I wanted to really like this restaurant. Heck, I want to really, really like at least one Asian…read morerestaurant in Vienna. But there are obviously different standards that are adhered to in Austria as regards Chinese food (...and indeed throughout Europe) Xus Cooking is certainly an attractive enough space. Its location in Neubau is off a courtyard of a modern building. The servers were Chinese and friendly. The prices are fairly reasonable. It is a Vegetarian restaurant with a large menu of offerings. The first course I actually enjoyed. They were Peanut and Vegetable Balls. The hot sauce, which appeared homemade and was fairly tasty, greatly enhanced the flavor here. For my main course I ordered their specialty dish called "Eight Treasures." It featured eight different types of tofu with vegetables and was supposed to be spicy according to the menu and also the waitress. It was not spicy at all. In fact in true European-Chinese tradition it had very little seasoning and spiciness but did come awash in a sort of glutinous sauce. Again the hot chili sauce on the table helped a lot. To be honest I didn't hear anyone at the table raving about the food they ordered. However, at the same time we all ate well. If Xus Cooking took more of a risk with flavours I think this could become a very good restaurant. The ingredients used were fresh ... and the concept is a good one when done well. I would for sure go to Xus Cooking again if I'm hanging out with some of my vegetarian friends and family. But next time I will clearly stress that I want my dishes spicy - very spicy!
