Piazza Navona is so long that it has not one or two fountains but THREE Baroque-style masterpieces! One of Rome's most famous squares, this piazza is formerly an ancient Roman chariot track, AKA the race track back in the days. Today, it is one of Rome's most iconic and beautiful piazzas especially at night. Pick your favorite Piazza Navona fountains! Is it one of the Giacomo della Porta's two fountains, the Moorish Neptune in the south or the Roman Neptune in the north? To me, my favorite is the grandest of the three: Bernini's Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of Four Rivers), a beautiful masterpiece recently featured as a main plot piece in Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons"! Under the shade of the Egyptian obelisk, Bernini masterfully sculptured a backdrop for four male gods representing the four major rivers of the papal domain, each with vivid emotions and actions depicting their characteristics like the Nile hiding its head as its source was unknown at that time. The piazza is also surrounded by popular gelateria like Grom and restaurants, but you don't need to dine here to enjoy this classic Roman piazza. There's lots of things going on here so you won't be bored. You can eat, take pictures, go to a church, or people watch with a gelato. I just sat near a fountain and just took everything in. It's a pretty good place hang out and take a break, especially from walking so much as a tourist. I would recommend at least walking by. read more

On my first trip to Italy as a young backpacker, Piazza Navona was the spot I landed in (short of the train station and an inner-city bus ride) - and I will be forever grateful for that. This is the quintessential Italian Piazza, large and oval shaped as if it were built over an early Roman Circus with pave stones and fountains. The central fountain is one of the best in Rome. It shows giant human likenesses representing the four great rivers of the world: including the Nile, the Amazon, and the Danube. The fountain is large (huge by the standards of its age), tall with an obelisk, and almost white. It is truly impressive, and the gushing water can be heard, and smelled (a sweet fresh scent) throughout the piazza. There are two lesser fountains on either end as well, both beautiful but also merely footnotes to the big one. The rest of the cobblestone paved ground within the piazza's periphery is free of structures, save some benches and an occasional stall or street artist display.. The magnificence of Piazza Navona is underscored by how the beautiful Renaissance buildings that surround the piazza like a series of high walls with hundreds of windows, from apartments to churches to museums, create a theatrical effect - as if it were all a grand movie set. And many of these buildings have numerous outdoor cafes and restaurants at their bases. It is the perfect place to take in the morning buzz over coffee, bread, and jam. Or an afternoon pizza. Yes the square is nice with an oblisk, several nice fountains, especialy the one depicting the four great rivers, there is seating on the edges of the main part, lots of restaurants all around, performers looking for tips (their quite good) and people everywhere. My stragy was to find some Gelato (it was like a gelato truffle, really good but so rich I barly finished, i got it at a place across the plaza from the marked path to the Pantheon.) then I sat and people watched, It was all great..then on to the Pantheon! read more

Ah, Piazza Navona! It's so beautiful and really exudes all the charm of Rome. Bustling with tourists and locals, street musicians, artists and more. Check it out at least once if you are in the city. The fountains are breathtaking (but hang on to your valuables as pickpockets are all over the place). This is my most favorite piazza in all of Rome. Piazza Navona is definetley one of favorite piazzas in Rome! The public square has three beautiful and distinct fountains and is always filled with people. It's a great place to observe the architecture and people watch; however, don't get too close to anyone as they may be trying to pick-pocket you. The history of the piazza is ro rich and interesting! As a city market for over 300 years, Piazza Navona was actually built upon the remains of the Domitian Stadium. Now, it serves as a market place and free tourist attraction equipped with vendors and entertainment. The three fountains in the square are the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (the one in the middle with the obelisk), the Fontana del Nettuno, and the Fontana del Moro. Bernini himself is the main master of design for the work in the piazza. Probably because it has this really cool lion in a hunting pose, the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is my favorite. There are four statues surrounding this fountain, which are supposed to represent the four famous rivers-The Nile, Ganges, Danube and Rio de la Plata. A visit to the the piazza is just like any other piazza in Rome-beautiful during the day and at night, and if you can make your way to check it out during both the AM & PM, I would highly recommend it. read more

