I rarely write reviews, but my experience with Plinton Curry Funeral Home was deeply disappointing and upsetting that I felt compelled to share. I wouldn't recommend this funeral home based on my family's recent experience. It felt more like a business transaction than a place meant to handle a loved one's final arrangements with love. From the start, they were difficult to reach, reluctant to provide a price list, and overall, the process felt more like a money grab than a service rooted in care. Getting a clear, itemized price list. felt like pulling teeth, despite the FTC's Funeral Rule requiring funeral homes to provide it upon request it was a violation of basic transparency and consumer rights. When I questioned the $12,128 cremation quote with a $6,000 discount due to a family connection to my uncle. Every conversation seemed to circle back to cost, not compassion. Ron Curry set up a Zoom meeting with my family that was supposed to start at 4pm, we waited over 2 hours for him to join, and he never did. After reaching out several times we were told that he was with another family and rescheduled for 8pm.Even then he never joined the Zoom but via his cell phone, when asked if he was going to join the ZOOM he replied, "do you need to see me". They have two locations listed but when I requested the Westfield location I was told that location is only to prepare not for reviewing. Mr. Curry condescendingly called me "sweetheart" .....letting me know they are very expensive and cost more than other funeral homes in the Newark area (he did mention names, but I won't) that was completely unprofessional and disrespectful during such a vulnerable time. We were left with unanswered questions and some aspects--like how her body was presented--left us deeply disappointed. After sending several more pictures Ron did do some touch-ups to make my aunt look more like her pictures and we were pleased. Stephanie referred to my loved one as "the remains" before changing it to the body never by name, and never with the respect she deserved. It was upsetting and dehumanizing. The compassion I expected simply wasn't there. My aunt service was scheduled for May 14th, 2025, during the meeting I asked what day she would be cremated and could the family attend....I was informed by Stephanie to attend the cremation would cost $150 per person. I asked what's included with that price because I have attended a few cremation services and NEVER recall paying a fee to attend. Rahim was the only person who showed genuine kindness and professionalism he was the saving grace in an otherwise troubling experience. He went beyond the call of duty by offering to pick up or drop off things to make it easier for the family instead of traveling all the way to the Somerset office. My Aunt's service was May 14,2025 it wasn't until we called to inquired if she had been cremated just so happen, she was cremated on that day. Due to the office only being open from 9am -2pm Monday-Friday and only open on Saturdays if they have a service NOT 24 hours like they advertise I requested; they mail me my aunt's ashes. They used The United States Postal Service Grief is hard enough. Families shouldn't have to feel like they're being taken advantage of in the middle of it. Families deserve better during moments of grief. I sincerely hope this business reflects on how they treat people during such sensitive times. Plinton-Curry Funeral Home provided Stellar service for my Mommy COOL. My initial call to the main telephone number was received by someone who answered with respectful questions about how they could be of service. I told them we were in Florida and wanted to keep my Mommy with me forever. I was informed that it was not possible, but they definitely could bring my Mommy back from Florida without a problem. Low and behold, COOL was back in NJ in no time. Plinton-Curry made contact to a minimum but completed all tasks beyond exceptional: the care of the body, contract for arrangements, programs including an online link on the day of the services, a day before viewing, and Homegoing Service, and calls afterward to check in on our family and to see if we need anything, even way after the bill was satisfied. Saddens me to write this review because I always want to support my people but Plinton Curry dropped the ball big time. They picked up my Dad on a Thursday evening and we were told someone would call the next day But they failed to communicate the next day. After leaving 2.5 days of messages with their Answering Service & NO Communication from an actual Employee I decided to pay the Westfield office a visit. *My family's location request for service. Arrived there & to my surprise the location looked from the outside to be partially unoccupied or under construction (a Construction Permit from 2004 was in the window, 16yrs of unfinished construction). I thought to myself my Dad must not be at this location (2 business locations listed on their website). After ringing/leaning on the bell of this Westfield location for about 15 minutes while someone peeped out the blind at me as if I were a bill collector, finally someone stepped out to assist me. No greeting or name exchange she handed me her phone with the owner on the other end. Unfortunately Ron (owner) had excuses of servicing someone else's family which is why they hadn't returned our call since the retrieval of my Dad that Thursday. Ron arrived