I love the healthy toppings offered, the freshness of the bowls, and the customizable options. The only downside is they can take about an hour to get, so we try to order early. I was in the mood for a smoothie and stopped in. I ordered the "Dolce" smoothie which includes banana, peanut butter, chocolate protein and coconut milk. I swapped the coconut milk for almond milk. The wait took a bit longer than expected, which allowed me to take a few photos of the establishment. Once our smoothies came out I was pleasantly surprised that they put caramel on the inside of the cup. The flavor was spot on. Very good smoothie. They have ample seating and cute decor. I recently visited this location and honestly left pretty disappointed. The new management seems completely out of touch with both customers and staff. I overheard multiple employees mentioning that credit card tips are not going to them, which is honestly shocking. Coming from someone who has worked in a business where tips are part of employees' income, that's EXTREMELY unfair. Because of this, it seems like workers are now having to rely on cash tips, which isn't always realistic in today's world where most people pay with cards. It puts both the employees and customers in an awkward position. It's frustrating to support a business knowing that the people actually doing the work aren't being treated fairly. Management should seriously reconsider this policy because it comes across as greedy and inconsiderate. Unfortunately, this experience left a bad impression on me and I won't be returning. I hope this changes especially with the less portions. Employees deserve better. read more

It is street parking only and there is no parking directly in front. Inside of the shoppe was very clean and Casual. You can sit in and relax and eat or take home like we did. Service was very good. We ordered online and everything was ready when we got there. Both of the women working there was polite and greeted me as I walked in. I got the tropical acai bowl which had pineapple, bananas, coconut strips and granola. Everything was fresh and it was just absolutely delicious. Albeit odd, but I got this for breakfast and it worked. My wife got the oatmeal with maple syrup. I didn't want to try it as the clash of flavors between here and mine didn't seem appealing. My son loves açai bowls, so we decided to try this out while we were in the area. He decided to get the electric mermaid, which was actually the pitaya bowl. It had a bunch of fresh fruit on top along with crunchy coconut chips. The pitaya base was cold, creamy and fruity. When I checked online, it says it has banana in the mix But on the board it didn't say that. So I'm curious to know if it has banana, but it didn't taste like it. Went in for the free bowl for vets on Veteran's Day. Chose the dragonfruit pitaya bowl with granola, honey, blueberries and strawberries. They even threw in the drink for free even though we were prepared to pay for it. The pitaya bowl took me back to our trip to Hawaii. The fruit was fresh, granola crunchy, and the honey added the perfect amount of sweetness. The magenta color of the base is incredible and tasted nice. The blue drink was lemony and not too sweet. I get playa bowls at least once every week or so and this location has the process and consistency down perfect. I like to alternate between the Electric mermaid bowl and pura vida bowl and the fruit is always fresh, tastes like they were in season, and is packed to the brim with your toppings. The acai base is also always perfectly whipped up and doesn't taste like it was mass made and frozen way ahead of time like some Playa bowls location. I've always been a fan of açaí bowls in generals, but what I love about playa bowls specifically is the variety available. You can have an açaí base, pitaya base, protein base and more. This feels very unique to this chain itself. The fruits and various other toppings are delicious and help create a flavorful profile for your bowl! I got the Nutaya bowl which is pitaya base, granola, Nutella, blueberries and coconut mixture. I was expecting the Nutella to be a little bit more a drizzle than a whole layer, but not disappointed. Still adds all the fun flavors you could ask for. It's such a refreshing breakfast (or treat depending on when you get one) and feels like you're having sorbet. Highly recommend this spot! Can't wait to try more of the bowl options. Hopefully they start moving out west so it'll be a little easier to accomplish haha. read more

I usually love this location but today they messed up my order. I order a Kale bowl with blueberry, banana and hemp seeds. I also added peanut butter drizzle and almond butter drizzle. I am a Playa Bowl addict and have been a frequent customer for many years now. However, I feel like the quality and service of your products (especially at your Rutherford, NJ location) have been steadily plummeting. Today I paid $32 plus a 20% tip for two acai bowls. That's really EXPENSIVE, but receiving a full bowl that didn't skimp on the topping and left me feeling full seemed worth it. Today our bowls were barely touching the rim of the bowl and the toppings were sparse. I asked for protein to be added to my bowl. It wasn't properly mixed in and I was eating spoonfuls of dry powder. Gross! The fruit on top was not cut up into manageable pieces either. My friend and I were really disappointed. The girls behind the counter were frankly quite rude and they seemed more concerned about getting back to their conversation than making us decent bowls. There really should be an adult there to supervise the quality of your service, especially considering your price point. This has happened to me before at this location, so I haven't been back in six months or so. I really did miss it, so I gave it another go today hoping for an improvement. Sadly, nothing has changed. I will now have to find somewhere else to go for my açai fix. :( read more

UPDATED April 2020: open to the public, you can still order your favorites, it was a perfect quick lunch, girls are so nice and they were wearing their PPE, the place is clean and they put away all seats/tables - which I give them props for that (less things to clean and disintect), they encourage Tap or apple pay as payments for less contact. My go-to's here are the Coco Craze (pineapple substituted with strawberries) and Coco Power bowls, both of which I highly recommend. Always well made with balanced proportions of all ingredients. While I've also tried the acai and pitaya bowls as well, which are also delicious, the coconut base takes the edge for me. As for atmosphere, large location seemingly mostly populated (and staffed) with the younger crowd. The staff has been hit or miss and the timing to wait for my order has been very much dependent on said staff; recently, however, things have been fairly positive. Have not tried the oatmeal or poke bowls, but those are next on my list. read more

I've been to Playa Bowls' location in Pequannock which was awesome. The Rutherford location is closer to home for me so on a crazy hot summer day after some travel for work I came here to grab a late lunch. First, I must say, for how hot it was outside, being in the shop was fantastic. They had the AC kicking. Then add the free wifi and of course an exceptional bowl (I ordered the Nutella; acai with banana, strawberry, and granola with Nutella drizzed on top) made for an overall great experience. What I realized on this visit which I don't think was the case the last time I went, is that they have a "create your own" where you can even do half and half on the base (so you could do half acai, half banana, for example) and then add toppings and such. Since I am a fan of their entire menu, having that as an option will let me try more of what they have. read more
