Visiting the many plazas are part of the fun of exploring Rome without the extreme crowds of the major attraction. Among the many plazas, Piazza Navona is one of the more popular ones. It's an open space in an oval area that was once a space for athletic competition during ancient times. There is so much energy in this space. In addition to the restaurants and local shops, we also saw street performers and artists hang out in the area. This was truly where art and culture blended. My favorite part of this plaza was definitely the stunning fountain, which featured four river gods, representing the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Rio de la Plata. Definitely a great place to hang out and enjoy a gelato *wink*
I absolutely loved coming here. So majestic during the holidays. The decor and the ambiance is great. A nice open space with a Merry-Go Round. Tons of vendors selling xmas ornaments and other items. I spent a couple of hours here people watching and shopping and take in the scenery. The fountain in the middle of the piazza is amazing. So stunning It is built on the site of the 1st century AD Stadium of Domitian and follows the form of the open space of the stadium in an elongated oval.[1] The ancient Romans went there to watch the games In the 17th century it became a showcase for Baroque design, with work by Bernini and Borromini among others. The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi stands in front of the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.
Built on the elongated perimeter of the ancient Domitian Stadium, known as "Circo Agonalis," where gymnastic competitions took place, Piazza Navona is one of the most beautiful and famous squares in Rome with its showy fountains, baroque palazzi, and colorful cast of street artists. My partner, our friends, family member, and I visited this spot in September during our golf cart tour. Since it was refurbished by Pope Innocent X, it has been a gathering spot for people from all over Rome and all walks of life, and it continues to be so to this day. At its center stands Gian Lorenzo Bernini's magnificent Fountain of the Four Rivers (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi), completed in 1651. This dynamic sculpture represents the four great rivers of the known continents at the time--the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube, and the Río de la Plata--each embodied by a powerful figure surrounding an ancient Egyptian obelisk. Two other fountains adorn the piazza: the Fontana del Moro at the southern end, depicting a Moor wrestling a dolphin, and the Fontana del Nettuno at the northern end, featuring Neptune battling a sea creature. Together, these fountains create a harmonious rhythm across the square, uniting art, mythology, and the musical sound of water. The church of Sant'Agnese in Agone added so much charm to the scene. The best part was no entrance fee, no crowds, just a short line. Once one steps inside, the interior is a feast for the eyes. Rich marble work, ornate gold details, and stunning frescoes create an atmosphere of grandeur and devotion. Whether one's stopping by during the day or in the evening, the space itself feels like stepping into an open-air museum--full of charm and atmosphere.
Another cool piazza featuring an obelisk, a church, a fountain, outdoor shopping kiosks, indoor shops and restaurants featuring gelato, coffee and wine. This was my favorite of the piazzas that I visited. This area is walkable from the Pantheon.
An alright plaza with two different statues, the plaza is huge and enjoyable at night. The sight was great. However, there isn't much to do when we were here. Unless you have anything else to do around here, i wouldn't go out of the way to come this place
Piazza Navona is a public open space in Rome, Italy. It is built on the site of the 1st century AD Stadium of Domitian and follows the form of the open space of the stadium in an elongated oval. The ancient Romans went there to watch the agones ("games"), and hence it was known as "Circus Agonalis" ("competition arena"). In the 17th century it became a showcase for Baroque design, with work by Bernini and Borromini among others. The Fountain Of Four Rivers stands in front of the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone. Piazza Navona has two other fountains. At the southern end is the Fontana del Moro with a basin and four Tritons sculpted by Giacomo della Porta (1575) to which, in 1673, Bernini added a statue of a Moor, wrestling with a dolphin. At the northern end is the Fountain of Neptune (1574) also created by Giacomo della Porta; the statue of Neptune, by Antonio Della Bitta, was added in 1878 to create a balance with La Fontana del Moro. The church is so beautiful, and you can just sit in the middle of the Piazza on a bench and with the fountains going and all the people walking around, you can always catch a show going on, You can sit there all day and just sit back and enjoy the atmosphere and breathtaking vir
Beautiful Piazza with multiple fountains, at the time they did not look like they were working. The square offered a number of choices in restaurants along the outside. Within the center there were a few artist, musician. There is a few churches in the row of buildings. The piazza becomes busy at night with the fountains lite up. It's worth stopping by to view the square day or night.
