Instead, I was walking down Istedgade and was drawn to Vinstue's street side tables adorned with pretty flowers. For dinner, they had a bunch of tapas dishes (each were 95dk, and 3 plates are recommended for sharing) with strange game meats like ox heart and quail (which the waitress said was goose despite the menu, so I'm not sure what to believe anymore). We got a fish, the quail/goose, and the ox tail. All three dishes were delightfully adorned with fresh herbs and vegetables, and I'm glad to be getting my fiber in. The fish was a little too salty, but the parsley purée, white asparagus and free basket of seeded rolls balanced it out. My favorite dish by far was the quail/goose - it had a morel mushroom sauce, rich and caramelly carrot purée and fresh peas bursting with pea flavor. I'm not even a big vegetable person but I loved the combination of the gamey bird meat with the vegetables. The third and final plate was the oxtail - it came with mashed potato that was a little smoky and very savory. The oxtail was fork-tender and the dish came with both pickled and fresh sliced carrots with fried turnip (?) crisps. I was also glad that the waitress recommended that our plates arrive in a certain order so we could appreciate each to its fullest. The glass of Pinot Noir I got complemented my meal wonderfully. Overall, a great place to people watch and eat while in Vesterbro!

So much so that I came here twice during our five-day stay. It's a cozy place, with feather throws and metal chairs, seats by windows and candles lit on every table, on every nook and corner. If you're not here when it first opens in the morning, you may need to wait or find another place to eat, since it's one of few places that open before 10 on a weekend. The breakfast choices were divine. Egg over rye toast, or the full breakfast special complete with delicious ham, cheese, melons, fried egg, and rye bread. So good and so fresh, I was in LOVE. I honestly do not know what to say about the rating for this place on Yelp. Both times I went, I came out extremely happy and satisfied with everything. Lovely gem of a place.

Once you find that, it's past the graffiti, up the stairs, and through an unmarked-and-nearly-invisible door behind you. Once you get inside, it's a different world. Giant wooden beams support the ceiling, oil lamps provide gently glowing illumination, and Berkeley / San Francisco-grade hipsters weave between the tables, dropping off plates laden with braised mushrooms, mashed potatoes with leeks, and lamb cutlets. I went for the venison, with whipped potatoes and berry compote. The venison was past tender into soft --- good, but not what I was hoping for. My wife got fish, with a salmon-spinach souffle, some fennel, shrimp, fried potatoes, and a good helping of creamy sauce. We started with a soup --- translated for us as "like carrots, but white," which we think was parsnip --- that was creamy and rich, but still nicely light. The house red wine was good --- but the house white was absolutely amazing. You have to try it. The meals were quite good, but didn't manage to be as memorable as the experience;

I'm not about to tell you that Retour Steak serves up the best beef dishes in the world because in my opinion, they don't. One would have travel to Japan for the best steak (Sorry Nebraska). But I will tell you this, FOR THE PRICE nothing comes close to this place. We made it a point to check this place out and after a previous attempt the night before decided to come by earlier. We arrived around 5:45 and already the dining room was crazy busy. The hostess did however find one available table, but that they would need the table later for an 8:00 reservation. If you're taking notes. Make a reservation! Since we had well over two hours, we knew we could take our time and have a cocktail to start. Handwritten on the special drinks for the evening "sidecar". Hello?! Music to my ears. My friend and I each ordered up a sidecar and a charcuterie platter to start. The sidecars were perfect, and even though I usually have mine made with whisky I went with the flow and let them make mine with cognac. It was delicious. The charcuterie was a small serving but perfect to share. Each of the meats were amazing. I wish I knew what the darker meat was, because that one was truly out of this world kick ass delicious. Steak time! And there are plenty of choices. But really this would be a no brainer as I am a fan of this little thing called the French fry. And the ribeye comes with those crispy potato things. Ribeye "medium rare" please. I'll get right to the point. The steak was cooked to perfection. It came topped with a little rosemary and roasted garlic. The garlic was the winner and enhanced the steak even more. I even saved a few to eat along with my fries. By the way, these fries were about as good as I have had in a long ASS time. Almost as good as I had in Belgium (which by the way is the Hall of Fame of fries). I did save room for dessert and again, this was an easy choice. The profiteroles were shouting out my name. Again, they scored a perfect 10. We each had a glass of dessert wine, a moscato and a tawny port which both were amazing. I can't stress how much I loved this place. And again, the fact that this place is reasonably priced makes it that much better. It's not cheap mind you, but for a steakhouse it's about as inexpensive you will find. The service was impeccable and constantly had servers checking in on us. They were also very helpful when it came to our wine selections. Just FYI, if you are standing on Østergade street and can't find the place, it's actually located on Ny Østergade 21 which is a side street off the main street (running perpendicular).
