The amount of breakage, heat damage, and dryness from my doobie is insane. This was my first time going here, never again.

I was literally the 3rd person in the shop. I arrived by 8 was in the seat by 830. I was supposed to get highlights, a layered cut,deep conditioning, blowout of my roots and pin curls since it's bad weather. By the time she finished my highlights, I opted out to just a doobie and wrap my hair. I understand the service I asked for is time consuming however she was slug slow. 3.5 hours on highlights that aren't the color I asked for nor the depth is crazy Lesson learned. I have been going to this salon for years and it's crazy I cannot give them 4 or more stars. I continue to come because the price is very cheap for a wash and doobie. They have done some renovations through the years so it looks a lot nicer. The bathroom still needs some touch ups though. The women that do your hair primary language is Spanish with barely any English but they try. The girls at the front help with that though. When getting your hair done some of the girls can be very heavy handed and it can hurt. You just have to let them know. Also when they trim they can get too excited and take too much off. You have to be real serious with telling them justa little. Oh and don't go on a Saturday because you will be there for hours. read more

Unfortunately I will be seeking legal counsel against this company and salon for the extreme amount of damage done to my hair. I have naturally curly hair and came in for a wash deep conditioner blow dry and slight trim. My hair is already silky, but now it's burned irreparably. I'm pretty sure this is a combination of heat damage and chemical burn. I have straightened my hair in the past and may have gotten slight damage to the ends of my curl when I wash it...but what they did to my hair is a crime. My hair won't even turn to curl. It's all dead and smells similar to when you get a relaxer so it smells like rotten eggs. I brushed my hair and it's completely straight and I just WASHED IT! This was blatant negligence! You will pay me for damages. Now I have to wear wigs and whatever other style bc I can't even wear my hair curly bc it WONT CURL! read more

If you have natural hair I WOULDNT recommend coming here. On September 16, 2020 I had an appointment at 330pm. I paid for a doobie, full blowout, deep conditioner and a trim. My hair is completely natural. Everything was fine up until the blowout process. No heat protectant was applied. They applied some white product on my dry hair and blow dried my hair. I also asked for pin curl and she did as me what direction I wanted my pin curls. I didn't know the difference so I told her it didn't matter. She pinned them upwards. After leaving my hair smelled burnt. I figured it was because of the blow dryer. My ends also looked as if someone put a lighter to my ends. My pin curls also didn't fall nicely so I ended up wrapping it myself. My trim was also very uneven and choppy. I do not live in jersey any more. I came down there for a trip to AC. I had no service to call and I was also very busy. When I finally had a chance to call on Saturday. I was told that I waited too late. That they couldn't give me a refund and that if I wanted them to fix it, I had to pay. I made it clear that I didn't want them to touch my hair again because clearly you don't know how to properly do natural hair. Not once did she apologize for the damage they did to my hair. I wish I could give this place zero stars. The women were rude and had no sense of customer service. Not only did my stylist leave me in under the dryer for what seemed like forever, when I got up to ask her how much longer, instead of replying me, she looked at her fellow stylist and started speaking to her in Spanish- completely ignored me. Her fellow stylist finally motioned for me to sit down so that she could blow my hair out...wow. The heat of the blow dryer was soo hot I was literally squirming in my chair. Fast forward to 2 weeks later when I washed my hair at home, for the first time, my hair was coming out in chunks. A month later I'm still losing hair and my hair is so uneven. If you are natural I don't recommend this place. I came here to get a blow out for a length check and they friedddddddd my hair. Soon as I went to wash my hair 2 weeks after the blow out, it fell out in chunks. I ended up having to go to a fancy salon in brooklyn and Paying $200 just to get it cut from bra strap length to ear length. Pretty much had to start over because my hair was falling out non stop and the heat damage was so bad most of my hair was permanently straight. It's been about a month since I got it done and will never go to any Dominican salon ever again. This was my 3rd and final time going to any Dominican salon. If you're looking for a place that's local and gets the job done, I'd definitely recommend Platinum Doobie. They only accept walk-ins, but if you come in on an early afternoon during the week there is usually little to no wait. I paid $8 for a doobie, and $5 extra to have the roots blown out after being under the dryer with a roller set.. not bad for the results I got. The only thing I can say is that they tend to leave you under the dryer with super intense heat for way longer than necessary.. this is the only downside. The woman who did my hair listened to my requests and worked fast but I loved the result. My hair feels soft, clean, and she was even able to straighten out some stubborn baby hairs that I can never seem to get right on my own. All in all, this place isn't too bad. They work very fast, sort of like an assembly line.. to get people in/out as quickly as possible. If you're ever feeling lazy on your wash day and have some time to spare, I'd recommend giving this place a try. read more

