There are so many visitors to the fabulous hilltop/plateau city of Taormina in eastern Sicily, but far fewer make the 1,000-step climb to much smaller but impressively beautiful town of Castelmola, situated above Taormina. Hint: you can take a bus or drive up as well... but burn off those cannoli calories and get a little climb in your day!
After our sweaty and tiring climb, we were delighted by the smaller, quieter feel of Castelmola as compared to the very bustling Taormina. And right near Castelmola's main piazza is the lovely Pier de Cat wine bar. We popped in here for some delicious refreshments and snacks. The view from here of the sea is unbeatable and again, much quieter and private.
The list of drinks is long and fantastic, including a solid selection of Sicilian wines (including ones from close by) that the staff is happy to tell you more about. They've got a few delicious salads - I liked the Misto Classico - to enjoy alongside that long wine list, before you head back downhill to Taormina's bustling streets. Lovely place and we hope to be back! read more
