The trimesters and 4-day school week is well managed, and the students seem to retain more of their studies than the other regular school schedules. CCH is very good with communications to the parents about grades and event involvement. A high focus is placed on safety in and around the school. Academics as well as Attendance are priority while including any help the students or parents may need. We highly recommend City High to anyone looking to provide a very good quality and structured education for their children as they transition into the next phase of their life.

I drove by the school confused to where the school pick up was, circled the block, then asked the school crossing guard where do I pull up to pick up my child in a friendly tone. The crossing guard who is called Ms.Keisha was immediately hyper aggressive with me yelling "You gotta go, you can't park here, it's a bike lane, you'll get a ticket!!!" I point out a SUV to her that's parked in the bike lane with it's hazard lights in front of the school that's been sitting there for some time and say "what about that car?" She's becomes super irritated and angry, stands in the bike lane screaming "I'm not letting you thru, go!!!!!" "Just go!!! Damn!" I couldn't just go, kids were still crossing the street at the time. I'm just staring at her while she acts out. Now she's dropping F bombs in front of the kids without a care in the world. Just talking smack now but was too cowardly to look me in the eyes when she was talking smack. Mind you, the whole time from my first initial interaction with her, this woman was on her cell phone holding an non emergency conversation on her cell phone not focused on these kids safety while crossing the street. I also noticed her face mask was below her nose, what's the point of wearing a face mask if you aren't going to wear it correctly. Anyway, when I finally had a chance to go at the intersection I said to her "Have a nice day", she responded talking more smack. I don't think this woman has any idea what professionalism is. I called the school immediately after to report the incident. Whoever answered transfered me to principal Welsh phone to leave a voice message. I left a detailed message with my phone number and never received a follow up call after.

Falk School isn't a terrible place. I think there are a few cons, which I will start with, but it…read moredoes have its good traits, too. Also, I am a former student, having graduated in 2006, so hopefully having some inside knowledge will be helpful. The cons: 1) There was a "hiccup" (to put it lightly) about a recent performance that was not completely vetted before it was performed. It was called "Bread and Puppet" (or something like that) which caused a negative backlash among parents who currently have students there. 2) In specific regard to taking a foreign language class, the only language offered is Spanish. There's nothing wrong with learning it, but I think that the reason given, from what I have heard in the years since graduating Falk, was because there was not enough interest in adding another to the curriculum. Perhaps a good idea going forward would be to send out info prior to the start of the school year to see if the students would be interested in taking a language other than Spanish so that adequate planning can take place to accommodate it. All that being said, a few of the pros were: 1) Being that Falk is a small school, I know that it was easier for people to make friends and also to know where the strengths were in each subject. The teachers made it easier to understand what was being taught by not rushing through the materials and would make an effort to help by making sure to let students ask questions either in a group setting or one on one. 2) There were some fun events like the school carnival each spring and also going on the field trips throughout each year. Personally, I think having events like that were what made my time at Falk enjoyable.

Well, maybe not at me, but at a lot of great kids who've make a lot of great friends at Falk. The students learn languages, music, arts and crafts, math, science, history and more... plus there are good sports and recreational activities. This all happens in an environment where the staff are encouraged by the very important relationship between Falk and University of Pittsburgh, and Pitt's excellent School of Education. Other schools have good teaching, but Falk's relationship to Pitt means that new methods are being tried and that teaching is being augmented and improved routinely. When I was a student there, I spent one period a day for several weeks experimenting with a "teaching machine", which was a forerunner to the more advanced technology common in schools today. I want to stress that Falk's teachers are not machine substitutes. They are there to teach, to create a great learning environment, and to support the kids in every way. I loved Falk and your kids will, too! Arrange a visit and see for yourself.

Before starting the college application process, Emilia evaluated my circumstances and advised in a manner that met my family and I needs. She gave a lot of suggestions about what I should include in my college essay, how to structure my resume and the activities I should participate in throughout high school. It was her expert advice that helped set me apart from other applicants. It was hard work, but we had realistic goals and she made sure I understood the process especially my financial aid packages and ways to negotiate for more aid. Having Emilia's help was the best thing that could have happen to me throughout the last two years of high school!
