Phil Foster, owner of the Pinnacle Ranch.
Wilhelm Y.

Phil Foster (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=JcPQHCbmfgjop4_EjzCpkQ) is a very unique type of farmer. In listening to him he explains to us how many believe that California farm workers are some of the most overworked and under appreciated workers in the state and how that is not the case at the Pinnacle Ranch. Phil is a different type of employer in the farming industry. He's quite well known among his peers as somebody who takes care of his workers. The workers who are employed at Phil Foster's Pinnacle Ranch farming communities in San Juan Bautista (50 acres) and in Hollister (200 acres) enjoy a wide range of benefits including fair wages and medical coverage. Phil Foster runs his farms in a very notable fashion as well. His farms are some of the most environmentally concious in the state using solar power for electricity and recycled well water for irrigating his crops. He produces 2000 pounds of compost (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=szXhX2tcRuPQ3i6ifIawVw) annually for use on his crops, uses cover crops to add nutrients to the soil of specific types of crops and recycles as much used products as possible. All of the farm's vehicles are run on recycled biodiesel fuels. His farm is certified organic in the state of California and he is quite proud about the exclusive ways his farm is run. This past weekend Phil took a few hours out from his busy schedule to offer a group of us a very unique tour of his farm in San Juan Bautista. His farms are currently in its 21st season of being certified organic. That's a lot longer than most. The farms feature over 60 varieties in crops and they sell mostly everything themselves at 11 farmers markets within a 100 mile radius of the farm. At the San Juan Bautista farm 45 workers are employed with 25 to 30 workers present on most days except Sundays which he allows most of his workers to take off. Some of the tour focused in on a series of structures (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=eZWie0W6Yn1pIFnpBOKzlQ) that he built onto the property some 8 to 12 years ago. These buildings house his offices in addition to cooler rooms where much of the harvested crops are stored. The crops grown at the San Juan Bautista farm are mostly winter crops such as leafy vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, celery (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=EL3GvAh1a-dhpiY73PYiPw), cilantro, lettuce, leeks (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=lzaJh4PcmTFH0M8cyMPciw) and fennel. There are two varieties of strawberries on the farm, and Phil was quite generous in allowing our tour group to walk through his strawberry fields to pick and sample the fresh Albion (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=hKxQQPiBqAfmlDpg0rkurA) and CG3 (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=lXYAy-zj8u_zovlMsYlQQQ) varieties of berries (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=7YyZccpWWhhGjyY8xpK7_Q). As we walked throughout his farm he stopped at different crop rows to give us tidbits of information on soil management and pest control. When we arrived upon his apple orchard Phil offered his generosity once again by asking us to pick some of the Braeburn apples (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/Yh0YFJzKDqnCkkWAZGudpA?select=HpNSPqyRWGus_DdbOAbuCg) from his trees to sample. Three types of apples are harvested on this farm, but Phil admitted that the Braeburn variety is among his favorites. Phil also explained to us that in the past most of his apples have been sold to Martinelli's for juicing, but beginning this season the ranch will be developing their own brand of apple juices to be sold exclusively at their farmers market locations. For the tour we basically covered the majority of his current crops ending at his cherry orchard where he explained why his cherry trees are all cut down so low. He does this so his workers don't need to climb on ladders in order to pick the fruit. In addition he explained how nets are used to cover each tree during the cherry harvesting season to keep birds and insects from eating his fruit. Love all the affordably priced organic produce at Pinnacle!

The Saturday morning Farm Stand is amazing! They have a wide variety of organic produce available in one place at very affordable prices. I'm so happy to be able to buy directly from a grower and support a great local ranch!

Well, it's always easy for me to find this farm's bounty in going to the Ferry Farmers' market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. They started participating in the market about two years ago and, at first, I mainly only bought strawberries (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=JO1Cnr4pkcFCVEEfFkGKYA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) from them. Over the past eighteen months, I've become an avid fan of their vegetables especially their cauliflower (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=gC_FKh5f_f7M2Gj7ZbUB4A&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), cabbage, broccoli, and broccolini. I generally cook them within the week to preserve their freshness in flavors and textures, after all they are organic. And, when tomatoes are back in season, check whether they offer their self made salsas. They have become one of my weekly and sometimes twice weekly shopping stops at the Ferry Building. Do look for their stand by the main building entrance on the north side on Tuesdays and along the south driveway at Saturdays.