shortly after invited me in the funeral home. Immediately noticed a horrible smell, flooding water puddles off in a near by hall/room, and that the location was not in condition to service any family as I had imagined. Sadly the story details go further but I will spare any more details of my disappointing experience. I did have to remove my Dad and use another funeral home for his service. As PlintonCurry SubPar service and facility was not equipped for any decent funeral service. They did charge me $850 for the original removal of my Dad (smh). I will end this review with a word of encouragement to the owner and the any future family that decides to use PlintonCurry services or any service. Griveing Family RedFlag List 1. Office Hours should be listed for their Business(website, physical location etc.) 2. Read Reviews Before selecting a place of business. If possible use recommendations. 3. Never Trust a Fast Talker. Folks that Don't Own Up To Their Mistakes but instead Make Excuses can't be trusted. Especially when You have the Power ($$$) save yourself a headache. 4. See suggestions below and expect this of any funeral home you will use to add closure for your love one. 5. Spare yourself and family any unnecessary head/heartaches and aggrevation. NEVER leave a Family on Hold waiting for an initial call to begin there process for closure. 4. The Experience with a Funeral Home begins with its first encounter so make it a great and consistent one All the way through. The Grieving Family is counting on You to help make the process a smooth experience for closure. 5. Be professional, knowledgeable, have empathy, compassion and honest($). Being in the Funeral business doesn't just require a shiny suit or black dress & gloves. I would NEVER recommend this funeral home. Read the reviews and think carefully before you trust your life bed one to this funeral home. Good luck trying to get the funeral director on the phone. Employees will tell you they will pass your message along but their either don't or the funeral director takes his time responding. They don't keep regular office hours so planning to drop something off or pick anything up, if you ask you will be asked "well when do you want to come by." The business is run very loosely. I posted a review a few days ago and was bullied into taking it down or Mr. Curry. would not complete the service. Well since the funeral services are now complete I'm putting it back up. Again this funeral home was great 3 years ago when they did my dad services. No communication issues and they employee's were empathetic. This funeral home was also referred for my younger sister fathers funeral in early 2018 again due to the professionalism. Due to the professionalism they showed when my brother in law passed away (2019) I referred my sister and while again they were still professional however, after the church service was done and we were leaving to head to the cemetery they had slide the casket down the stairs because the staff didn't bring the proper equipment to put the casket on to roll it out to the hearse. Now let's fast forward to this year. In May my boyfriend at the time mother passed away and once again I referred this funeral home. The service went down hill he wasn't receiving calls back from the staff and it took months for him to get his mother remains. The young lady that called him back stated that she was unable to get back to him because her phone service was disconnected. I placed a call to Mr. Curry who advised he would reach out to him in which he did however it still took the staff weeks to provide answers when he would receive his mom remains. After about a little over 2 months he finally received them. Now I gave the benefit of the doubt due to Covid that may have been the reason for the delay for the remains but not calling back because your phone service was disconnected not acceptable. However, again I referred my friend/sister to use this funeral home to bury her youngest son. I spoke to Mr. Curry and everything was all good of course until right before the funeral. I placed a call to this funeral home to confirm some last minute details (mom was aware and there with me) and I never received a return call. I called again to leave another message and after hours of leaving the message my friend gets a return call (despite me calling and leaving my number) the lady was unable to answer the question and told us to follow up with Mr. Curry. This lady was rude and dismissive and hung up on my friend when she was asking for her name. So of course I reach out Mr. Curry to get his voicemail as usual then I left a message a with the answering service requesting Mr. Curry give me a call in regards to the questions that we still had and to discuss the rudeness of his staff. Well I never got that call back but my friend received the call advising for me to give him a call. Well of course when I called I never received an answer or voicemail so I sent him a text (no reply back of course). So I came here to write my review. Well as quick as I wrote my review who calls back Mr. Curry. Of course he didn't call me but called my friend telling her if I didn't take the review down he would not do the services. How unprofessional is that?? I wrote the review not the deceased mom. How do you call someone that signed the contract and tell them you are not going to do the service unless I take the review down. Now because