This is one of our favorite Piazza's in Roma. It is centrally located, a short 10 minute walk from the Pantheon and worth the visit. While one of the best activities here might be people watching, having lunch in one of the nearby restaurants, or attending the occasional street markets which are held during warmer months it has not always been that way. The Piazza used to be a square where Romans would watch the "games". Today, the square is adorned with charming shops, buildings, and fountains. There is ample room for the market if you are so lucky to be able to attend, and the fountains are amazing. They are the Fontana del Moro, Fountain of Neptune, and the Fontana de Quattro Fiumi. The Square was written in Dan Brown's Book, "Angels and Demons". If you are a movie buff, Ron Howard directed several scenes of the film within the square. If you enjoy taking pictures, it is a wonderful site to do just that! read more

This public square has been in use since the first century and features a wide open space that has a lot going on. The centerpiece of the Piazza is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) by Bernini and is topped by the Obelisk of Domitian from the original Circus of Maxentius. It was a cool place to pass through and see with a lot of activity and surroundings that were just breathtaking. The buildings that enclose the square are beautiful and the people are lively and fun. Unfortunately this seems to have become another tourist trap... something you shouldn't miss while here but not a "secret yelp" spot that no one knows about. "WOOOOOOW" yes, that was me... my reaction to this amazing place! Well worth the trek / visit! No really, it's not just another piazza or another fountain.... it's awe inspiring! Yes, it might be hot if you're there during the summer but there's lots of stores and restaurants for some much needed reprieve from the glaring heat! For art geeks like myself, Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers was another check of my bucket list! It's really so much better to see in person rather than my art books! When I studied abroad 8 years ago, we had an assignment to sketch this piazza. Even then, this piazza took my breath away, as do many other piazzas and monuments in Italy. I have been to Rome three times now and only ever come here in early winter. The area is not as packed during this time of year and you can get as many uncrowded photos as you want. The fountains light up at night and creates a really romantic atmosphere. My advice, though, is to avoid dining at the restaurants at this piazza. They are major tourist traps - all charge a sit-down service fee and cappuccino can get as pricey as €6. Most people go straight to the fountains, take their photos and leave. I suggest taking a nice, slow stroll around the whole piazza to absorb its beauty fully from all angles. read more

Another must-see Roman site. It's about 3 or 4 city blocks long, and about half a block wide, and closed to vehicular traffic. The piazza is filled with street artists and vendors surrounding about 3 fountains, and encompassed by restaurants and shops. The square has lots of restaurants and street performers. The fountain is beautiful in day and night. Tre Scalini was an excellent restaurant- a little pricey but worth it. The tartufo is delicious! It's $10 if sit down but only $5 to take away. Spend some time watching street performers and exploring the streets off the square. read more

One of my more favourite piazzas in Rome. PN is very sparse and beautiful with the two fountains in the north and south ends, surrounded by a multitude of restaurants buildings and some shops. The piazzas of Rome serve as a wonderful meeting place for people for many activities of life. In Italian society the meeting of people is important. Whether it's men to hang out and chat, watch football, eat food, play cards, sip an espresso, it's an important fabric of societal life. I feel like the piazzas were created with urban planning mindset to support this! We used Piazza Navona as a marking place for direction as it's easy to get lost in the winding streets of Rome. Sure there are souvenir vendors, people trying to sell artwork and prints, this is Roma and they flock to where there is foot traffic! This is a beautiful and amazing open piazza. The 3 Bernini fountains in the piazza are masterfully and amazingly sculptured. Great opportunity for memorable picture taking. Many high priced restaurants surround the piazza. Artists displayed their amazing work which is for sale. Prices range from $20 euros up to $100 euros. A variety of entertainment comes through this piazza like singers and musicians. This is a great place to sit, rest and people watch for several hours. I was not sure about this outing or if it would be worth the walk in the 93 degree heat but I ended up loving it. As an American, I thought this big open space for people to just... be, was very cool because back home they definitely would have used it for a McDonald's or something. I came here at the end of April and it was a very nice location in Italy. This place is great for people watching and really just relaxation while sucking in the environment around you. There's plenty of restaurants nearby although the prices seem to be a little bit higher than usual. There's also a bus stop right outside where you can easily go to a variety of places around town.this place also has a few souvenir shops and also a church where you can visit and also take pictures of there's a lot of people out dancing exploring taking pictures it really just in joy in life. I really enjoyed this location I was suggest coming here if you are just walking around town and wanting to take in something that's a little more local but still somewhat of a tourist location. read more

