I've done about 4 seasons in the league and it never gets old. Oliver is the ideal mix of organized leader, and fun dad who will buy you beer! Liana is the perfect icebreaker, easily connecting people and always keeping the energy upbeat. Compared to other leagues I've done in the city, this one is easily the best in terms of socializing. I moved to a city where I knew no one, and have made countless friends because of this league. I love that I get to play a different sport every week, so you don't grow bored. You can tell they put a lot of love and hard work into this, and it shows by the regulars that keep coming back year after year. Since moving to the city, I was always envious of the kickball kids who got together, played some ball, then went out to socialize after. I'm very active and considered joining but there was something holding me back - I don't like kickball! Sunday Recess is exactly what my little heart was searching for - 8 weeks of games, 8 weeks of socializing, 8 weeks of fun, and a ton of new friends. Each Sunday is a different sport - Dodgeball, Kickball, Soccer, Ultimate, and Flag Football, to name a few. There are approximately 30 people per team, making it a league of about 400 - that's 400 new people in the city you never knew existed before! If you're athletic (or not), social (or shy), a networker, or just a boozer - this league is good for all. It caters to your skills (or lack thereof), encourages your presence on the flip cup table after every game, and guarantees you two hours of outdoor time every Sunday (beats watching reruns of The Real World on the couch all day). There's mid season parties at local bars, a Scavenger Hunt, and Prom. It's college all over again, except this time around, the drinking is legal. If you take it for what it is - a social league where Division One athletes, class nerds, lawyers, the unemployed, and sorority president's unite - it's in a league of its own. (...and you get to do this for 2 seasons every year - for those not so good at math - that's 16 Sundays out of 52!). This league has literally altered my experience living in San Francisco as I've made some of my best friends in the city from SR. Wow. Where to start? The season is set up in 8 week increments (Fall or Spring) where your team (sign up randomly or create your own) competes against others in sports such as flag football, dodgeball and soccer. It's pretty great in the sense of getting outside the house on a Sunday and enjoying the day while not thinking of what to do with your day while hungover. Word to the wise come in with an open mind and be prepared to socialize with tons of new friends and remember the names that matter. It doesn't hurt having friends prior to playing but I came in knowing literally only one person and now know a few more. Clearly a good way to make new friends. After the games, everyone heads to the sponsor bar for drinks, mingling and of course a game called flip cup. Note playing in a junior kickball league or a few house parties will not prepare you for the level of competitiveness folks endure on the flip cup tables. Fun times. Sunday Recess was organized in early 2010 after a number of people decided to take Sunday fun into their own hands. Operated by the Principal Oliver C. and his Guidance Counselor, Coach and numerous other team captains, Sunday Recess has been making new friends out of strangers and athletes out of all...or some of us. I personally have played for a year and have loved the experiences I've had and my great team: You Look Fat When You Cry...meeting new people has been great, getting out into the different city parks and Ocean Beach for games is fun and the after-games activities can't be beat! The sport changes each Sunday and the games are well organized and reffed for fairness. Athletes of all levels are invited to the field for fun and an hour of play time before heading to a local watering hole for some more friendly competition. Put simply, Sunday Recess has been responsible for about 99% of the fun and friends I've had in my years in SF. I joined about 6 seasons ago when it was still going under a different name. When it re-branded to Sunday Recess, things got real. I took on the task of becoming a captain and recruiting 30+ of the most awesome people I could find to create a fun and well-rounded team. This is definitely a league where anyone who wants to have fun is welcome. That's our team's motto. Whether you're a D-1 athlete or just like to be around fun people you will find a place. I was looking for an intramural sports league for my husband and I to join, and I came across Play Recess on Yelp. And I'm so glad I did! Oliver, the creator of PR was super responsive to my email inquiries before the season started. The league is a little young, but that didn't deter us 30+ year olds from having a great time! It was a social way to exercise that we looked forward to each week. Plus, when else will you have the chance to play kickball, ultimate frisbee, and dodgeball (among other games) with all of the equipment provided and an umpire/referee to keep score and call fouls. The league is competitive but nothing crazy where you'll get shamed if you miss a shot. We had a ton of fun and recommend PR to anyone looking to meet new people and play fun recess games! read more

