Just tried calling to book a table for tomorrow (called at 14.15 as website said they close at…read more14.30), phone was answered by a very rude individual who told me they were too busy with lunchtime and to call back later. I asked if they'd be open to answer the phone later and he shouted 'the pub is open all day I'm very busy' and hung up on me! So won't be dining there then. Sorry, but first impressions really matter - if you're too busy to answer the phone (the only way to book) then DON'T or implement a different method of booking tables. Don't recommend it, they were horrible and obviously too busy to be bothered.

The welcome is genuine and they have their feet on the ground. They serve beer made down the road and it's popular with real ale fans. The food is good -basic and inexpensive - Ploughman's and sarnies, for example. Good choice of well made cheeses and pate. I love the double seats in the porch. I have fond memories of taking my father here and sharing a seat here. And it's a lovely place to go for a walk along The Ridgeway before or after. And it's wonderful to see such a beautiful old Berkshire building. Lovely location and a pretty garden. Inside is lovely - nothing added, nothing taken away. This is the real thing. I've been here a few times now. I'd say the chief attraction is the history of the place - finding a pub that is 100 years old is one thing, but 450 years? Wow! A stirring reminder of Abingdon's heritage in fact. The lighting, fire, beams and comfy chairs all makes this a very cosy place to spend an afternoon. The King's Head & Bell seems to be a freehouse, which is refreshing and the beer offerings are always solid, from top local brewers (think Loose Cannon and Hook). The Sunday roast is pretty good too. One hiccup was that it came without some of the vegetables advertised, but when we pointed this out the manager offered us complimentary drinks, a very generous remedy in the circumstances. Service is friendly, professional and quick too. In all, the Kings Head & Bell is a real gem in Abingdon's current pub scene.

I had made only one booking but, in any case, didn't need to know this. We were told that 'the girl' would be with us shortly. Fifteen minutes later my partner had to ask to order drinks and food. In place of red wine, a bottle of white appeared. My vegetarian meal appeared, (we know this because there was a 'V' next to the title on the menu), with hard cheese shavings on top. After the waitress forgot to ask her colleague if the hard cheese was Parmesan, (which is made with rennet from an animal's stomach and therefore NOT vegetarian), she returned with what we assumed was the head waitress - a borderline aggressive woman, who found it hard to believe that eating rennet from an animal's stomach was not part of a vegetarian diet and suggested that we were vegan. After we had politely educated her otherwise, she curtly replied, "I'll check with my chef." And marched off. Shortly she returned to apologise, (the other half star), to inform us that we were correct and that an actually vegetarian plate would appear soon. Which it did. Very quickly actually. Almost as though it was not cooked to order. On leaving, my dining partners bid the head waitress goodnight as we all left, to which she reciprocated. When I said goodnight I received a cold shoulder and stoney silence. We will never return.

It has a good car park, a big garden with tables to eat outside - lovely in the summer - and tables indoors of varying sizes, some near the roaring fire. The food is averagely-priced for pub grub but the quality is well above average. It's a good place to take visiting relatives - particularly from overseas as it's very typically 'English country pub' in appearance. Staff are friendly, and there's never yet been a problem with food, service, or drink, apart from having to queue to order!