A large, beautiful plaza with more amazing, Roman architecture. Visited on a Saturday, during summer and it was really busy. There's plenty of beautiful things to see here. It was really hot the day we visited, so this was a quick stop for us and we spent most of it in the shade. Definitely another amazing tourist attraction that needs to be visited.
Piazza Navona is a public open space in Rome, which was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian. The ancient Romans went there to watch the agones, and hence it was known as Circus Agonalis. There's current renovation going on, all three fountains have been covered.
Today was my first night in Rome & we had dinner in the area. Saw on Maps that Piazza Navona was only a block away and figured why not do a quick little sight seeing before heading back to the hotel. Unfortunately, I did not get to see Piazza Navona in all of its glory. I figured they were doing restoration but wasn't sure until I looked it up online. Piazza Navona, and Rome as a city in general, is going through a "monumental facelift" for Roman Catholic's Holy Year, 2025. Kind of a bummer I was not able to actually see the fountains here but Sant'Agnese in Agone still looked magnificent.
Oh, how I just LOVED roaming around Rome both during the day and at night, when visiting for the 1st time (09/29/2023-10/4/2023) from Austin, Texas (United States). With so many historic sculptures, landmarks, piazzas (public square), basilicas, and many other significant sights all around the city of Rome, it really is like an outdoor museum. Exploring Rome at night is something I highly recommend everyone to do because not only will you most likely avoid the crowds and heat (if visiting in the warmer months) but seeing the sculptures and monuments all lit up at night, really is something special! My hubby and I got to experience Piazza Navona at night (on 10/03/2023, around 1am) while on a walking tour (Nocturnal Walking Tour through Airbnb experiences- Eliphas was a great tour guide!). We literally had it all to ourselves. We really enjoyed learning the history of Piazza Navona. There are 3 famous fountains located in Piazza Navona - Fountain of the Four Rivers (built by Bernini between 1647 and 1651(my favorite!) and also the Fountain of Neptune. (I can't remember the 3rd one-sorry!) See the pics and videos included in this review of the famous and stunning Fountain of the Four Rivers. Hope this info helps! Till next time, Rebecca visiting from Austin, TX
One of the biggest and famous plaza in Rome. During the brief time I spent at Piazza Navona in Rome, I was impressed by its architectural beauty and lively atmosphere. The imposing buildings, artistic fountains, and bustling street life created an authentic experience of Rome's vibrant culture. I hope to have the opportunity to return in the future to further explore this area and discover all its fascinating aspects. The restaurants are pretty pricey (of course you have to pay the view) and offer sub par food quality. But all in all worth a visit. Fun Fact: Great history behind the square what used to be a race track!
Piazza Navona is a beautiful open space in Rome - the Piazza is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian which dates back to the first century AD. It is also home to the embassy of Brazil and the Fiumi Fountain. The square is quite pretty, it's a nice place to sit back for a little while if you can avoid peak times to get a seat on the benches and avoid the crowds. There are a couple of businesses within the piazza, but they are mostly tourist traps so I would say avoid spending your money here, as you're going to be paying a premium when the quality isn't that good. It's a fairly nice place to visit while in Rome, to admire the architecture and vibes, and the central location within walking distance of most of the city's other attractions (It's right around the corner from the Pantheon) makes it somewhere that you'll be passing along anyway.
