There are tables and chairs inside as well, so you can take refuge from the cold as you have lunch from the takeaway boxes. A large box is about 5 pounds, and a small one is 3. They also have a juice bar with a large variety of organic juices and smoothies, as well as wheatgrass and various other supplements. The takeaway lunch has two sections, one with salads and fruit, and the other with cooked tofu, lentils and vegetables. If none of this whets your appetite, there are a range of ready made sandwiches, yogurts and fruits that you can pick up from the supermarket shelves. A student spending a term studying in London, I hunted around a bit for a suitable organic grocery store, and Planet Organic was the best I encountered. It's a decently sized organics store, with sections of hot & cold food, a food counter, juice bar, produce, dry goods, cosmetics, supplements, etc., etc all the unusual. Unlike some health food stores there's a mixture of products offered and not just medicinal material and ultra-exfoliating shampoos. (Although they have those too). There's a wonderful array of specialty products for those with dietary concerns, plenty of obscure but quality brand names - many local- and quite a few interesting foodstuffs that would be fun to experiment with. If you're looking for a health lunch -hot or otherwise - there's a decent selection of nutritious meals available. The hot lunches are served in biodegradable containers that are priced by the size, not the weight, which is a rare thing. And yes, they fill them to the brim. Expect servings of wonderfully prepared things like brown rice, tofu, quinoa, lentils, and other members of the health-conscious food families along salads and side-dishes. There's plenty of seating area both inside and outside, but beware of the London lunchtime stampede at the usual hours. I'm willing to spend money on organic, local, healthy food, so the prices aren't objectionable too me especially since I mostly buy ingredients, not snacks. In general organic food costs more, and Whole Foods has similar if not identical pricing so I wouldn't fuss. On the up side, there are discounts and meal deals if you hunt for them, and students get 10% off - but you have to ask. The downside would be the often unfriendly staff which is a bit of a puzzler to me as the healthy, earthy vibe of the place makes me happy as soon as I walk in. Also, the produce section is limited compared to other supermarkets, and sometimes the vegetables aren't in peak condition. And if you're look for non-specialty food, well, sometimes that can be tricky. In other words, you can find every kind of bread except whole wheat flour on a bad day. But still, thumbs up. read more

Planet Organic is a health and organic food store curiously located in the student heart of Bloomsbury. It is a good sized store that includes a café-juice bar. There are coolers on the left that have food and drinks to take away. There is a large range of food (such that if you were so inclined you could do all your shopping here) and a health and beauty section here. The takeaway food I have tried has been good and wholesome. The main negative point about the place is that the service is frequently quite bad, which is fairly typical in these kinds of shops. It's odd, or perhaps not, people that look very healthy but miserable at the same time. read more

Insanely overpriced I would say! Organic ok but £4 for 125 g of raspberrys? Wow! Where is the local stuff I also wonder is there nothing around here that does not have to be transported? They have free water in plastic( biodegradable) cups for customers that eat there wouldn't it be good just to have cups you can wash , biodegradable cups have normally be burned at really hot temperatures that could be easily avoided . Also the refill of water bottles costs money I think that's sad a store like this should encourage the carrying of water bottles you can reuse! When I was visiting there was one person at the registers, actually running two of them , because it was so busy at lunchtime!! Everyone is friendly and it has a great vibe. I highly recommend this place and regret not trying the food or coffee. Love the healthy air about it. I love selection of affordable 'free-from' cosmetics and toiletries. The hot food counter is hard to compete with if you are a health-conscious person. They fill up a small takeaway box to the brim which keeps me satisfied. Coconut dream smoothie is just so simple and great that despite the price I treat myself with it whenever I feel like it. I bloody love this place. I think it's because I have never lived or worked near a big snazzy healthfood store before, and this is now a 5 minute walk from my office. I feel like I want to not like it, because it is a big, brash, expensive chain, but at the moment I'm bowled over. I'm just so happy to live in a place that has this kind of store. Hooray for London and hooray for people who love food, and think it's worth thinking about. I have never found it so easy to find veggie lunchtime foods. I am obsessively keen on a £3 pot of vegan chickpea salad from the refrigerator cabinet, which I have had three times so far, and it was with utter glee that I queued up to get my £3.99 box (looks small but is surprisingly deep) filled with a selection of different hot foods, salads and side dishes. I demolished it with equal glee, and vowed to copy the simple but scrummy cheese crouton salad at home. Delicious collection of organic eat in and take away foods. I tried the raw pumpkin pie and it was super delicious. There are so many raw food desserts to choose from. They cater for all diet types from vegan to ceoliac. The supermarket section has a wide range of products ranging from organic flours, to different types of organic nut butters. Fresh and ethical, Planet Organic is famous for the health focused ranged of food products. Very carefully planned this store is quiet the place for the conscious worried soul. The fresh vegetables some of which you can't find in any of the food retail chains are a definite grab for your platter. The meat and poultry section not overstacked and consciously packed is surely pricey but good quality. Cheese is close to what you find in the retails but nevertheless organic. They even have a beauty product range from hair care to skin care. There is a slightly Nordic origin and Indian influence to the products and their value. But thats because both countries are conscious trend setters to the aims and benefits of such a lifestyle. Something for us to adapt as a lifestyle. But there is a controversial element of 'expense' which is another debate altogether. If your pocket can afford it occassionally I recomend a good shopping spree for your home. read more

