Diplomate is a small music store on Beaubien, near the metro. They don't have everything, so I hadn't thought to check them out in my last couple weeks of looking for a certain pedal. But walking by today I stuck my head in and was amply rewarded. Not only did they have it, it was significantly cheaper than anywhere else I've seen it! And even more importantly, the service: respectful, helpful, no music store snark at all. They moved to downtown last summer. Their store is in a nice spot in front of bar Foufounes Électriques on main street ( Sainte-Catherine) and inside they have less space but everything is nicely placed (unlike the old store were everything was place in a spot wherever they can put it. And they have a nice stage were they want to put live artist and it should be really interesting new idea in future. After the owner died (Steve Kirkland RIP), his son want to keep it going. I will see if they can survive in this new era were most peoples buy used in Canada as most new music gear is overprice cause of USA currency over CND dollar. But this is the the ultimate music store in Montreal, the only thing is that they don't do exchange (old guitar for an new one) unlike lots of stores in the province, so maybe it can be a new thing that can make them earn more profits if they change it. When i was younger salesmen were rude, but now they are super friendly ( maybe it's because older peoples have more money than younger ones but i think that they should take care more of their customers. But now they're friendly and competent. This place was the place were any Montreal musicians went to buy gears. Worst Salesman attitude ever!!!! We were at the shop at PIX yesterday to buy the DGX660(*before…read moreentering the shop, based on some researched, our decision was already set on this model). First, the salesman started by saying to us that the above model does not have any stand, we were there telling him, no, based on existing reviews and the product manual it's supposed to be there. In an arrogant manner the salesman dragged the box of the displayed DGX660 in front us, open the box and tell us to see by ourselves. We did it(his job) we dig into the box found the stand!(not surprising at all for us). Another surprise, the only one left was the displayed. we told him this one is an open box/demo. The salesman replied:"it had never left the shop so it is still considered as NEW*", Seriously?! WHAT AN ATTITUDE!!! Conclusion: we went back in the car, ordered everything on Amazon....

The staff I've delt with over the last year do not spek English, at all. I've dealt wit 4 or 5 of them. That's cool though cause they speak music...works. If I need technical info I have to look up online before I come. That's the only inconvenience for me, but relly it's helping me get better at French anyways. As far as negotiating rices, they don't seem like that kind of place, but I'm not the one to be able to judge when I can barely scrape by communicating in French. All in all, a great place.