And at its center, Bernini's epic Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi and the majestic Chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone. "NBD," Rome was quoted to have replied nonchalantly. this hasn't changed much since 2000. The fountains are amazing and it is beautiful at night. A great people watching spot too! Other than the street folks trying to sell you something it was nice. #172-2016: Can one overlook excessively expensive restaurants/bars? Sure! Who needs to eat so and so food with such a great view as this? Can someone avoid spending money on stiffed-priced portraits offered from vendors in the square? Of course they can. Should these 2 not so great factors present in this square prevent the reviewers to assign a full 5 stars to this location? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! This is what dreams are made of.. The fountains present in this square are some of the best masterpieces ever sculpted, people cross oceans to admire the FONTANA DEI QUATTRO FIUMI (fountain of the 4 rivers) by Lorenzo Bernini (simply breathtaking with amazing details) the FONTANA DEL MORO (fountain of the moor) sculpted with 4 tritons by Giacomo della Porta (to which Bernini added the statue of a moor) as well as the FONTANA DI NETTUNO (fountain of Neptune), by Giacomo della Porta. The center of the square is adorned by the Obelisk of Domitian (brought from Circo Massimo). But, this square isn't famous just for its magnificent fountains (I found myself snapping pictures of for a good 30 minutes). Palazzo Pamphili also adorns this square with its Baroque Roman style, as well as the church of St. Agnese di Agone and church Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore. I am sure Piazza Navona will be among your next Roman itinerary, and I am sure you will (as I did) fall in love with the amazing sculptures and overlook the annoying pressures from both the vendors as well as those pressuring you to "stop by for a drink". I mean really, what's not to love? Lots of local artisans can be found here as well as entertainers. Come for the people watching, beautiful fountain, architecture, etc. And go elsewhere to eat: restaurants are overpriced and not that great. However the atmosphere is pretty lovely, so perhaps it can be overlooked! The only thing that drove me somewhat insane was the guys walking around selling the neon, rave-like, flare things and laser pointers. Rome should ban them. Horrible. Protip: If you do sit at one of the cafes outdoors to enjoy the square, sit one table in -- edge dwellers will be subjected to no less than 100 attempts to sell you trinkets, collapsible bowls, aggressive roses and the like. read more

So I'm still waiting for the day I return to Rome after tossing that Euro over my shoulder at the Trevi Fountain 8 years back....wishing I had spent it on a cuppa sexy CAPOOCHO instead. But anyways, please note that Piazza Navona is listed under "Nightlife" yet everyone visits this place during the day. So those who have never been to this piazza at night are really missing out, where it develops a unique, somewhat sinister and gothic like, yet romantic feel once the sun sets. It's not quite Cassablanca, but definitely a timeless classic. Kind of like the Amadeus move scenes from the 1980s about Mozart (filmed in Prague) but different. With sufficient evening lighting, even they shine some lights on the fountain statues, where they look especially gorgeous against the dark skies. It sure beats paying $$$ to go to a museum, since you can enjoy such beauty outdoors in the evening for free. So go to dinner somewhere, and in the evening taking a leisure stroll through this piazza, and enjoy it. Better watch out before they steal this idea and charge entrance fees in the evening... read more

Large beautiful square with sculptures and a fountain. Unfortunately that is kind of where it ends. The few shops and restaurants don't make this a place that you can really take a lot of time in. But definitely worth the walk through. Take as much time in all of the Piazzas as you can as Rome has so much cool history to offer up to us. It was amazing all the architecture it's probably better to go on a tour because there are so many different statues it would be nice to know a little about each statue. Remember where you park it's easy to get lost because everything starts to look the same. My favorite were the roasted chestnuts they sold along the street and the gelato was a must. read more

I loved this square! A must see on a trip to Rome. The Piazza Navona is one of the largest squares in Rome, but is still intimate. No cars drive around the square, so it allows for tourists and artist to mingle and interact casually. Plenty of restaurants and shops surround the Piazza and neighboring side streets, as well as the 10 or so restaurants on the square itself that overlooks the artists and street performers. After I spent some time at the Piazza Navona, I meandered down a few side streets to the Bar Fico which is in a hidden little alcove. Great for a beer and panini. read more
