Another great state park in Georgia. There's four different loops that go around this civil war battlefield. All of them are less than 2 miles each and are of a moderate to easy hike. The white trail loop takes you to the old 1853 restored picketts mill cabin. The museum inside the visitor center depicts the events leading to the battle, through the battle and up to the siege of Atlanta. They do offer military discounts here for my friend and I it was $7 total. Back to the museum, it also holds original period weapons and cannons from the battle. It's very natural , quiet and very well preserved.

Pickett's Mill boasts several, interconnected and well defined hiking trails. None of them are strenuous although there are some elevation changes. I hiked all four defined trails (red, blue, white, Brand House) in about two hours. Very pleasant hiking/walking but there are lots of annoying gnats near the creeks. All the trials are uni-directionally marked (red, blue, white paint on one side of the trees only), not visible if you're walking the other direction. Not sure why. This isn't much of a problem in terms of navigation except one spot on the white trail where I had to take one fork and look behind me to see if there were white markings on the trees. Of course, if you walk the trails in the correct direction, it's not a problem at all. There are no historical markers at all on the trails. There are some posts recently installed along the trails that are ready for informational placards but, according to the guys in the office, that's not in the works any time soon. Brand House trail has little evidence of a house. And by 'little', I mean none. In fact, there is little evidence of anything historical on any of the trails except some earthwork fortifications (unmarked). It's essentially like hiking in any of the other state parks in the area. Mind you, I walked without benefit of the trail handouts, which might point out things. I forgot to check whether they did when I returned to the visitor center. But if you don't have them with you, you will learn nothing about the history of Pickett's Mill. I didn't check out the museum.

Don't be shocked if you hear gunfire at the state historic site. In addition to miles of beautiful walking trails, picturesque meadows, and a surprising amount of wildlife, Pickett's Mill also hosts the occasional Civil War Re-enactment, which was the impetus for my visit. My natural loving self loved exploring the many acres of natural forest, and my history geek side loved watching some seriously costumed Civil War buffs fire gun powder rifles, stalk the opponents' camp, and even fire a huge cannon (twice!). What was even better was seeing the looks on visitors' faces who didn't know a re-enactment was going on when a rifle-bearing Confederate emerged from the woods. Comedic gold, I tell you. It's five bucks admission for adults, or free if you're a friend of the Georgia State Parks and totally worth it. Make it a Saturday morning to remember by stopping by my favorite breakfast place (Stilesboro Biscuits) just a couple of miles away on your way in.

Maybe I took the wrong path, but there were no historical markers or details. People were nice. Would have enjoyed more facts while on the trail. Otherwise it was just a nice walk in the woods. I have been to many battlefield parks, this one has potential, but needs to learn from the others.

Went here in May 2012 with some other folks. I think we got a good 3-4 miles of hiking in, given the hilly trails and meandering paths there. Bring water and good shoes!!!

I booked Chris and Rebecca for a wine tour during a birthday/life celebration trip my friend and I…read morewere on. Rebecca was incredibly easy to communicate with and helped me set everything up ahead of time. I felt incredibly taken care of from the first interaction through when they dropped us off at our doorstep and carried our wine to the door. Chris picked my friend and I up and we met Rebecca with the van which they decorated with a darling happy birthday sign, cold water, and an assortment of snacks. I was blown away by their hospitality. Before hitting the road they reviewed the wineries we planned to visit and then we were off. Rebecca drove safely and made conversation with us along the way. Chris was very knowledgeable about the vineyards and wines. Each time we arrived at a new vineyard Chris opened the car door and offered his hand as we stepped down from the van. He opened the vineyard door and helped us find seats at each winery, and then gave us space to enjoy our tasting. Between tastings he made sure we were comfortable and had plenty of water and snacks. He even brought our next tasting out to our seats so that we wouldn't need to get up- it was truly FULL service in every single way. I never once felt rushed by him or Rebecca, and their smiling faces and easy demeanor really created the perfect environment for my friend and I to cut loose and enjoy ourselves. After our tastings we said goodbye and Chris drove us back to our cabin where he personally carried the box of wine to our front door. He thanked us for spending the day with him and was on his way. I cannot recommend Chris and Rebecca enough! I will absolutely be booking with them again. I highly recommend them for any trip! Their prices are incredibly reasonable- and the service is top notch. I was blown away and cannot wait to book another trip with them!
