A steal of a course, I am doing an East Coast Tour and have played, Greendale in Virginia, Blue Mash in Maryland and Paramus in New Jersey and Pohick was a beauty. It was lush and green and the fairways well kept along with the the rough and second cut. Greens were nice but slow but still managed a 89. If you are spray and pray off the tee, the trees will get you if not the rough. It is fairly long from the blues at 6400 yrds so if you are a short hitter the whites or golds is best. Fees are cheap compared to CA and this course is better than some of the pricier courses in CA. Staff was nice and it is a course I would love to play again for sure. read more

Friendly competent staff. Short difficult course, greens are fast and difficult. If you don't like trees hit em straight every hole, else bring lots of balls. This course could compete with the best if the tee to green distances were lengthened a little more. Shorties can play the blue tees here. I could play this course everyday and not get bored, play fast cause there are some fast players here. read more

Enjoyed a round of 18 at this NOVA park. Nice long fairways and some challenging par 3s. 13th Hole is a bit tricky with blind spots and water. It's a hilly course, so you are beast if you walk it. Greens are in good shape. They have a nice practice range and putting greens. Nice little snack bar and pro shop. Definitely want to play this course again. read more

If you've ever played the now closed Generals Ridge golf course in Manassas you've played Pohick bays course. I recognized at least 12 holes that are nearly identical to the now gone Generals Ridge. Challenging is one word. Completely unforgiving is another I'd use to describe this course. Would I play there again? Not my first or 20th choice that's for sure. The scenery is beautiful. No houses in sight on any hole. Not sure where to aim. We'll that's because the course has so many blind turns and deep valley's. The greens are very challenging to the point of complete guesswork. Off the fairway? Good flipping luck. Your now on a hill of mass proportions. You like neat grass? Should have brought some with you. All joking aside. It's nearly impossible and very expensive to manicure a golf course in the jungle. Best advice. Hit em straight. Or play elsewhere. read more

Pros: Terrific layout, affordable price. Cons: The tee boxes, fairways and greens were not in good shape. Can't blame this year's weather - by DMV standards it hasn't been very hot, very dry, or very wet. Also, slow pace. The ranger needs to be more on task. I consider Pohick Bay my "home" course as its close by, easy to get, and has good rates. In fact, they are one of the few muni courses that always seem to offer really cheap tee times on golfnow.com. And for those that don't know, they have super twilight for only $18 WITH cart 3 hours before sunset on weekdays. This is when I normally play to get my golf fix in without having to pay outrageous prices on the weekends. They upgraded the range with new mats, but the issue I have with them is that there are no holes for rubber tees. So you have to use your own tees when hitting driver, which ends up with you losing a bunch of tees unnecessarily. The range itself slopes downhill, so you end up hitting much further (at least a club length) than you'd expect and actually makes it difficult to gauge your true distances. The range balls unfortunately are the pretty beat up and too few are given per token in my opinion. If the balls were in better shape and more given per token, I'd use the range here much more often. The course itself is a great mix of challenging holes with some really big elevation changes. If you duff a lot of shots though, you're gonna have a bad time as there are woods on basically every hole. Pace of play has usually been pretty good here, but the cheap rates do bring out the beginners. In the end, despite its flaws, I give Pohick Bay 4 stars for being exactly what you'd expect from a well run muni course that tries to always keep itself in good playing condition. read more

Great layout, very challenging, despite the tips only being 6300 yards. My problem is with the crowds and the lack of marshal. There doesnt seem to be a marshal out doing much of anything. This past Saturday, we quit after 5 hours and 15 holes, only to eventually find that two foursomes joined up with each other a couple holes ahead, which was why were being held up. No course, even the most lax private course, would allow an 8-some to play. I may be back, but not on a weekend. read more

The fairways and the rough were poorly maintained with grass clippings covering apx 75% of the course. The marshal was really rude, telling us we were playing too slow and proceeded to wait until we took our shots on a few of the holes. I admit, we could've been playing faster but I didn't like being rushed. I will never return. read more

Very disappointing to take 4:40 to get around today. Not sure where the marshal was, or if he was cognizant, there is nothing more draining than waiting on every shot. 2.5 stars Wish I could agree with Jason K, but way, waaaay too much of the fairway - on many holes - were quite beat up. On the plus side, sand is actually well maintained on this course - a rarity here in DC - or at least the less than $80/round courses that I like to play (guess you get what you pay for sometimes.. Not a fan of the architecture here - it's fun to have changes in elevation and side hill lies - you'll find plenty of them here - problem is, you'll find them even when you hit it in the fairway, even in the middle. On 15, couldn't have hit a better shot - right in the middle of the fairway - ball 1 foot below my feet. You should be rewarded not punished for being in the fairway. Happened on several shots. Also - can golf courses please have something more than hotdog, hamburger or tuna salad? ugh. read more

This is a good course. It's pretty and has some challenging holes. The sand is really well maintained, the greens are pretty nice, the fairway needs some work. The inside staff is nice and beer prices are about what you'd expect ($4.50-ish a beer). As a woman, I definitely felt some disrespect from the outside staff, both the starter at the beginning and the marshall during play. That definitely needs to be addressed. My biggest complaint comes with allowing groups of five to play, and not enforcing any play through considerations. My group of three kept great pace and knocked out the front nine in great time. When we made the turn, we ended up behind a single who was stuck behind the fivesome. We ended up waiting close to 20 minutes to tee off on the 10th hole, and another 10-15minutes on each 11, 12, and 13 before being told we had to leave the course (an hour before sunset) on hole 14. When we asked about the fivesome and if this was common practice, the marshall was pretty rude to me- however, when my dad approached him, was able to have an actual conversation. With a few adjustments, this could be my favorite local course. read more