We were just walking around when we literally ran into this square. This is what I love about Rome. You never know when you'll stumble upon some amazing churches or buildings. We took some great pictures here. A lot of times you don't even have to go into churches or buildings to enjoy them. I was looking for a fabric store, and if you follow my reviews, you know I found lots of cool places in Italy because of this side activity. We found a gelato shop and just sat enjoying our ice cream and view! Lots shipping around here as well. read more
Another must stop in Rome to enjoy Roman Gothic architecture here. Beautiful fountain in the middle, I was told they used to host a battle game/fight from both side of the fountain. Plaza shape makes you feel like you are on a ship deck. Be sure to check inside as they are gorgeous too. read more
I was so happy to be back in Piazza Navona after 20 years it is one of the largest and most beautiful piazza squares in Rome with three impressive fountains, including Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of Four Rivers) with its large obelisk at the centre, Fontana del Moro and Fontana di Nettuno. The baroque church of Sant'Agnese in Agone provides an impressive backdrop. It is a a great place to hang out because surrounded by restaurants and street artists, painters and musicians who add a lively atmosphere to the scene. This is a pleasant place to hang out, have a drink or meal from the many restaurants that line the piazza and people watch. There is always something going on at the Piazza Navona day or night so it's one stop to make when in Rome! read more
Fun, lively and a " MUST EXPERIENCE" when visiting Rome. I won't go into all the history about the square, the architecture, the buildings, restaurants and fountain. You must put forth the effort and look up the history yourself. However, I will express the absolute joy of the surroundings. Tons of people and fun. Lots of fantastic restaurants and cafes. I mean it. There are actually restaurants in the square that serve fresh food with impeccable care. Not just your touristy stuff. I always advise friends to visit Piazza Navona at night. The music, street artists, lights, and weather during the summer months are much more enjoyable. Just like any big city gathering place, be mindful of pick pockets and always be aware of your surroundings. read more
My favorite Piazza in Rome! Lively Plaza surrounded by trattorias, shops and plenty of interesting architecture. The fountains are beautifully ornate and I greatly enjoyed the live music as I walked around. Great place for an evening stroll or a romantic dinner in Rome. I cannot wait to return to this beautiful Piazza, very enjoyable evening. read more
Take me back! If you are spending a few days in the Eternal City then try your best to find a place to stay in or near Piazza Navona. Centrally located to all that defines Rome, Piazza Navona is walking distance to Vatican City, the Trevi fountain, the Forum, Colosseum and Pantheon. The Piazza itself is inviting and romantic all around with its alfresco dining options and the Four Rivers Fountain as the main focal point, anytime is a great time to visit this spot. read more
This is a very busy area but plenty of shops and restaurants to choose from! For us, we wanted more "off the beaten path", but is very convenient from the metro stop! I recommend going early to get better pictures without tons of people in them. read more

Piazza Navona is situated somewhere between two crucial bookmarks on my Yelp app - Frigidarium with its delightful gelati and Sant'Eustachio Il Caffè with its delicious cappuccino. It has another reference to Dan Brown's Angels and Demons book where the fourth Altar of Science representing "Water" can be found. It is one of my favorite piazzas in Italy because we got the chance to enjoy it in its full elegance without any restrictive fences in plain sight. The piazza stretches northward from Via di Pasquino with several businesses flanking both sides. The beautiful church of Sant'Agnese in Agone is located on the west side while the impressive Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) takes center stage. The four rivers being symbolized are the Ganges, Nile, Danube, and Rio de la Plata. Each statue depicting them is a river god. Legend has it that the fountain was designed by the great Italian architect / sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini to mock his rival, Francesco Borromini, who was commissioned to do the church. The Rio de la Plata statue had his arm raised to portray the collapse of the church. What made this myth very fascinating was the fact that the fountain was completed several years before the church was erected! Just like the other squares, an Egyptian obelisk was present on the scene. It was stacked in the middle of the fountain surrounded by the four river-god statues. Surely, every angle around the fountain was a photo spot. The northern end of the piazza was adorned by the Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune). To complete the troika, the Fontana del Moro (Moor Fountain) highlighted the southern side. And of course, let's not forget Rome's world-renowned cobblestones - surely adored by tourists and highly loathed by locals. What's easy on the eyes could be hard on the feet and wheels. This was a very lively piazza with plenty of street performers, artists, vendors, and people-watchers. I thought it would be nearly impossible to find an empty area around the Fountain of the Four Rivers because of its popularity but patience always prevails. Food and shops are within the vicinity and another landmark, the Pantheon, is roughly a ten-minute walk. If we ever make it back to Rome, this will clearly be a hot destination. I need to make sure I get some night photos here, too... read more