A close friend told me about this place, and I am overjoyed I allowed them to try their services. The shop is clean, and the atmosphere is friendly. Everyone wears a mask and they spray down the chairs before doing your hair. Stephanie, the Receptionist was lovely, professional, and kind. Lucy, (I hope I'm getting their names correct); gave me a good shampoo/deep conditioning. Then Caddy added sparkle and shine by giving me a Doobie. By the way, this was my first time having one. However, the next time, I will get the loose curls. But it offers something even more appealing. As I sat, waiting to be picked up, I observed my surroundings. They display the most inspiring and encouraging quotes. As a blogger of inspirational reading for the heart, mind, and soul, this stirred my heart. Their price is within my budget, a mere $18.00 for what I had done. WOW! Really Good Doobie spot at a really good price. $8 for Doobie, add $10 for a blow out. My hair started growing and being more manageable when I started going here on a regular basis ( 2X per month). You can bring your own products but their weird shampoo and conditioner is not bad. You can choose a favorite girl, although one of the most popular now has her little attitudes as many who become famous LOL. My favorites just keep leaving and I always have to figure out new ones :-(. Worth the trip into the hood, but be careful with parking..tricky with signs not being posted in good places for no parking days. Busy and thriving , so you have to figure out the best day and time for you as it can be time consuming. Bring your own reading material. I bring my own products because I have very nice cut hair, which I come here to tame and straighten. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE !! I went here because they said they do natural hair and they also had a sale for 8 dollar wash and sets (red flag). When I got there I had to wait 40 minutes before having my hair washed, although I was the first in line to be serviced. When it was finally my turn for my wash the lady consistently kept forcing my head in the sink which was causing me pain so I told her to relax. She rudely told me if she wets me don't complain. So I got up and asked to speak to a manager. THERE WAS NO MANAGER. The lady at the front desk said well you can have a refund, mind you I was right in the middle of a shampoo. She couldn't provide any real conflict resolution and like the washer didn't have good customer service. I finally got my hair washed, rolled, and was under the dryer. When it came time to complete my wash and set, they didn't blow dry it straight they just sent me out with whatever the head dryer did. Having natural hair (and being from NYC and knowing a quality wash and set) this was upsetting for me because I knew that I needed u hair to be blowdried straighter before they wrapped it. I soon realized they was doing this to everyone so my request to blow the ends was ignored. 2 days later my hair looks a mess !!!! These people are pitiful and don't know what the hell they are doing!!! They barely speak English, have no professionalism, and do not know how to run a business. I give them 3 stars because: 1. They close at the worse time at 5:30pm. I go to school and work so there's no way I can be there before 5. I'm always finding another salon in the area. 2. They do NOT care about getting your hair healthy. They don't clean their tools and they use a small toothed comb on wet hair. Basically ripping your hair out. So much heat KILLS your hair. They wipe the product on hair and never rub it in so I always start off with "can you scrub my hair really well?". I will start bringing my own tools and tell them not to blast the heat in the dryer. 3. They are quick to do hair. an hour & 30 mins to 2 hrs. 4. They are very cheap. Once, this customer came in and told the employee her neck hurts and cant bend it back all the way. The employee was making fun of her behind the customer's back. Ok I am an out of towner. Found Platinum Doobie on Yelp. I got to the shop 3 minutes after they opened and I was second in line. They make you pay up front for the services you want as soon as you walk in. I paid for a simple doobie with my roots blown out. It rang up to $13! Where I go in DC it's at least three times that. I waited about 5 minutes to get my hair washed and conditioned. After the wash I walked to the station to get my hair rolled and I noticed 8 more customers had came into the shop by then. I saw in other PD reviews this place gets very busy especially on Fridays and the weekends. So I suggest you come early if you can. The staff is inviting not overly friendly but cordial enough to get the job done efficiently and make you feel comfortable. I was in and out in under an hour and a half. It's like a factory lol it's a rush a woman coming in and they do each head like robots lol wash roll throw you under the dryer on high ass heat to get you out lol wrap it and send you on your way. Just make sure you tell them to blow out your roots because If you don't they won't lol. They are all Dominican so be prepared for loud talking back and fourth with each other . Amazing place if I here every two weeks ask for Anna she will slay your hair!! The prices are more than affordable $8 for a doobie and $30 for a touch up PLUS a deep condition for free and hit oils free Monday-Thursday. The only thing is to watch out for Saturday's and Holidays especially Mother's Day or Valentine's Day because I guarantee you when I say the wait is long it is LONG to the point you will be waiting over and hour at times with a wet towel waiting for rollers. Naturals Beware! The previous reviews by Asia D and Kay J are true. I got a wash and set from this place last week. I am natural (likely 'was natural' now) for 6 years. I forgot my products and used theirs. Huge mistake! Prior to them setting my hair I noticed my curl pattern was loose and dead. Essentially no curl was left. It began breaking throughout the week. I have since washed my hair and working overtime to repair the damage that was done. I believe they put relaxer in their products. They also use an intense amount of heat under the dryers and when blow drying. Not worth the price cut. If you choose to go here I'd suggest bringing your own products and speaking up when it's too hot. I wish I had looked here first. read more

I like the Central Avenue location, they always packed but what do you expect for a $8 doobie. I'm always satisfied when I leave so I like it will definitely go again. I even took my sister who has natural hair and she left very happy. It looked like she just got a perm I was shocked. However the Washington Street location is another story I like the service I just think being that your downtown Newark you may wanna make sure your all your dryers are working and you have enough supplies for the many customers you receive. You get your hair washed then your waiting forever to get it rolled. Then your hair is rolled and there's no dryer for you. Its ridiculous. The staff is great but they need to fix up the shop. I've watched this establishment grow for over a decade. Famous for its $8 Doobie and it doesn't just stop there. Family owned beauty shop and it seems like everyone there is treated like family. Very clean and the workers are friendly. It is walk-in only I believe. If you're just stopping in to have your hair washed, rolled, dried, and wrapped all you pay is $8. However, there are add ons like deep condition ($5) roots blown ($5) full blowout ($10) trim ($5). They offer hot oil treatments, color, relaxers, rinses and much more. I have a daughter who goes weekly just for maintenance and I spend about $18 a week. She just got a beautiful bob, today, and she is very please. I think it looks adorable on her. Saturday's can get extremely busy, so plan accordingly. I trust this place with my daughters hair and my hair. As long as we're living in this area we will continue to come. So worth it. Even better, they work on virgin hair (some other doobie shops don't) and they don't try to sell you something or trick you into thinking you need something just to make an extra buck. read more