Ideal for those who are new to SF or looking for some fresh faces to liven up their routine. I also found it to be a great forum through which I could express my fiercely competitive nature. Especially when you're getting up there in age, single, living in the city, everyone's getting married, having kids, and all YOU want to do is enjoy as much youth as you can while it's left. Sunday Recess offers that AND more. No judgement and one hell of a time. Sunday Recess should be renamed to Sunday Drinking. When I volunteered to ref a flag football game, I was highly disappointed when the person managing the games asked me to shave time off of the game clock in order to keep on the games on schedule. It doesn't really make sense to me to pay a league in order to play shorted sports games and then go to a bar to pay for crappy beer. Also, Rossi Field is a pain in the butt to get to. Never again. Sipping on a Mirror Pond Ale as I write this review just seems....appropriate...considering the amount of beer drinking SR generally entails. Also, being asked to check "Good for Kids?" for this review was worth a few laughs. Where to begin? After discovering SR last year and joining to new division, my co-captain and I were able to put together a solid crew of athletes, drinkers, cheerleaders, and hecklers to take on the competition. Couches - if you're reading this - you were great. Oliver does a great job of running things smoothly...seems like all I have to do is bring some juice to share and show up to the field - everything else is taken care of. Couldn't have asked for a better experience/league. Everything was well organized and run seamlessly. Oliver and Lianna are on-top of every detail and super responsive. I organized a team for my office and Oliver took care of all the details - from invoicing, to waivers, to scheduling us at convenient times. We've done other leagues in the city before and this is far and away the best one. You can tell that Oliver takes pride in running this league and knows most folks by first name. He organizes happy hours each week and makes sure that everyone is getting along and making new friends. Whether you are new to the city or consider yourself a local, Sunday Recess is by far the best sports league in the city! I've participated in Kickball SF and WAKA and done several teams through the JCC and the Rec department and none holds a candle to Sunday Recess. I moved to the city 2 years ago only knowing about 5 people. Sunday Recess changed all that. Not only does it foster a fun spirited competitive sports league, it definitely adds a social layer on top. Every game is followed by a rootin tootin flip cup extravaganza that makes a rough Monday worth it every time! Events include Dodge ball Kickball Flag Football Ultimate Frisbee Soccer Bar Games Scavenger Hunt/Bar Crawl Prom Yes, I said Prom! The close of season is always celebrated by a semi formal drunken prom. Overall, I highly recommend Sunday Recess...its expanding fast. Let me count the ways I love thee, Play Recess. Play Recess should be on every SF's Best list because they are literally the best. If you're looking for a way to stay semi-active, make new friends, give yourself a break in the middle of the work week, and have a lot of fun, Recess is the way to go. Whenever I tell people about my IM sports league, they're so intrigued by the fact that we change up the sport every week and even more impressed when they hear that all of the games are inspired by those classics that we played in elementary school. Games each week range from a sloppy mess to highly competitive, brutal matches depending on the team you're matched up with. Recess is fun with friends and even if you're completely new and know no one in the city. Oliver and Carson are stellar organizers and are 80% the reason why I've come back for 3 seasons in a row. I've played in other leagues in the city and none of them were as well-organized and executed as well as Recess. In fact, they were a hot mess when compared to Recess. I'm SO glad I found Recess, they're the adult sports league that I've always dreamed of. SF just wouldn't be the same without them! read more

Sunday Recess is the gem of all gems!!! This is a Sunday sports league where young, fun active city dwellers have the opportunity to get outdoors and have some good, hard core team fun. In addition to the sports that take place there is a great deal of drinking with the post game flip cup tournament that takes place every Sunday evening as well. With over 300 members in the first league, Sunday Recess has upped its numbers and has now added an additional league in the 2011 season. In addition to the great team environment members get every Sunday, there are tons of fundraisers throughout every week that many of the members coordinate. I honestly can not remember the last time Monday hurt so bad. I am honestly thinking I am finally sober now on Tuesday. A buddy of mine got me out of the house and into the city to try to stop me from moping and being all loner status in the burbs. He had said soemthing about being captain of a team and playing kickball so I'm thinking eh why not its sunny. I am so jealous I don't live in the city to do this every sunday. So many nice people, so much fun, and even though I ended up a total hot mess I would sooo do this again. Except maybe a little less jameson. Play Recess is a hidden gem!! My friend played one season and always had the best stories about her Wednesday sport league so I had to try it out. I signed up myself as well as a handful of people from my company and we started our first season in the Mustang division (Sundays). Now we are on our third season and always look forward to our Sunday fundays! Oliver and Carson are the best and super great at keeping the league organized and fun. i cant think of a better way to spend a sunday than bottomless mimosas, sports, and drinking games with a bunch of fun people; sunday recess offers all of this. it is a great way to connect with other young post-college people around the city as well as have fun with your friends while competing in a different sport every week followed by some serious flip cup action. sunday recess was also awesome enough throw a fundraiser for myself and my family for a recent difficult time, and many league members participated; we are extremely grateful. thank you oliver and everyone who participated! i have made a bunch of friends during my time in this league, and the good times continue to roll. get ready to drink, play games, drink more, make new friends, and drink a bit more, followed by a paaaaiiiiinful monday morning; but well worth it! read more

i like doing awesome things with awesome people....sunday recess has awesome all over it. besides it being rained out a few times it was def the best way to spend a sunday afternoon. the games are super fun. i mean who doesnt love outdoor sports? the best part is that you can join by yourself and meet some great friends along the way. you meet people on your team and other teams. after the fun and games at the park you head over to your local bar. the bar we had was abby's tavern. i def recommend taking public transportation because you will be drinking about 3 hours. its best to keep a reuseable water bottle/ flask because the drinking starts the second you hit the field. before i started i didnt know what flip cup is....now im a champ! cant wait till next season for their overtly suggestive team names! read more