This is arguably the most famous Piazza in Rome. It was definitely on my list of places to check out before we flew out here. The largest piazza we visited during the trip, Piazza Navona has 3 striking and beautiful fountains, most notably the Fountain of the Four Rivers. Fountain of the Four Rivers is the largest fountain located in the center of the Piazza, near the Egyptian obelisk. And it is spectacular! There are also two other fountains. At the southern end is the Fontana del Moro and at the northern end is the Fountain of Neptune. Both are stunning Baroque style fountains that are a treat to behold! Also facing the Piazza is the Palazzo Pamphilj, which was built in 1640's! I would avoid eating here, as all the places we scoped out were quite pricey. We didn't eat at any of them, it just seems to be you are going to pay a premium for that view. We just walked a block over and had a fine lunch for roughly half the price! This was a great place to check out during our time in Rome and is certainly worth a look see! 4 stars. read more

Built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian in 1st century AD. The ancient Romans came here to watch the agones ("games"), and it was known as "Circus Agonalis" ("competition arena"). It is believed that over time the name changed to in avone to navone and eventually to navona. When the city market was transferred there from the Campidoglio, Piazza Navona was transformed into a highly significant example of Baroque Roman architecture and art during the pontificate of Innocent X, who reigned from 1644 until 1655. It features important sculptural and architectural creations: in the center stands the famous Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, topped by the Obelisk of Domitian, brought in pieces from the Circus of Maxentius; the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone by Francesco Borromini, Girolamo Rainaldi, Carlo Rainaldi and others. The piazza has hosted theatrical events and other ephemeral activities. From 1652 until 1866, when the festival was suppressed, it was flooded on every Saturday and Sunday in August in elaborate celebrations of the Pamphilj family. The pavement level was raised in the 19th century, and in 1869 the market was moved to the nearby Campo de' Fiori. A Christmas market is held in the piazza. read more
Piazza Navona is full of tourists during the holiday season. The square is converted into a seasonal fair around this time. Think holiday treats, ornaments, knick-knacks, paintings, street performers and gypsies. Beware of pick-pockets! The theme is the Feast of Epiphany and features the Epiphany witch which is a version of Father Christmas in Italy. Piazza Navona has long been a meeting place for all Romans. There are open-air cafes, restaurants, a museum, and a church that flank this square. The piazza is home to Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers (1647-1651). Bernini's rival Barromini was originally given the commission but it was passed on to Bernini by Pope Innocent X. The Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone (1670) has a front facade that was designed by Barromini. The piazza displays the best of Baroque art in all of Rome. Our Contiki group met here before moving on to other destinations within the city. Since it is located in Central Rome, it's easy to find on a map and via roads. The Fountain of the Four Rivers is quite beautiful and the there's an obelisk that is located nearby. It's amazing to see something that has survived several hundred years and probably will continue to survive after we are long gone. Simply amazing and worth the visit. read more
Piazza Navona is my favorite pedestrian square in Rome. It's filled with beautiful fountains, palaces, painters and street vendors, open-air- cafes and the church of Sant 'Agnese in Agone. Here's is a short YouTube video that kind of captures what the square is like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5BWiODK9Vs The central and largest of the three fountains is the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) and was designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope Innocent X. The fountain was unveiled on June 12, 1651. There is a smaller fountain called the Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) which is located at the north end of the plaza. The third fountain, La Fontana del Moro (the Moor Fountain), is located at the southern end of the piazza. See my photos for all three of them. Sant' Agnese in Agone is the beautiful white Baroque church next to the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. Bernini, who designed the Fontana also helped in the building of this church. I rated the Piazza Navona 5 stars because I was there early on a Sunday morning and there weren't too many people. Had I gone later in the day when it was crowded I would most likely have taken a star off. Also, I rated this one star higher than the Trevi Fountain because at least you have room to walk around, stretch your legs and grab something to eat at a cafe. The Piazza Navona was featured in the film "Angels & Demons". Thank you Tess M. for reminding me about that. read more

