Ok, let's say you are on the autostrada from Venice to Austria or vice versa. You are sick of…read moreeating at the petrol stops (though, admittedly, the sandwiches are not bad). You want a meal. You want pasta or pizza or both. Pull off in Pontebba, near the Austrian border. It's a little town, and Caffe Vecchio is on one of 2 or 3 principal streets, a few steps from the main plaza with the bars where all the bikers and cyclists stop for a bit. The restaurant is in the back with a large bar area in front, but you can eat in either space. They have maybe 30 pizzas on the menu, with about any combo of ingredients you might want, but if you don't see what you'd like, customize it. I had the sausage and morels a coupe of times. Delicious thin crust from the wood burning oven. Perfect. The pastas are excellent, too. I enjoyed the spaghetti with meat sauce more than once, and my wife had the arrabiatta sauce with spaghetti, with penne, and on its own with bread. She loved it. Nice and spicy. The lasagne is tasty, too. Some days we ate here twice. And they have coffee in the morning. One drawback. On evenings that they have no hotel guests (there is a small hotel above), they often don't have pasta at dinner. There is always lasagne, though. All menu items are available at lunch. Nice folks, with good house wines, too.

Was in town for one night on a bicycle trip through Italy. Pretty good place to have a quick meal…read more Menu is quite comprehensive, especially the pizza. Interior not very cozy or romantic but friendly personnel and good value. I had the lasagna, good taste and not too salty. Portion was small though, too small for main course. We had a side dish, which I would advise. Or just order two portions from the start. My girlfriend had pizza, which was better sized. She couldnt finish it and they offered a takeaway box. Interior looked kind of like a cafetaria, so I wouldnt recommend if you're looking for something romantic. Prices were very acceptable, good value for money.

Popped into town after a day of hiking nearby and were looking for something simple for lunch…read more There's a strip of restaurants near the parking lot and we ultimately chose this one as it seemed busy with a large menu. We grabbed the soup of the day-orzo-which needed much much more seasoning. Grabbed one of their pastas, which was fine (better than the orzo), as well as a pizza that was probably the best part of the meal. It's unclear to me who gets baskets of bread as it seemed very random. The seating system is a mess. You get a number and they call out numbers randomly if you're waiting outside. Our number was certainly skipped but when I asked why I was told it had been announced a bunch (which I have a tough time believing since we heard all of the other numbers and were sitting immediately outside...). Once seated, the service itself leaves a fair amount to be desired as it seems like they're too busy for their own good. The bathrooms were nice, which was convenient. And there was free Wifi, which made the 15-20 minute wait not terrible. There aren't so many options in the immediate vicinity so I'm not sure how the others compare. Ultimately, it was a fine choice.

The vibe is eccentric, off season Christmas lights and sort of silly decorations, but everything we got was excellent. Its more comfort food style, and we ordered more than we could eat because we wanted to try too many things. No disappointments. Also, they had a fun list of beers from a nearby brewery that I really liked. If you're in the area this is a great choice.
