My eighteen-year-old son and I went to Plato's Closet in Barboursville, WV around 8:00 P.M. on Monday evening, September 6, 2021. Not only was the girl who looked at our baskets of items rude and snotty, but her attire also made my teenage son incredibly uncomfortable. She was the blond-haired girl with her hair pulled up wearing athletic shorts and a t-shirt. He noticed her shorts immediately and said something to me about them. Very unprofessional. Looks bad on management. Her shorts were pulled so far up her butt cheeks, we thought we were in the local strip club for a minute. At that point, I was uncomfortable for my son to see her. Then, when we went to her when our buy was complete, she was snotty when she said they passed on EVERYTHING that both my son and I had brought. Everything was freshly laundered and folded in baskets. Everything was free of stains and spots and tears. Gently used. It was surprising she rejected EVERYTHING.
I'm a mom of two teens. The items I had taken were not mine, but my daughter's, so they were the younger styles for younger girls, and my son took current styles that he would wear now. But no. It felt more like a vibe as if this girl in the revealing shorts didn't like us for some reason. It was like she didn't even really look through our baskets. It didn't take her long enough. It was weird. I'll never go back there again. That is the last time anyone in rinky-dink, better-than-everyone-on-planet-earth Barboursville, WV makes anyone in my family feel like we're not good enough. Everything in this store is USED. They put bright overhead lights and fancy displays and clothing racks as the big wigs use and pseudo price tags on stuff to make it seem new and awesome. Then, they pay their uppity, delusional, small-town, Appalachian employees to treat certain customers however they want without taking the customers into actual consideration or their feelings as a customer. FYI: If you want repeat customers, btw, you do NOT want to make them feel like crap before leaving your store. Yeah, there's that. It's a good business practice to make people NOT feel like crap. They won't come back if you do. Take me, for instance. I'm proof.
Hot Take: Some stuff on their racks looked like my grandmother wouldn't even wear it. But okay. If you say so.
She said everything was old and out of style, which wasn't true because it was all popular, current brands. A PINK hoodie, an Aeropostale hoodie, a Nike hoodie, and two Hollister tees. I also had two brand new bottles of Victoria's Secret perfume bought at the Huntington Mall, a $60 bottle of perfume, and a $25 bottle of matching body spray. The first girl who had us fill out the buy form said they did take perfume. Both were new, unused but without a box. But then the rude girl said none of it was buyable. My son also had a basket of popular brands like Adidas, American Eagle, and a pair of $150 Nike shoes that were in excellent condition.
She gave him $4 for a pair of shorts, and that was it for both of our baskets. I'm surprised management at Plato's Closet allows their young female employees to dress in such a fashion that it makes the teen boy patrons uncomfortable. Not only does attention need to be taken toward this girl's rude way of handling the customers, and embarrassing people by sliding their rejected baskets across the floor, drawing attention to the fact our entire buy was rejected. She could've been more discreet and polite instead of causing awkwardness and embarrassment for both me and my son...like we weren't good enough to be in their second-hand store. We will never return to this store for anything. Unpleasant experience. Unpleasant staff. One star is one too many.
And might I add, we took a few minutes to look around the store while the rude, improperly-dressed-for-work girl was checking our baskets -- which literally only took her two minutes because she rejected everything in sixty seconds flat -- only to discover a lot of old and out of style items on their racks, off-brand items we'd never heard of, shoes that looked dirty and stinky, clothes and dresses that had small spots and stains on the front. But our stuff wasn't good enough. As I said, NEVER AGAIN. read more