Once we found Green Thumb Organics we never looked back and have been with them for years. They have provided us with a yummy, healthy, beautiful, environmentally friendly bounty of food over the past few years and we have loved all of the spectacular fare that their hard work has prepared. Maria and Rudy are the kindest most hardworking and thoughtful people you will ever encounter. Their adversity and hard work is impressive having helped them adapt and persevere through some extremely difficult situations including the COVID shutdown and the recent floods. Rudy, himself, not only works the farm, but every week drives hundreds of miles and delivers his hard work with a beautiful, heartfelt smile on his face - always. Maria answers every email and addresses every question or ordering platform navigation challenges that one may run into. Their homemade salsa and marinara are scrumptiously spectacular! I literally buy 5 jars of salsa at a time every couple of weeks. Their prices are very low for what you receive. This is the last CSA you will ever need. Stop shopping and sign up with them. You'll feel better supporting a local, small business while being economical and environmental, helping you and/or your family's physical and mental health.

Nice ambiance and the staff was friendly (although, the server had a shirt that said NOPE so didn't know what to expect) but they didn't take my drink order. Had to get my own Bubly water from the staff fridge. When the food arrived I couldn't help but notice the bus staff staring at my table in anticipation of something, it was a bit awkward but I brushed it off and began my meal. I was pleasantly surprised to find pickled red onions and an ample amount of crema piled on top of the partially melted cheese. The carnitas tasted fresh and well seasoned, but you could tell it had been reheated for lunch service. My pup loved the crunchy chips and carnitas. Over all, pleasant experience but I am giving them 4 stars because the service staff disappeared after dropping food so I had to clear my own plate and wash my coffee mugs. I will be recommending to friends.

From the juicy red strawberries to the bright yellow lemons and everything in between, Coke Farm is the real deal, the best in quality deal and the best tasting deal in organic produce. Take Coke Farm strawberries, for instance. A 1 pound container holds the rubiest red berry, the deepest green stems. The strawberries are at least the size of a golf ball and the taste of heaven and juciness is in every single bite. It never hurts to have asthetically pleasing fruits and vege's and that's what Coke Farm does so well. The only inedible part of a Cook Farm strawberry is the stem. Their package label is red, green & white. Just like the anticipation of Christmas Eve, Coke Farm produce is a delight to see. Door-to-Door Organics in Chicago, delivers a lot of Coke Farm goodness, as those wonderful strawberries arrived this week!

Their mesclun and lettuce mixes ($5/lb bag or loose) are really exceptional and typically last all week long. The tomato and melon offerings in the summer are great, and the autumn stuff, like squash, radishes, kale, chard, etc. are also go-to picks for us. The fresh herbs are lovely and cost around $1.25 for a decently-sized bunch. We also get their fennel to slice it razor-thin in our mandolin or toss it in vegetable soups spiked with brown miso paste. Great stuff! The Happy Boy crew also won the San Mateo Halloween costume contest this year, which was a lot of fun. Saturday mornings at the College of San Mateo parking lot is the hottest ticket in town!

So my roommate Elliot (real dark red head) is a super regular their on Tuesdays and he always leaves some trail mix stuff out. Now I'm not "crunchy" or hippy dippy and normally don't dig on what some people would call birdfood although I know it is packed with nutrients etc... and I tried and it and I have to be honest. This particular mix doesn't look specail at all, not a fancy assortment or a wild range of colorful edible goodies, just a nice blend of basics and then some and what a great baggie fille with wonderful flavors. The one I'm talking about is called the "Deluxe Trail Mix". Then I've been on this kick and get dried sliced Mangos from Trader Joe's and I tried theirs and they are up there my friends... "Natural Mangos" (new crop from our Neighbors - Mexico) are just slightly sweet and uber tasty. Like paradise in your boca guey. Ok and the last thing I tried and of course got were the "Chocolate Covered Blenheim Apricots". Ummm kickass and killer! I've been meaning to up my intake of fruits! It worked out! All this (4 bags in total - I got 2 Deluxe Trail Mix) for only $10!!! No wonder why my roomie goes there almost every week. Don't miss this fun and luscious fruit and nut stand. Forget your Frutas from da Casa... It's all about the Apricot Farm.