Dreading another tin of soup and bread for lunch today, I tagged along with my co-workers to Planet Organic. I heard only good things from Molly K before about it, so I was excited! The place was bustling (as places usually tend to be round lunchtime) so I got a little flustered and overwhelmed, especially when my eyes feasted upon the lunch bar. So many options! I admitted I was a newbie to the man helping me, and he was very kind. Luckily my coworker in front of me recommended the Lasagne, and the worker suggested the greek salad. I also chose the broccoli. It was kind've a random mix, yes. But can I just say it all tasted so good?! Okay, the broccoli was .. broccoli. But I really really really enjoyed the lasagne!! I usually don't like lasagne because of Ricotta cheese, but I'm not sure if it had any. The lunch bar option is not ideal for people who have strict food rules (like I usually do). I usually like all my food separated, or at least in 'combos', like curry and rice - things that are meant to be. So it was kind've hard having my greek salad on top of my lasagne. But that's just me, and I'm weird! It's a good price, maybe a tad on the pricier side. But it's a good option if you really want to sample a wide variety of things! For all the complaints about prices- go and get the buffet take out. The lunch time servers here are most generous when it comes to portion size. You will leave with a small (bio-degradable) container stuffed to the brim, overflowing in fact, with baked quinoa, lentil mash, veg-lasagne, brown rice, stirfry tofu and brocoli salad. They will keep packing until you have a bit of everything you want. So take away for eat outside, at the coffee bar out back next to the green grocer, or up front for Torrington street watching. my new go-to for lunch/breakfast! Planet Organic is an absolute must if you are celiac/coeliac or have other food issues or are vegetarian or just enjoy lighter, healthier fare. it's not cheap, but if you have a student ID there's a 10% discount which puts a slight dent in the bill (thank you, fellow yelpers, for that tip!). I love the huge selection of ready-made cold or hot dishes. most of the soups (the carrot-coriander is particularly delish), if not all, are GF. the falafel box was very dry and sawdusty, but other than that, I've liked or loved everything. oh, and they have incredible gluten-free cake and mindblowing GF muffins in the coffee area - check that out, especially the banana-pecan muffins. it's great too that you pay by the takeaway box size, not by weight, and the servers jam in as much as they can. not bad. :) also a vast array of groceries, beauty products, the whole nine yards. great for takeaway or to dine at the cafe benches or at a table outside. my only gripe - the wooden utensils, while I appreciate the recycley intention, are awful - like licking a tongue depressor. it sends chills down my spine to even contemplate it. also, fyi, you will be charged 10p for a plastic bag if you need one. read more

Well stocked, fantastic and popular health food shop. Excellent deli and cakes. Planet Organic kept me alive while I was at UCL. The lunch is delicious, healthy and affordable. Hence the long lines! As I recall they fill up once and run out early, so get there on time. I love the not-so-affordable vegan cakes, the glass bottle soy yogurts, and the herb tofu. Best place in the Bloomsbury area for all things vegan, at reasonable prices, with a great selection of vegetables, fruits, boxed food, and so on. An excellent respite from the bustle of the city, Planet Organic feels peaceful and homey, with plenty of nourishing food. read more

