GETS THE JOB DONE
Plaza Extra is the main supermarket on the island and while it isn't much to look at it gets the job done. It has all the products you'll find at supermarkets in the states, although everything will cost 30%+ more. I don't think I've ever paid $7 for a 12-pack of Coke before.
That said, even with the higher prices shopping here is a money saver. Buy a few cases of beer, some steaks to grill, and breakfast items and the savings will add up. Consider that the average breakfast at a restaurant here will cost you $20+ and you'll start to appreciate this place more.
The hard alcohol selection here is actually quite good and the prices are reasonable. Beer selection is ok, and a little pricey. The big miss for me however, was the produce. I was hoping for fresh island fruits and vegetables and what I saw were sad looking onions, bananas imported from Central America, etc.
All in all, it's a good place to stock up on essentials, but if you're looking for better produce and meats, head to Red Hook instead. read more
