The older section of Oakwood cemetery is just as painted by literature and movies - crumbled down gravestones, crawling vines, unnamed dead, multiple generations of families buried together, and wrought iron fencing. Go find the graves of John Henry Faulk, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, and Ima Hogg! I hope I have not disturbed any of the dead during my visits there or my Yelp review. I simply like to stroll through Oakwood and take in the haunted beauty. Just thought I'd share one of my favorite, lesser known spots.

Bio: Susanna Dickinson was the wife of Captain Almaron Dickinson and was the sole adult Anglo survivor that witnessed the massacre at the Battle of the Alamo. On the morning of March 6, 1836, as the troops of General Antonio López de Santa Anna stormed the mission, Captain Dickinson ran to his wife, reported that all was lost, and expressed hope that she could save herself and their child. Although he died at the Alamo, his wife and child Angelina survived. Following the fall of the Alamo, Susanna was escorted from the Alamo mission, interviewed by Santa Anna himself and sent by him with a message to Sam Houston. The reason…read morebeing is due to a TV news story that revealed some recent upgrades to Austin's first black cemetery. There is now a map of the Who's Who black Austinites that are buried here along with descriptive QR codes by their markers. I was impressed by the amount of information these QR codes revealed about each individual. Many of the graves have been repaired and cleaned, but a severe storm in June 2025 hit this property and damaged all of the old growth oak trees on the property. If you're an Austin history buff, especially black history, you should come by to pay your respects and read about those who contributed greatly to their community. I would love to see this QR mapping program at other black cemeteries around Manor, Elgin and Round Rock. Informative photos and videos included.

First time visit to Evergreen Cemetery…read more Travis Audubon and Austin Parks & Recreation scheduled a group event here, birding and exploring one of Austin's historic cemeteries. Established in 1926 as a public cemetery to serve the African American communities of Travis County, this place is also home to mature live oaks, pecans and cedar elms, and is flanked by woodlands that support a nice variety of birds. It's always nice to learn a bit more about the city one lives in, and of the people who helped make Austin what is is today.

It is located at Airport Boulevard and 12th St. Many of the people buried here were born in the 1800s. This site would've been just on the outskirts of Austin back in the day, but of course it is surrounded on all sides by urbanization today. This is a nicely manicured and well cared for graveyard with a couple of port-a-pottys on site. You could easily spend an entire day here reading names. You can find graves that date from the 1800s all the way to the present day including many military service members. There is probably about a mile worth of roadway winding through cemetery. I drove through the entire graveyard but I never found a place where you could find a comprehensive listing of all those interred here. One other thing I was surprised not to find was a Texas historical sign that would've had some good historical information concerning the cemetery. I'm quite certain there are some very influential people from Austin's history buried within the confines. There are some posted scan codes throughout the cemetery that do give some historical insights . This is definitely one of the nicest graveyards within the Austin area. Check out the photos below.

There is a narrow paved road that runs through the cemetery. I was expecting to see a much older graveyard, but the majority of those interred here died within the last 40 years. The oldest grave I could find was from 1932. There are a large number of graves belonging to service members and I noticed many graves did not have a head stone, just the metal plaque from the funeral home. One thing that seemed a little out of place, was the fact that there were no family plots and all the graves are basically scattered about and not arranged in any orderly fashion. There is no Texas historical landmark sign, nor is there a kiosk with the listings of those interred here. The photos below add another dimension to this story.

I stopped by the Texas State Cemetery on a Thursday afternoon in mid May. The weather was just…read morestarting to warm up, but hadn't quite crossed into "Texas hot" yet. Fred greeted me at the gate along with another staff member and immediately made me feel welcome. He asked if I was meeting anyone, looking for someone specific, or if there was anything in particular I wanted to see. What followed was one of the most unexpectedly meaningful experiences I've had in Austin. Calling what Fred did a "tour" honestly feels too shallow. He walked me through the grounds like a historian and storyteller preserving something important. He shared stories about the people buried there, explained the architecture and monuments, and had an unbelievable depth of knowledge about Texas history. But more than that, he knew how to read the moment. He knew when to pause and let you take it all in. He knew when to speak, when to move on, and somehow seemed to anticipate my questions before I even asked them. Fred was not only incredibly knowledgeable, but genuinely funny, engaging, and an amazing ambassador for the cemetery and for Texas history itself. You could tell he truly cared about preserving the stories behind the names. A cemetery may seem like an unusual destination to some people, but I see it as a place of remembrance, sacrifice, service, and history. Visiting here, especially after also seeing the Alamo, helps you understand the absolute, unmistakable pride Texans have in their state. There's just no question about it. One detail I especially appreciated was learning that the visitor center was intentionally designed to resemble the Long Barracks at the Alamo. It was a subtle but powerful connection between two places dedicated to preserving Texas history and identity. If you appreciate history, storytelling, or quiet places that make you reflect a little deeper, this is absolutely worth visiting.

I called around to get some quotes on having a photograph printed on a porcelain memorial piece which is then afixed to the headstone. They were definitely the most reasonably priced, but I was surprised that this service is close to the $300 mark (some places wanted more). Normally it would be a little more because they'll carve out a spot on the headstone and afix it for you, but I just needed to get it to go and take it with me out of state. Just so you know, this service takes about a month to do. There's also one other unique thing you'll find here. In the back of their parking lot are five different food trucks to choose from. They are not very visible from Burnet Road and they do have some outdoor seating as well. Plenty of photos to get you acquainted.

Not only did the family not expect his death in the family but the staff was completely rude. Although our loved one had family in Texas we were unsure whether we were going to bury him there or in California ultimately we decided California which took some time for that decision and King -ears could not wait for an answer. The staff member Brandon Lanes not only was pushy and very aggressive in the decision making but also very rude. He was threatening family members that they would just have the county come pick up the remains and he will be buried in Potters Field and many others unprofessional statements. Whether it was an email or phone calls the staff was completely unprofessional and when dealing with this type of matter you would not expect in regards to this business. Their goal is clear and concise which is to collect payment and money but at the same time the business that they are in you need to show empathy and sympathy to those they serve. I wish that no one has to to go through these times with this business as I would not recommend them. As for the previous reviews that have been left seems to be spot on. This was truly a disappointing experience.
