I love the history of Arcada Theatre. It opened in 1926 on Labor Day weekend (their 100th birthday…read moreis coming up!). I remember when I was a kid we went on a tour here and the tour guide talked about a few ghost stories and myths about Al Capone using this place as one of his hiding spots. He took us backstage and in the basement. It was one of the most memorable tours I've ever been on, and probably what triggered my love for historical tours. I used to come here as a kid to see movies too. I have a fond memory of seeing the Wizard of Oz here (which I remember being projected onto a screen), and their old concession stand. Back then, Arcada Theatre was pretty simple and they hadn't yet updated it to be what it is today. Seeing the changes done to it have been a little heartbreaking for me, but I do appreciate that the owner has tried his best to turn it into something fun and still on theme with 1920s vibe. Now, there is a huge focus on live shows and entertainment. It feels like over the past 5 years, the live entertainment here has exploded and become so much more popular than it's ever been. The theater now mostly looks like a concert venue with big stage lights, speakers, and screens. There are also multiple different restaurants on site. It's a little disappointing whenever I see slot machines at a business, especially one with so much history, but oh well. I came here recently because I saw on their website they do a Silent Film series every month and I thought it would be fun to see at a theatre that started out showing silent movies! They were playing The Kid starring Charlie Chaplin. Before the movie, I purchased a box of their popcorn for $6. There was a live organ player called The Phantom that played during the entire movie, which I enjoyed. Overall, the experience was good but during the movie, it started buffering for a couple minutes and when it started up again, you could see the bar at the bottom of the screen to press play lol--it definitely took away from the experience.

It was a Tuesday afternoon when we went, so there were no shows going on. We were able to see the performance area, the balcony, and backstage areas. We also got to see the restaurants and bars on the upper levels of the theatre. Around every corner is another historic artifact or interesting thing to see. I can't wait to go back to see a show or eat at one of their restaurants. I highly recommend the Arcada Theatre!

Afterward, you could give more for the actors, so I threw in an extra $20. The theater is a little tucked back from the street. It's small, and you have to go up a flight of stairs to enter the studio. All the people who worked there were nice and helpful. You could buy alcohol at a reasonable price, but I passed, as I didn't want to have to use the restroom in the middle of the performance. I plan on looking up more shows as they come out. I like the small setting and with only 7 actors performing, you could really sense their skills for each story. They also have art you can bid on in the studio, although we didn't place a bid. I'm not an artsy person but I like plays, and the theme was right up my alley. To the actors that performed that night; bravo!!!!

So I called and talked to Beth the owner. She was so personable and positive. Even when I mentioned my son who has Down Syndrome and how he needed structure. She assured me he would do well there and they were completely accepting of any child no matter their differences. This alone made me shout inside. Loved the acceptance and they proved this right! When starting there five years ago -my daughter was a beginner and my son was in hip hop only. They loved it immediately! Teachers so supportive and encouraging. Good structure of classes and as a teacher in a high school I appreciated that. My daughter would come home and brag about Miss Brooke and how she was her favorite teacher- still does. In five years, I have never had to make them go to dance. They tell me when it is time to leave. Now, my daughter is still in classes and also is on the dance team. she has gotten so good- they have scores and has improved so much in three years of team. My son is still in classes for hip hop and loves it. I cannot stress enough the positives that have come out especially since in quarantine but Miss Allix, Miss Janelle, Miss Brooke, Miss Beth, Miss Rachel, Mr. Miguel and Me. Robert- I cannot say enough about the staff. Miss Becky, Miss Taryn, and Miss Kaitlin for also subbing for my kids. using online teaching and keeping them busy as well by still focusing on technique! I could not ask for a better staff. My daughter and my Son absolutely enjoy going there. The shows are wonderful and so well organized. I always help because I enjoy helping Madelyn and helping the studio for all they have done to be this positive force. Doing online classes and having lunch with our kids during this time of quarantine. I can not say enough about this studio. Even the receptionists are so helpful and polite when needing anything. Thank you to everyone that pushes my daughter - and encourages my daughter and son to enjoy, motivate, encourage, and being such a role model to my kids. If you are looking for a studio for your family-THIS IS THE ONE! They even allow you to try a class before enrolling to make sure you like it. Now that is amazing! I feel like part of a family there. It is with great pleasure that I encourage you to try this studio! See below the pictures of how much fun and family this studio makes us feel so welcome! The team does a big sister little sister to support the younger girls and my daughters big sisters have been amazing. This theater group has been the best experience for my daughter. It is very unique to the area for…read moreseveral reasons: 1. It's a no-audition theater. What does that mean? Your child doesn't have to go through the stress of auditioning. The parts are assigned by the director after a couple of practices. Every child is guaranteed a main part for one show. 2. Although the shows run several weeks, each child only has to attend two shows; one for their lead role and one as an ensemble role, as they believe that children should have experience as a supporting role. 3. The practice schedule is extremely flexible. You only have to attend two weekday or one of the weekend rehearsals. If you can't make your assigned time, no problem! You just go to another practice that week that better fits your schedule. 4. NO FUNDRAISING! It drives me nuts when I pay for an activity and then STILL have to raise money for the organization. It's not even that expensive, compared to other activities my daughter has done. 5. They welcome any child to perform, no matter what their disability or experience. I have seen incredible performances from children who wouldn't otherwise have an opportunity to play a lead role. It warms my heart to watch the shows for this reason. 6. The summer camps are so fun and runs the entire week for the entire day. I don't feel like I have to jump through hoops at work to carve out time to play the taxi driver for a camp that only lasts a few hours during the day. I highly recommend signing up for them as soon as registration opens; they book up quickly and rarely do waiting list kids get in. They're very popular. If I could give them more than five stars I would. I tell all of my friends about this theater. The only downside is that's it's in Naperville, which is not convenient. But my daughter happily hops in the car for the commute, as she loves being there.