I love the selection of product in here, I love the canteen type food, but I can't, for the life of me, forgive their atrocious prices. Five stars if I was the kind of person who had all the money in the world to spend on trendy health groceries. Oh, and I could afford to live nearby and actually frequent this shop as need to supply my addiction to coconut milk yoghurt and chia seed pudding. I am neither of those things. I am a simple, Croydon-dwelling, 90% gluten-free and dairy-free eating, occasional vegan, Meat-Free Monday celebrating, very experimental cook. So as a nice treat I really liked Planet Organic. I could never afford to shop there frequently. I mean - finally! Large pots of coconut milk yoghurt (not even Waitrose carries this reliably). And oh.. that's where I can get bee pollen. And man, I totally want some matcha green tea to sprinkle over my homemade Nice Cream. And yep - there's the buckwheat flour for when I want to make gluten free, savoury crepes. I was like a kid in a candy store. Except instead of candy it was extra large bags of flaxseed and Amy' Organic microwave burritos. I mean, they have a *water bar*. As in, a place to get still or sparkling, triple amazing filtered, low carbon footprint delicious tasting water out of a cool looking draught tap. This is amazing to me. As someone who grew up in Arizona, where water out of the tap tastes like you took the water out of your dog's bowl and then microwaved it, this was my favorite part. OK, now the rest. It's expensive. Don't come here to get stuff you can get at Sainsbury's (i.e., almond milk and flaxseed). They also only carried the nice granola bars in singles, where as bigger grocers do carry them and you can buy the box to save overall. I found their labelling (especially in the seeds section) to be in total disarray. That's how I ended up doing that embarrassing thing at the register ("That was how much?! No, I don't want it...). Did I mention they have a deli and coffee counter? And fresh baked treats (nearly half of them wheat or gluten free!) to grab and go. The take aways were awesome! (Raw pad thai!) For someone who has (by choice or not) special food needs, quick food is just not possible. To be able to waltz in and grab a lunch to go feels ... revolutionary. So yeah. If I was rich and lived in Central London proper, I'd be in Planet Organic every morning, grabbing my Bulletproof Coffee and my Nakd bars before heading off to my bikram yoga class. Having said that, this is a great place for people with alternative diets to fill up on supplies: they have some gluten-free stuff, raw food, a variety of meat substitutes, vegan cheese, and seitan (!). Offer prices are halfway decent and there is an amazing selection of grains, nut butters, teas, and coffees (and coffee alternatives). It may be the fact that Planet Organic was an oasis for me when I first arrived in London, the first sighting of kombucha and flaxseeds in a grocery landscape seemingly full of heat-and-eat curries, prawn-mayo sandwiches -- actually make that anything-mayo sandwiches -- and pasta salads, but I felt like I had discovered something rare and amazing and continue to see the place in the glow of that halo. Nevermind the fact that there are plenty of other healthy and delicious lunch spots to discover near UCL, the hot buffet here is still my go to. Vegetarian but hearty, well-seasoned, and a pretty good price (£4ish for a small box, like a modest sized lunch, and just under £6 for a medium size box which is like a lunch feast). Remember to tell the cashier if you're a student... 10% off everything including any of the groceries you buy. Fantastic real food and natural product store that does a really good job of stocking a bit of everything. I'm here today though for 1. a new lipstick and 2. some lunch. Cosmetic wise they only stock Dr Haushka, Lavera and Elysambre which was ok but I had remembered there previously being more choice. Also it's a bit dim out at the back of the shop, so I'm hoping that a made a good Colour choice in the dark. Lunch wise there was very little choice at 11.30 on this fine Saturday so I opted for preprepared out if the fridge, which I always find disappointing, and today was no exception. Here's Planet Organic's claim to fame for me: it was the first place I had a green smoothie, over 10 years ago. So, y'know, BIG DEAL. Despite that, I haven't been back recently. Why? Well, I'm not schoolin' around there anymore, so it's not as regularly in my flight path. Also, the organic / "specialty grocer" scene has improved significantly in London since 2002 so Planet Organic is less of a required "destination shop" than before. That said - blame nostalgia - I still like sticking my head in here ever so often. They have a lot of quick-grab lunch options including a line of totally raw sandwiches. I'm also a big fan of their range of kombucha (from France, I think?); kombucha doesn't seem to have the fans here that it does on the other side of the Atlantic, so I find it not only hard to track down, but even harder to find several brands. FYI: I like pomegranate best. It's a GONG SHOW here at lunch on a weekday; there's a hot "cafeteria-style" line, and I basically shuffle my feet around the shop torn between launching head-first into a kale stir fry and leaving immediately with my hummus and Bounce bar. It's just a little hectic. I usually bypass the hot line and instead get my "something warm" in the form of soup (other wall of the store and much less DEATH MATCH-feeling to just get something and go). I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with this place: the love comes from all the healthsome and downright delicious food on offer (along with the occasional dubious-looking superfood claim) and the hate is naturally cost-related. Cheap it ain't, but you can eat well here without spending a fortune if you reign yourself in a little and just get your lunch, avoiding all the exciting organic deserts and biscuits. Planet Organic is one of the best organic shops I have been to, with a good selection almost anything you would get from a any regular shop -except that everything here is organic. What is super special is the selection with wines! Again, all organic. I also love to have lunch as take a ways and then enjoy it in the parks near by, as I think the cafe side is not that charming. It is actually the only down side of this place, with just few adjustments they could make it much more nicer and it could easily become my new living room. read more

I regularly stopped here for dinner from the ready-made food bar on my way home from work - my walk from the tube station took me past it and, most days, I couldn't resist going in. The store doubles as a grocery store and casual eatery and is always bustling with students and faculty from UCL, Birkbeck and RADA. There are a dozen or so seats at the window for those who deign to break bread with strangers, but, really, sitting at one of the big, communal tables is part of the experience. You really can't go wrong with anything from their hot food bar, or any of their homemade soups, but I would go as far to say that their chicken pumpkin soup is not to be missed.
