I buy all of my fish at one of two fish mongers in Copenhagen: Hav (at Torvehallerne), or Nørreport Fiskehus. Yes, I know they are very close to one another, and yes, I wish one of these two places was located a little bit closer to Frederiksberg, but no matter.
Hav is what I call reliable. If you've ever lived anywhere outside of Denmark, you probably know exactly what I mean here. I can't tell you how many times I've gone somewhere KNOWING that some store had something I wanted the last time I was there, only to find that on this visit, no dice. Hav keeps a good stock of your fishy basics year-round, and then of course specializes in the seasonal stuff (shellfish not excluded). For those of us ballsy enough to try a seafood recipe with marlin in it or something, they import those too (warning in advance that it's not cheap - but at least it's available).
I still haven't gotten over how expensive even local seafood is in Denmark given that we are SURROUNDED BY WATER, but nevermind - I don't go to Hav to save money. They have excellent caviar by the way (speaking of not saving money), and even though their salmon filets go for 40kr a piece, they are always good. read more
