Our waitress, Jean, was informed of a celiac disease diagnosis and initially demonstrated an understanding of cross-contamination. She advised against certain appetizers and recommended substituting filet mignon for the soy-marinated skirt steak in the blackened steak and pasta dish. She confirmed the order was flagged for a gluten allergy and gluten-free pasta was requested. When the meal arrived with rigatoni instead of the usual gluten-free penne, Jean questioned it herself and checked with the kitchen. She returned and confirmed that the pasta was gluten-free. Shortly afterward, Barbara, the front-of-house manager, informed us that the pasta was NOT gluten-free. Jean later explained that the chef, Julio, believed only the steak needed to be gluten-free. This represents a serious breakdown in communication and food safety protocols. Despite clear notification, an allergy flag, and direct confirmation from the kitchen, a gluten-containing meal was served to someone with celiac disease. Management comped the entire check and provided a $100 gift card, which was appreciated. However, compensation does not negate the seriousness of the incident. Celiac disease is a medical condition, not a dietary preference. Restaurants that offer gluten-free accommodations must have reliable procedures in place to ensure customer safety. Unfortunately, this experience raises significant concerns about the restaurant's ability to safely accommodate guests with dietary restrictions.