of the fact that he caused even more stress to the deceased mom I removed the review. Now the day of the funeral despite the fact that the mom paid for 2 funeral cars only one showed up causing the family to be late to the funeral by 35 mins. They are Unprofessional and I will no longer REFER anyone to your business and don't suggest anyone use this business either until they obtain new staff. Mr. Curry I'm sure you're the one that will see this so just know if you wouldn't have performed the service I would have had mom sue for breach of contract and causing more stress to her during this difficult time. Also, please don't advise families that by law you need to speak with them only when you spoke with me throughout the whole process for everyone that I referred to you. FYI, let's not talk about the law because clearly some laws are not FOLLOWED and mom is expecting a refund for the missing funeral car and being late to the funeral and having to minimize the services for the late arrival. May experience with this funeral home was appalling. I was at the church to support the family for 1 hr and 36 minutes before they came with the body. I sat in my car praying for the grieving family as they had to wait for the funeral home to bring the body to the church. i witnessed many people leaving because the body was not there at 9:00am for the wake and people couldn't view the body. What a Tragic!!! People please don't use this funeral home. So disappointing and so TRAGIC that the family had to endure such heartless funeral home. RJL read more

They used to be considered an upscale, high-touch alternative for African-American families seeking dignified arrangements. Now they're just a funeral home unworthy of any more payment or accolades than your average neighborhood funeral home. If your expectations for service are sufficiently low, you'll have no problem. If you're accustomed to overpaying for mediocre service and being summarily ignored as you spend your hard-earned dollars, carry on. Things have clearly gone downhill with this company. I had pre-planned to have my own service with Plinton Curry but have decided not to put my family through the additional pain of having to tolerate poor service for which they would overpay. I recommend you look elsewhere. Pretty much any place else. They had the Black community for awhile but have taken that market for granted. Good riddance. read more

My good friend's sister passed that I have known for 40 years. I could only attend the services by zoom. I called Plinton Curry Funeral Home on Thursday before the Saturday service to get zoom information. The answering service picked and took my information along with the request. When I did not get a call back by Friday I contacted my friend and she was able to forward the zoom link and password. The day of the I attempted to logon and kept getting the wrong password message. I called the funeral home once again at 10:00 AM as the services were set to start and once again had to leave a message with the service and of course I have not received a return call. Really! You only die once and zoom is the only means of family support during this pandemic. Suffice it say, I missed the funeral via zoom as I could not attend in person. I would never recommend this funeral home to anyone. They were so unprofessional. I was recommended to them and during the whole time of dealing with them the two people that recommended them had to keep calling them to get them to do a better job. The girl who came out to my home quit the next day. It was about 6 days to the funeral and I had not gotten a price, had not spoken to anyone, left tons of messages and didn't get a response until about 3/4 days before the funeral. I constantly called the owner Ron who always had an excuse of why things were the way they were. It was a complete mess. They managed to pull off the funeral but the drama even continued after the funeral. The medical examiners office had the funeral home sign for my son belongings and I asked the funeral home about my son's belonging and Ron Curry repeatly told me that they never received any belongings and that they only received the body. When I told him that someone by the name of Eric Curry signed for the property then he said to me "oh we don't keep that stuff we throw that stuff away" as if it was garbage or something. In my opinion Ron Curry says what ever he thinks the family wants to hear. He is like many other buisness owners just trying to get as much as he can. Horrible limo drivers. They were very rude, right in the cemetery, no less. I was pulling out of my parking space (directly after the ceremony at the grave site where they just said to the family that they hoped the family were satisfied with their services). As I was pulling out of my parking space to follow the other cars ahead of me, the limo driver who was behind me aggessively came towards my car and prevented me from fully pulling out of my space. My car was almost all the way out of my space but the limo driver would have rather hit my car rather than be courteous. Then when I get to the facility where the repast was, and as I was approaching the entrance the same limo driver pulls out of the exit in front of me again causing me to stop short as not to get hit again. I would never recommend this funeral home strictly based on the aggressiveness of how the limo drivers drive on the road. read more
