his help and knowledge over the years. I have been a customer for 15 years this used to be a great place. I have called every day for a week. They are too busy to see our dog. The next appointment is April 6. That is over 20 days away. What am I to do? The problem here is they have taken on too many clients. Now simple care for my pet is not available any more. I am leaving and will not be back. Very mixed feelings. We took our Lab/pit mix there last Monday. They gave us same day appointment, thank you. We were offered blood tests and xrays for "about 500 dollars". We could only do the bloodwork and antibiotics and went into sticker shock when told our total was almost 400 dollars, with a phone call about bloodwork to come the next day. Tuesday came. No call and I was getting sick so I grabbed hot shower after dinner...there came the call. There went a message that got me so scared, telling me "we need to talk about her bloodwork and come up with a plan". I called early Wed. morning and was told "she'll call when she gets in", no call back, Thursday morning, we were told she wasnt in Wednesday, that she had a block of appointments and she'd call after that...no call til around 7pm, all the while I'm worrying, crying and googling. The check cleared Thurs. morning and at 7 THURSDAY NIGHT, I'm told I have til Friday before 4:30 to bring her in for another blood test to see if her Lyme disease was new. TIME WAS A FACTOR and that's the notice we got? No follow-up talk about liver cells being bad, her white count being really bad...all the issues going on...She needed help! I called Fri morning to tell them we couldn't get her in, asked for doc to give pain meds for broken tooth or other pain, was told she'd call back...NOTHING. For years we were treated like family, now like second class citizens. It's now Sunday. Chantz won't eat anything and her breathing has gotten labored, seems like shes in pain and she's feverish. We can't afford emergency vets. We will be taking her tomorrow, to a vet that will treat her like a patient, not a paycheck. read more

I've been taking my goldendoodle, Moose, here since he was a pup a little over a year ago. From tummy parasites to ear infections to pink eye--Moose has had many visits to Point Breeze! Pros: All of the staff cares for your pup as if he was their own. All of the vets are very knowledgeable and take the time to explain everything and answer questions. Best of all--they are responsive to emails--they welcome questions and pictures if you're unsure if your pup should be seen or not Cons: PRICEY. This vet is a bit on the pricey side, but I know they do good work, so paying the extra is worth it. Sometimes it is difficult to get appointments Tip: if you need a same day sick appointment make sure to call as soon as they turn their phones on at 8am! read more

Dr. Caroline Simard is wonderful, but she is frequently unavailable to see her patients as it appears she only works part time. If you have a real emergency when she is on one of her lengthy vacations, you will be forced to meet with another doctor. On one such occasion, we did that and it resulted in a permanent change in my pet's overall health. I was forced to locate another vet when I adopted a new kitten. Then I recently accepted a job overseas, and wanted to take my older cat back to their vet just to get the paperwork done, so I didn't have to take him to the new vet and pay for the initial visit. The receptionist informed me that their policy is not to handle ANY paperwork unless submitted through a pet relocation service. When I tried to clarify and ask another question about my doctor simply signing off on a health chart, she spoke over me loudly and repeatedly saying NO. I understand that you may have been burned in the past, but seriously, learn some manners, lady. 1. Not being able to see the doctor that I prefer 2. Absence of said doctor led to a PERMANENT decrease in my pet's well being 3. Policies that engender total lack of cooperation at a stressful time regarding the relocation of my pet. 4. Being treated extremely rudely by reception was the final straw. I mean, she was so inflexible that she raised her voice at the mere request of clarification of their rule. I don't need anyone shouting at me, especially someone that I am paying, at 8:30 am. Thanks, but no thanks. For these reasons, it is just simply not worth the stress, time, or money to return. Other commenters have noted that you do not always have access to the same provider at this clinic and that this inconsistency can lead to problems in care. I have had three annual visits at this clinic, with three different providers. On my first two visits, I had no complaints, and I can understand why the clinic gets generally good reviews. Unfortunately, on the most recent visit with my cat, I ended up with a vet and tech team whose care was beyond upsetting. They were increasingly forceful with my cat, verging on violent, as they tried to restrain her for the examination. (But, there was no need to restrain her because, if they had played with her for a few minutes and pet her, she would have complied with everything, as she always has in the past.) I was taken aback with the brutal treatment, worried it would lead to anxiety with future vet visits. Now, though, I am concerned because my cat has been limping for days since the visit, clearly injured by their treatment. The clinic offered to have me come back in with another provider, but refused to say that they would cover the cost of the office visit. If I have to pay for another office visit to rectify their malpractice, I am going to a clinic that does not have an incentive to be biased in their evaluation. There aren't a ton of vets in Pittsburgh, so this place will keep getting business. (They bank on that.) For your pet's sake, insist on working only with the people you know will treat your fur baby well. And, I hope that others continue to report when they have problems here. Maybe, over time, the clinic will realize that they need to get rid of bad apples. read more

