Sequoia Park Zoo

Sequoia Park Zoo was such a fun zoo to visit!! Read on to hear my thoughts!…read more The zoo: There is a path that leads around the zoo and about 20+ exhibits. My personal favorite was the flamingos because we got to see them up close!! The red panda was also super cute. The sky bridge: There is also a sky bridge at this zoo! It is quite high and the bridges that connect to the platforms were such a fun touch!! You can see some of the animals and the surroundings forests from up there and it was so freaking cool. Since this is California, they did have a lot of cool big trees as well! Parking: I parked on the street for this zoo since it gave me closer access. I believe there may have been a park with an actual parking lot nearby but it was slightly farther from the zoo. Photography policy: They allow and encourage photos to be taken and shared! You just can't sell them or license them without getting permissions and checking with them first. The staff: The employees were super knowledgeable and helpful! There's a couple wandering around the zoo so you can ask them questions about the animals. Final thoughts: This was such an awesome zoo!! It was cute and not too crowded. I loved the variety of exhibits!

There really is not much of a selection of items, you will have to go thru the gift shop to exit the zoo. The zoo is very small, but the center attraction is the Redwood Sky Walk. The center staff was incredibly kind and upbeat - and they kept the premises spotless. There were multiple team members going around sweeping, wiping surfaces, and picking things up. There was even a medical emergency for a guest, which the staff handled with compassion and grace. We recommend getting the reloadable cash/points/tickets cards ‐ which have a loading bonus. I believe it's good for most things there - it worked out great for us for food and the arcade. We took a gander at the theatre, even without seeing the movie, and there's not a bad seat in the house! Reclining leather chairs and trays for your food and snacks - it's a pretty cool upgrade for our little area. The digital simulator batting and sports cages were super cool - and the woman running it was the biggest cheerleader to everyone who came by. Honestly surprised, with having food and drinks, to not see a whole herd of folks competitively practicing their various games. Shout out to Traci and the rest of the team - there were multiple things happening on the Epicenters' side that went awry that night, but they pivoted and kept customers happy and taken care of. We will 100% be back for movies AND the fun center activities.

It was nice that our family from out of town could stay at the Casino across the street to keep everyone close! Definitely recommend for a birthday if you're looking for a kid friendly, easy party.

Very close to the California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport, this Holiday Inn Express &…read moreSuites is located in McKinleyville, just north of Eureka in North Coast California. My wife, her mom, and I spent two nights here as we explored the various parks (national and state) in the area, and found it to be good place to stay. I made the reservation for two nights via Chase Travel, total of $536.06. Holiday Inn is part of the IHG rewards program (which having a CSR credit card will automatically give Platinum Elite status, though it didn't really provide anything additional worth mentioning). One good thing though is that one will earn nights and points through the IHG rewards program, even if booked through an on-line third party travel agency (which usually doesn't happen). Just need to make sure that your rewards number is listed in the reservation (mine wasn't). Another big benefit is that you get a $250 annual credit if using your CSR for a 2+ night stay at an IHG hotel. It has shuttle service to the airport, and we noticed airline employees taking advantage of it. Surface parking is free, with plenty of spots. We noticed a section where rental bikes were available, for those who wanted to ride at the Hammond Costal Trail. Our two queen room was fine, and it was an accessible, meaning the bathroom and front area were very large. It was a shower/tub combo unit and the water pressure was very strong, best we had on the trip. Shampoo and soap were Dove products, which my MiL really liked. Beds were comfortable, the large flat screen TV had a variety of basic cable channels, and a large work desk with a comfortable office chair. A microwave, coffee maker, and small fridge completed the set-up. The room had a modern thermostat, connected to a Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner, which worked well. The hotel does have an indoor pool, guest laundry room, and 24-hour fitness center. The lobby has two Costa Coffee espresso machines, with freshly ground coffee beans. The breakfast/lobby area is decently sized with a nice complementary breakfast in the morning (opens at 6:30), and a section of to-go items for those that want to get an earlier start. Free freshly popped corn was available throughout the day, which my wife took advantage. We were able to take advantage of the full breakfast on the 2nd morning, and I liked the premade Green Chile Egg Chorizo & Cheddar breakfast burritos available. There was no make your own waffle machine; instead, a 'Go Ahead Pan-cake my day' machine that made pretty decent pancakes ("in a minute flat"...l love puns :-).

It's right by the airport, but it was surprisingly peaceful. I went on a quick walk around the area and it was actually really nice. Walking inside, you're immediately welcomed into a very pretty Holiday Inn Express--it's clean, bright, and just feels good to be in. They had free cookies and popcorn, plus a little complimentary coffee and hot chocolate bar, which after a long day of driving was genuinely appreciated. The woman who checked me in was wonderful--super kind, long gray hair, just a really pleasant person. She even gave me a room with a small balcony view, which was such a nice bonus after being on the road all day. The room itself was clean, modern, and I had zero issues with it. They also offer a complimentary breakfast buffet, which matters more than people admit--there are hotels that cost more than this and don't even offer that. Holiday Inn Express isn't luxurious, and that's not an insult. It's not trying to be. It's clean, comfortable, reliable, and consistently better than you expect. You go in with low expectations and leave thinking, okay, I get why people swear by this. For what it is, it really punches above its weight, and I'm genuinely glad we stayed here. Thanks!

Redwood National & State Parks

Beautiful scenery…read more There are so many different areas to go and see. All in different cities. The Redwood National Forest spans over a great distance. I drove from San Francisco. To see everything, I had to stay in a hotel overnight. With the exception of driving through carved out tress, all the sites are free. Driving through trees was $15 at each of the 3 sites I visited. There are several rest stop areas while driving to and from there.

You had me at tallest trees in the world…read more Visiting this park feels like stepping into an ancient, enchanted realm where towering trees hush the wind and misty trails invite quiet awe. It's humbling, cinematic, and deeply restorative. Here's what makes this experience unforgettable: Home to the tallest trees on the planet, some stretching 370 feet and have stood for more than 2,000 years. Walking among them feels surreal, like wandering through a cathedral built by nature. Filtered sunlight, moss-draped trunks, and the scent of damp earth create a sensory-rich almost spiritual atmosphere. Fern Canyon is a must, a lush gorge with 50-foot walls blanketed in prehistoric ferns, famously featured in Jurassic Park. Other trails range from gentle strolls to challenging backcountry hikes, revealing old-growth forests, and coastal bluffs. The park isn't just forests. It embraces the northern California coast, with driftwood-strewn beaches and many areas remain quiet, offering a rare kind of solitude. Fun facts: best time to visit is Summer for best weather and accessibility, and there's no entrance fee. If you're drawn to places that blend grandeur with intimacy this park will linger long after you've left.
