Filled out a request for quote and only received a message back that they can't provide the service. Wow. A printing company that can't print. Ignorant turds. I had an extremely frustrating experience with Pitch Black Printing that left me with a completely unusable product and no fair resolution. I ordered what I described as thank you cards, reasonably expecting folded cards with space to write inside -- which is standard across essentially every other print shop I've used, both online and locally. Instead, I received flat 4"x6" prints with full ink coverage on both sides, leaving zero space to write a thank-you note. As printed, the cards are unusable and can't be repurposed for any other event, making the entire order a loss. When I raised this, I was told the job was printed "to spec" and offered only a small discount on a full reprint -- meaning I would have to pay again to correct a problem caused by ambiguity in their process. There was no offer of a refund or complimentary reprint, despite the fact that the misunderstanding could have been prevented with minimal clarification. The underlying issue is Pitch Black Printing's order submission system, which relies on a bare-bones Google Form (name, email, and a free-response description). There are no clear, selectable options like "folded card vs. flat card," "opens vs. does not open," or "writeable interior." Customers are expected to know and correctly use print-industry terminology to avoid mistakes. If they invested even minimally in a modern ordering process with explicit choices instead of free-text descriptions, this issue likely would not have happened. What makes this especially frustrating is that staff took the time to double-check minor details like quantity (even asking if I wanted to increase it when I never mentioned doing so), yet never once clarified what kind of "card" I meant, despite later acknowledging that the term can mean different things to different customers. Given that the submitted design leaves no room for writing unless the card opens, this was an obvious place where clarification should have happened before printing. Secondarily, communication throughout the process was very slow. I submitted artwork on November 13, and the prints weren't ready for pickup until November 26 -- nearly two weeks for a small local print job. Responses from Maurice routinely took 24-72 hours, often accompanied by apologies for being behind on emails due to production or events. Those delays made an already frustrating situation harder to resolve in a timely way. Between the unusable final product, lack of accountability in resolving the issue, ambiguous ordering system, and slow communication, I can't recommend Pitch Black Printing -- especially for something as standard and expectation-driven as thank you cards. Here's my reply to Meagan's comment below(since yelp wont let you reply to comments): Hi Meagan, I want to clarify a few points in your response. When I first raised concerns, I explicitly stated in writing that I was traveling for Thanksgiving and unavailable for a phone call at that time. Additionally, my phone number was provided on the original order form, so there was nothing preventing a call at any other point before or after the holiday if clarification was needed. Framing this as an inability to connect overlooks both of those facts. Regarding communication timing, while I understand and respect that you are a small studio, response times throughout this process consistently ranged from 24 to 72 hours with one response coming in 7 days after my reply and another response coming in 5 days after my reply, both of these well after the issue was identified. Those delays materially contributed to how difficult it was to resolve a time-sensitive order. As for the resolution offered: the discount provided was 15% off a full reprint (later increased to 30% only after extended back-and-forth). In the printing industry, when a product is unusable for its stated purpose due to an ambiguity that could have been prevented with basic clarification or clearer ordering options, a complimentary reprint or substantial accommodation is standard. Asking a customer to pay most of the cost again is not a reasonable remedy for receiving a product that cannot be used at all. You also noted that your ordering process has since been updated. However, the entry point of the online ordering process remains unchanged -- customers are still asked to initiate orders through a free-response form without being guided through explicit, selectable options like "folded vs. flat" or "writeable interior." That was the core issue here, and it appears largely unresolved. I appreciate the acknowledgment that improvements are needed, but that recognition only came after the fact and at my expense. A day mixed with errands and goofing off. Traveling down 4th Street, Debbie P says there's this gallery / coffee shop she has heard about. Look ! There it is, let's stop. Some street parking and a small lot. But easy to find a spot on a Friday afternoon. The shop is located in the front portion of a printing shop. Cool industrial decor. Bright. A mix of brick, metal, cement, and drywall. With a wall of art on display. Open. Airy. Yet welcoming. The menu offers a variety of fully caffeinated to no caffeine teas, and coffee roasted by one of my favorites- CoffeeBar. It didn't take long for the owner the custom brew each of us an iced tea to go. The orange cranberry really his the spot on the toasty 93 degree afternoon. While the teas were brewing, we had a great chat with the one of the owners. He talked about the building, the philosophy, and the art. A great quiet space to enjoy a cup. Will definitely be putting this spot on my coffee list. read more

Locally owned and operated by a couple that has so much love for the community and is always giving back, how could you not want to send your business to them? As if that's not reason enough, just walk into their art gallery, coffee shop and print studio and you'll get a sense of the level of pride they take in the work they do. Pitch Black definitely specializes in some artsy prints, but they can do the basic work too. I had them print some posters and flyers for a community promotion I've organized and I was blown away by the final product. Yes, we used the cheapest stock for both, but whatever ink and coating they're using to create these prints had my stuff looking super fly and brilliantly vibrant. This review is solely regarding their coffee shop and their customer service. I was introduced to Pitch Black Printing yesterday as I took a tour through many of the businesses that are supporting the #YelpOutandAbout event that is supporting Our Center (https://www.yelp.com/biz/our-center-reno). Pitch Black Printing was my first stop and really set the mood for my day. I met Maurice and Megan and they are both wonderful! I had the chance to chat with Maurice quite a bit as he brewed some more tea. Obviously, such a man of substance. I ordered two of the event's special drinks: Prickle My Pear. This tasty drink includes White Peach Tea, Prickly Pear Syrup (which is a beautiful purple), Lemon, and garnished with a Rainbow Sour Candy. It was SOOO tasty!!! ...and gone way too soon! My only wish is that they had larger sizes, as well. I honestly refilled my cup a few times with water (that still had some lemon and prickly pear flavors going on), because it was THAT tasty. I also picked a Chocolate Chip cookie for the Yelp deal I received when I checked in for the first time. I believe that they have 3 flavors: Snickerdoodle, Oatmeal Raisin, and Chocolate Chip. They are all Vegan, Gluten Free, and sourced organically. Being gluten free for almost 9 years, I have tried a lot of GF baked goods. Not all with pleasure. LOL That was not the case here. This cookie was really tasty and FULL of moist chocolate chips. My daughter and I shared it today (24 hours later) and it was moist, flavorful, and did not crumble or fall apart. It is from Betts Baking Co (also in Reno). I most definitely recommend these to those who need gluten free especially, but also super tasty to others as well. Five stars and no less for Pitch Black Printing! They may be a small local company, but they're putting out amazing prints. I was referred to Pitch Black Printing by a friend and as any of you know, referrals are hit or miss. I was greeted at the front door by a little barking dog and Megan (co-owner) of the shop. All I could think was this is weird, but after speaking to Megan I was sold! I have had several of my designs worked on by a few company's in the last year and was unhappy with the work and digital design is damn expensive! I was giving an price that I could say is not the cheapest, but I agreed to let there team redesign a few of our company labels and when I picked up the prints and looked them over I would have paid double the price!