Everyone at Point Breeze Veterinary Clinic was friendly and helpful, and I'm so pleased with our new vet, Dr. Samard! She diagnosed my cat's food allergy with speed and certainty and now we have a gameplan for trying to root out the offending allergen. Two previous vets dropped the ball on this one. Not only did Dr. Samard figure it out easily, she seemed to know just about everything about feline food allergies and deceptive hypoallergenic cat food products. She also gets points for spitting in the face of death by actually reaching inside the mouth of my 17 pound vet-hating pissy calico (who required canvas gloves and to be entirely covered in a thick towel) to manually chip tartar off her daggerteeth. And the whole visit, with rabies vaccines for two cats, was under $150. Hooray! read more

I took my cat here for a preliminary checkup after adopting her from the animal shelter & then again to have her declawed. I was very impressed by the facilities and service. The facilities are spotless & modern, and the vets seem both knowledgeable and willing to spend time with you and your animal. I was particularly impressed when I had my cat declawed. They kept her for several days to monitor my progress & called me each day to update me on her progress. It seems a bit expensive (although I have no other point of comparison) but the service is well worth it. read more

Point Breeze Vet is a great practice with low waiting times, professional staff, and caring vets and techs. My dog loves everyone at the clinic, and they've helped her get over several medical issues with no setbacks at all. The hours are convenient and the two locations make it easy to get an appointment quickly. I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes to be seen when I arrive for an appointment. Most recently, I brought my dog in for a vaccination and when the wait for a room looked to be long, the techs just took her in the back and gave her the shot--done in 30 seconds! That's not to say that convenience is the most important part of a vet clinic. The number of different vets and vet techs at Point Breeze who obviously care about my pet make me feel a lot safer than at East End, where I was previously prescribed an incorrect dosage and nobody noticed or, apparently, cared when I pointed it out. Nobody at PBVC has ever made an error with medications (and believe me, I check now!). In short, I feel safe bringing my dog here, and the ease of appointments is the icing on the cake. read more

The vet met with us for a very short amount of time. She was rushed, seemed distracted, and was abrupt. She very quickly said that it seemed like SCC, or oral cancer, and that there was no cure and the prognosis wasn't good. She left the room seconds after and only came back in to say that they would get blood work and schedule a biopsy. After she said she thought it was SCC, she didn't give us a chance to ask questions or respond. The technician didn't have any demeanor with our cat, nor with us as clients. She seemed tired, and overworked. All in all, this was a negative experience. I recommend that you take your pets to another vet :( read more

The first visit is 78$ not bad. Spent more time with the vet tech, then the actual vet. The vet had little interest in the history of my dog. She was most interested in selling me expensive products. And scheduling further treatments and vaccinations. I was not impressed. Felt scammed into buying treats with a bone supplement 60$. Sorry that is expensive. Dr. Carolyn Simard is amazing. I've being going here for 5+ years now and she has taken care of 2 of my dogs. She truly enjoys animals and is gentle, kind and my dog adores her. When she walks in, the first things she does is get down on the floor to greet your dog and gives a warm hello. She speaks softly and encouragingly while doing an exam or test. She spends the time to answer any questions you have and gives explanation as to why she recommends something. Odie and I adore her. read more

Terrible experience. My dog Coco is old and so am I. Covid 19 has taken its toll on all of us. However, in the interest of kindness, we must work harder to maintain Human decency. 29 April, 2021 was cold and wet. These conditions were tough at best for for everyone involved. But the rudeness we encountered was beyond the pale of the weather conditions. After updating the information necessary for check in, I tried to return the clip board to an employee sitting inside the front door. I first tapped on the door to gain her attention. She was on a cell phone so we imagined that she was speaking with other patients. The storm was raging outside, the hospitality tent was no match for the intense wetness, so I cracked open the door to slide the chart through to the dry interior. That girl was aware that I was at this point cold and wet but instead of helping, she pushed the door closed yelling " NO CLIENTS ALLOWED INSIDE" and hit me in the head with the door. Things only deteriorated from there. Our only bright spot was Dr. Simard. She is a brilliant Vet and has served our animals for years and we trust her. Cannot understand the dichotomy of her relationship with such a poorly run Clinic. I was injured and the Chiropractor did not help my dog after walking around the corner in the cold and wet. read more