This is a parkland course with varied elevations. It is short but fun for high and low handicappers. For long drivers, the second hole, par 5 tends to drift left in the woods. It looks wide, but you must keep it straight. Hole number 12 and 13 are challenging. Undulated greens on both make putting a challenge. Good memories with family and friends on this course. If you are walking, it will give you a workout. read more

Good course, interesting collection of golf holes, brain over brawn for sure. From tee to green your playing defense with only a couple of holes that allow for a careless shot. Holes 12, 13 and 14 are wonderful and if you can play them well you will preserve your score. The finishing hole is tricky, the approach is challenging with birdie possible, bogey likely. The conditions are hit or miss, greens were slow and roughed up the last few times I've played there. Not for beginners!!! If you need to tighten up your game this is for you. Pohick was a nice surprise. This is a tree-lined, hilly venture that makes you ponder club selection pretty much on every hole. Kinda reminded me of a target golf course set in the woods. Placement off the tee was key, definitely not a bomb and gauge set-up with a numerous blind tee shots, uphill or downhill approaches. It's a good test of shotmaking. Pace was at exactly 5 hours with a bit of a bottle neck on the back at 13 and 14, water in play...Or you have a guy in calf-length acid-washed jean shorts attempting to play from the tips with a consistent banana pull into the left tree line insisting he's a gamer while looking for his ball. Not a bad muni course, especially for a high handicap (20) player like me. Greens are not too difficult and the fairways aren't really as tight as they could be, and the turf is normally in good shape. If you like a challenge, the furthest tees really make for a long course. For most of the course, you really feel "out in nature", which I like. Excellent course for price, location, and condition. It's in excellent shape for a municipal golf course. For us Arlington folks, it's probably the closest, reasonably-priced golf course that provides a decent challenge. It's a good one to play regularly. It's rather quirky so not recommended for a one-off. But it's fun to get to know. I've played here off and on since I was in college 20 years ago. A few years back, the course conditions improved greatly. They must have got a new greenskeeper around then. It's a good walk too - nice and hilly. Take a cart if you're out of shape. ;0) read more

Thought the course was in great shape for this time of year but the starter is as unprofessional as they get I was on my second shot in the fairway on 18 at 6:05 the sun does not even set this time of year until at least 6:30 I see the starter flying up the fairway in his cart yelling at my to get the cart in because he wanted to get home. I've driven from MD to play this course as much as a dozen times a year over the last 12 years, so I obviously know it well and enjoy it, with the exception of the 13th green, which needs to be blown-up and re-landscaped. When you have a short uphill putt that just misses, and have the ball roll back downhill, go past you and right off the green, it needs to be blown-up, and that can happen anywhere on that green, the slope is from back to front, don't ever be past/above the hole on that green. I quit this course for the rest of the Summer a couple of years ago due to that green. Most recently I played here on Sat. April 27, 2013 with a 12 noon tee-time, but even the first teebox had a 15 minute back-up, and the logjam never cleared-up. I finished the round at 6pm. Others have complained about the price here, but $54.78 (tax included) for 18 holes that included a riding cart on a Saturday at noon (the rates drop $8.50 at noon) on their Summer rates doesn't seem excessive to me. Taking 6 hours to play 18 holes is definitely excessive, and it's enough to make me reconsider driving 25 miles to play here on weekends in the future. They need to bite the bullet and space-out their tee-times to 12 minutes, they currently show 9 minutes on the weekend, but it feels more like 6. read more

A very well kept public course that plays a little short but is still a "Challenge". A few tricky par 3's and a couple of eagle chance par 5's make for a fun outing. I will say that the last time I played on a sunday I teed off at 1:20 and finished the 18th at 6:30 so its not the fastest paced course but it's alright. read more

I used to like this course but the last few times I've played I've had bad experiences. I played late in the season last year and the greens were cut so high it was like putting on shag carpet, this was great for approach shots but it was impossible to gauge speed and break with the flat blade. This year the experience was even worse, when I arrived the starter had given my tee time to another group that had just walked on but told him they were my group, this may have been due to a slight language issue with the starter though, then the starter tells us we weren't going to get all of the 18 holes we paid for because we had to have the carts in by 7:10 even though it doesn't truly get dark until 7:45 at this time of year. The greens were cut much better this year though there are a few greens with very extreme slope to them and with the greens cut so tight and pin placement being so bad it made it impossible to putt. On holes 2 and 12 and 13 specifically the pin placement was at or on the slope which meant puts that stopped just long or just short rolled back down and in some cases off the green. On hole 16 the starter drove by and yelled at us while we were on the green that we needed to head back in, when one of the guys in my group asked if we could just skip to 18 and play it in the starter became belligerent and demanded that we head back in immediately after we were done putting. Needless to say this was not how I would have chosen to end my round. This used to be a much better course, though with the current staff I believe the course has taken a step back. This course can be fun if set up correctly and it is one of the more affordable courses in the area but I honestly don't ever see myself going back. read more
