Located in High Street Kings Heath. I was a fan when It first opened years ago. Used to be busy all…read morethe time evenings on my way home. Not so much anymore. They have variety of food they do. Most people go for the £1.99 snack box offers. Nuggets + chips, pizza slice + chips, fish + chips and others can't remember. My favourite is pizza slice + chips. Not a big fan of their fish, batter is bland and sometimes too oily. They also do good donner meat burger. The place is clean and specious. Plenty of seats and looks modern. They have other Big Johns obviously around City. I mostly go for food that I know is made freshly and frequently in every chippy, instead of the ones that been on display for hours and just warm up when you order. Pizzas are made throughout the day and chips ofcourse. So that's my choice, fresh always. Also the pizza slice is always warm, soft and tasty. I've tried their cheese burger and wasn't very good. I prefer gourmet burgers to these fast food frozen patties.

Big John's arrived one day in the shop on the High Street where the big burger chain used to stand…read more I made a pact with myself not to go there-There are plenty other places to get chips and fried food nearby. I was also put off my the fact that Big John's is a chain***-I'd seen one in nearby Highgate, and I prefer to support the staunch independence of other 'fryers', shall we call them, in the area... One day, I was returning on the bus from town and it had decided to thunder on the way. I was famished too. Getting off at my usual bus stop I noticed that I'd be able to get a meal at Big John's without getting wet as the bus stop is right outside. I was greeted by the sight of workers behind the counter smiling, sharing a joke and even dancing a bit to Debaser by 'The Pixies'. That's quite a welcome! The range at Big John's is huge: Fish and chips, kebabs, pizza, you name it they have it. There is also a Famous Five (now six) menu where you can pick up a stop gap snack for £1.99. I had fish and chips which at £2.99 for a big portion was good value for money, with a decent size of chunky, flaky cod. There is an emphasis of family eating here, and with friendly staff and a clean, large dining area, I'd recommend it as a great place to take yours. ***I was wrong about Big John's being a chain, which is why I'm reviewing them here-Although there are a few Big John's in Birmingham, they are owned by local businessmen who have become successful through good old-fashioned values of putting the customer first. This is reflected in their chosen title of 'Neighbourhood Eateries'.

I was pleased to see it had re opened, albeit under new management, the management being Bob. We noticed that Bob had many offers on display, he had deals on kebabs, burgers and fried chicken. We only wanted chips and ordered a bag for 90p. After waiting 10 minutes we heard shouting in an undecipherable language. Bob then kindly explained that his colleague had put the chips into cold fat and we would have to wait a further 10 minutes for our chips. I asked for my 90p back and we have never been back to Bob's since. I have heard good reports about Bob's. This was an isolated incident that happened when they had first opened. The stress of opening a new business can do crazy things to the mind. Perhaps this is the reasoning behind this fatal error.

Bob's now stands in the place where Oceana once stood. Oceana was Kings Heath's family chip-shop…read more They offered kid's meal boxes, and they would shut before the pubs closed to avoid the chav-alanch mayhem that often ensues in a take-away at chucking out time. On Sundays they would do special battered chips. These nice touches meant that Oceana had a place in some people's hearts. Bob's has opened in its place with nothing so special or enticing on offer. Their sign shouts the standard fayre of fish & chips, pizza, kebabs, burgers, fried chicken. Having said that it's a convenient place to get some food down you if you've been captivated by the delights of The Hare & Hounds on a weekend afternoon, (eating is not cheating), and you want to stay out for more alcohol-related japery.