Point Breeze Veterinary, Dr. Stephanie Berger in particular, are amazing. Dr. Berger has seen my dog on 3 occasions, all for a persistent infection from her time in rescue before we adopted her. Not only does she treat her patients like they are her own pets, she is very calming and sure to fully explain everything she does and her diagnoses. The clinic overall is clean and nice, and the staff never failed to get me an appointment when I called first thing in the morning after a night up with my dog having breathing problems. The staff always remembered me and my dog when I called or came in, and were always following up with a call afterward to make sure she was still doing well on any medications or after a procedure. As long as I am in the Pittsburgh area I will always come to PVB, I can't recommend them highly enough! read more

I have been going here with three different animals. However, I recently missed an appointment. I called to reschedule and talk to their office manager, Barb. Barb told me that my phone was out of service when they called me the day before my appointment, but it was not because I use my phone for my full time career and I would be fired if my phone was off. I proceeded to tell her my phone number and she said that is the number that was out of service. She then proceeded to tell me that I was not allowed to reschedule since I missed my appointment. I then proceeded to tell her my father died about four months ago who was a long time customer of theirs with our previous dogs. I am so disappointed in how I was treated by their office manager that I was in tears. I have been going to Dr. Gerson with my mom and my animals for my entire life. Some of my childhood memories are in that office with my favorite furry friends. It is unfortunate that they have such a rude office manager. I have NEVER been treated so poorly by a human being in my entire life. From the moment I got on the phone with her, she was nothing but rude and unwilling to help me. Barb, if you are reading this, don't you think I have had enough for one year? You couldn't cut a long time customer a break? My dad will punish you from heaven for how you treated his daughter. Those doctors behind those doors have no idea how rude Barb is to their customers and it is not right because now I look down on a place that once was my animals second home. I hope you replace Barb with a women with a heart. I now have to look for a new office because I am not allowed to go back because I accidentally got an appointment time mixed up. To be fair, this place deserves a 5 star review if it were for their veterinary care alone. They are highly knowledgeable and gave my pet nothing but the best while we were there. They also provide pheromone bandanas for the pets to help ease their anxiety while you wait, which I found extremely helpful. However, I was unable to be a loyal customer to this clinic as they were not loyal to me. It seemed every time I needed an appointment, they were fully booked for the next 2, sometimes 3 weeks. While I understand planning ahead for routine care like vaccines can be planned ahead, if my dog is experiencing an acute problem such as vomiting/diarrhea for a couple of days it's not worth anything if she can't be seen within a day or two. Their earliest appointment on that occasion was 1.5 weeks out. While this was frustrating and I was ready to switch vets, they redeemed themselves and kept me as a customer for a bit longer. I took my dog to the humane society to save some money on her shots and she ended up getting pretty sick. She kept vomiting and was lethargic, didn't want to eat or drink. I called the vet at the first sign of lethargic, loss of eating and drinking. They told me to bring her right in, no appointment necessary. They saw her as soon as we walked in and got us squared away with the proper medications and what to do next time before her shots to prevent her getting so sick again. I do appreciate them for that as they went above and beyond in that situation. The point at which I decided to transfer to another vet is when we adopted a 2nd puppy from St. Louis. We got her from a shelter and she came to us with one leg amputated (fresh incision) and she would cry out in pain any time she was lifted or touched even close to that area, she also had a lot of diarrhea. The shelter we got her from gives a 2 week health guarantee but given the issues we wanted to be seen that week. I called for an appointment and was told the earliest was 2.5 weeks out. I explained the situation regarding her health concerns as well as the fact that we needed her to be seen within 2 weeks and asked if there was anything I could do. The receptionist responded by telling me I might consider having her seen by another vet or the humane society for the first time, & then have her first puppy appointment with them to continue her care from there. I'm sorry but the purpose of having a vet is to have them as their primary doctor for health issues, so it's really a problem if we can't ever get an appointment and it's clear to me they don't want my dogs as their patients if they are suggesting for me to go somewhere else...but anyway I called the Big Easy in Lawrenceville right after I hung up since they couldn't even try to accommodate us, they got me in for a walk in appointment the same day and both of my dogs have been going there ever since. read more

When I noticed our cat had worms (ew) I called up the Point Breeze vet and they took us in the same day, despite the fact that we'd never been there before. The receptionist even explained what prices to expect, which was super helpful. Now our cat is a regular client, much to his chagrin. read more
