The ONLY reason this place even deserves one star is because of the instructors, who honestly do the best they can with the little support and resources they're given. The students and instructors are carrying this school on their backs while administration sits around doing absolutely nothing to improve the environment. The campus director is on the biggest ego and power trip I have ever seen. She talks to students and staff however she wants, with zero professionalism or respect, and acts like she's untouchable. Instead of helping students succeed or even attempting to make the school run smoothly, she makes the environment stressful, uncomfortable, and completely toxic. There's no leadership, no accountability, and no actual support for the people paying thousands of dollars to be there. The condition of the school itself is honestly embarrassing. It is CONSTANTLY dirty, disorganized, and chaotic. I'm genuinely shocked state board hasn't walked in and shut the place down. Students are given cleaning tasks throughout the month. However half of the time the student in charge of cleaning either doesn't show up to school, and nobody is asked to fill in their job until the sink is overflowing with bowls of bleach, color, brushes, gel, etc. Or the student is given a client to work on instead, and can't get their job done before it's a complete mess. Just know you cannot expect to get any help from the campus director in situations like that, because she would rather give you dirty looks while she sits behind her computer playing games on her phone! students are genuinely expected to learn in an environment that feels neglected and poorly managed every single day. And don't even get me started on the receptionist who answers phones, schedules appointments, and checks clients in. She is consistently rude and nasty to clients for absolutely no reason. If someone doesn't know the exact "salon terminology" for what they want done, she makes them feel stupid instead of helping them. She also constantly turns away clients or refuses appointments because she assumes students "won't have enough time" to complete services, which literally takes opportunities and learning experiences away from students who NEED those clients to succeed. It's frustrating to watch. Again, the ONLY positive thing about this school is the instructors. They genuinely care and try their hardest, which makes me feel bad even writing this because they deserve so much better than the environment they're working in. I wish I could recommend this school because of them alone, but I can't in good conscience tell anyone to spend their money here. Unless you want to spend the next year in a constant manic episode dealing with stress, chaos, disorganization, and toxic leadership, do yourself a favor and go somewhere else instead.

If you attend a community event, be sure to also check out the exhibits or follow The Lux online--they feature some truly powerful artwork that's absolutely worth seeing. I also love learning about their artists-in-residence and really appreciate their commitment to diversity and inclusion. A friend gifted my young son a pottery class, and he absolutely loved it. I'd love to attend more classes or the day camps, but they are a bit pricier than other options, so we haven't yet. The Lux truly has a heart for engaging children in the arts. The school is in disarray due primarily to a complete lack of leadership at multiple levels to…read moreinclude the principal, CVA School Board Chair, and Superintendent. I have viewed actions and inactions of key leaders the last 5 years which clearly put the children attending CVA in great spiritual, physical, and emotional danger. 30 students were pulled from the school prior to the start of this school year due to significant issue. The same issues being addressed by parents across the nation with "out of touch" school boards and school leadership are prevalent at CVA. -An elementary student confronted another student and threatened to kill him. The parents said CVA leadership did nothing about the situation and they pulled both of their students from CVA. -Eight minority students were victims of bullying and racism by what parents said were "white donor family students" and parents said leadership at all levels did nothing. This included making comments like "Go back to where you came from," "You don't belong here," and "lynching" directed at the African American student. -Students/parents state Critical Race Theory was taught in the Middle School. When I asked the School Board Chair he said, "He was already aware of the situation" and the principal determined it "was not being taught, but the subject came through discussion." This stance is contrary to what students and parents say occurred. Sadly, the School Board Chair also stated, "there are Christians and Adventists who view value attached to CRT." -An elementary male student was sexually assaulted by another boy who stated, "You're going to be my boyfriend whether you want to be or not." The same victim was later physically assaulted by the same boy then physically assaulted by a group of children. The parents spoke with leadership at all levels and say, "nothing was ever done." The father even brought it up at a school board meeting and CVA leadership acted very cowardly in neither apologizing nor affirming what had happened. -At the May school board meeting the principal brought up a situation at school involving numerous girls dressing inappropriately yet said nothing about the issues involving sexual and physical assaults or CRT. This total lack of transparency is common not only toward parents, but school board members. Do not assume that because the sign at the front of the school says "Adventist" you have nothing to worry about. This could not be further from the truth at CVA.

They have a excellent city swim team that often has a wait list. They also have great swimming lesions with young experienced enthusiastic teachers. Last year they added a snack bar with lots of variety of foods and drink. You can't go wrong here! we where members for years with lots of great memories and even now the kids are all grown up, we still like to visit!