We came to this Piazza as various guides mentioned that the Christmas Markets here were the best in Roma. I think the markets were indeed pretty decent, but what made this a spectacular Piazza was the lovely fountains designed by the sculptor Bernini and also the Sant'Agnese in Agone church! All around the Piazza, stand perfect examples of Baroque architecture, and so absolutely recommend coming and checking out this squre. Also, if you find yourself thinking this square looks familiar its because its been featured in Ron Howard's film adaptation of Angels & Demons as the Altar of Science for Water. Apart from the church and buildings, there are 3 fountains located in this Piazza and the middle one is my fave as it's called the"Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi" aka the 4 Rivers fountain, and one the rivers being represented is the Ganges! (the other 3 are the Nile, the Danube, and the Rio de la Plata). This is also sculpted by Bernini, BTW and then you have a fake Roman obelisk in the middle. The other two fountains are located towards the end of the square - one of them is called Fontana del Moro and the other which I found to be more beautiful is called Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) Indeed a most beautiful square and absolutely well worth a visit! I can totally stay all day here! Beautiful piazza~ Gorgeous architecture, fountains, statue, restaurants, street artists, etc. It is so relaxing sitting outdoor, drinking a glass wine, order some appetizers and just people watching. People here are so relaxing, the restaurant won't rush you. This is definitely a very popular tourist attraction spot. There are always great energy either day or night. The thing I loved the most about Rome was that on every street there was something to see. A sculpture, an old building, a grand plaza, a gelato shop....you know, impressive sites. As we walked up to Piazza Navona we entered through one of the various side streets that run into the piazza. As we turned the corner and it opened up to the grand open space with cafes, fountains and some really impressive sculptures. Sure, there were a ton of tourist groups snapping photos with mouths wide open, but we were right in the mix, living the tourist life with them. After spending a good 5 minutes photographing the beard and toes of some of the sculptures on 10x zoom (the details are SO impressive) we basically walked the entire loop of the Piazza and headed on to the next one. You won't need more than 15 minutes here, but it will leave a lasting impression. In the center is the main fountain (Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi) which you will recognize! There are two other, smaller fountains as well, worth a peek. read more
Meh. This is the most popular piazza in from, so expect it to be full of tourists and people trying to screw over tourists. Think Hollywood, but more aggressive. There are a few beautiful fountains, church, and overpriced touristy restaurants. Oh, and a few souvenir shops and plenty of people watching. There are a few peddlers, and two got into an argument over territory. It's was pretty bizarre. You will probably find yourself here one way or another, but if you don't, you're really not missing anything. read more

Piazza Navona was an extremely pleasant surprise, and a nice "palette cleanser" between the "big boy attractions" in the immediate area. (Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, etc.) Working off of a walking map I had, I more or less stumbled upon Piazza Navona, while traipsing about, what I called, the "downtown area" of Rome. I had heard about Piazza Navona, but it wasn't on our list of "must see's," although I would suggest you put it on yours. First, if you like statues and fountains, Trevi Fountain is king, but that's just ONE statue. Piazza Navona has THREE of them shits, and literally 1/20th of the crowd. In a rare occurrence for this area, you won't even know what to do with all the space available to you! Piazza Navona is just a city block of rectangular open space, with three beautiful fountains spread out in the middle. While there, we were able to kind of "reset" and take a second to figure things out and plan our next move, while not worrying about being in anyones way or having to be hyper vigilant about crowds or pickpockets. And THEN, like when the Grinch realized the true meaning of Christmas, you start to realize that you're in a REALLY dope area! The statues/fountains are amazing, and I even started to look up Piazza Navona facts while I was there. (Did you know they used to flood the plaza and let people swim in the square?! How is that even POSSIBLE?!) There are even shops and restaurants outlining the plaza if you want to eat or buy a souvenir. Although, the only less than pleasant aspect of Piazza Navona WAS when we went to buy a towel at the touristy store, because THREE, (and I mean ALL THREE of them!) workers followed within literal INCHES of me, every single step I took in the store. I guess they were worried about me stealing, but it was insane how closely they were playing me. The Misses and I made a game of it and kept splitting up, and walking fast to other parts of the store just to mess with them. We laughed it off, but it WAS annoying. We wound up paying WAY too much for a "Rome" towel, but only because it was approximately one BILLION degrees, and we wanted something that we could dip in the fountain and keep wet to keep us cool. While you shouldn't go to Rome FOR Piazza Navona, I think you'd be a fool if you were in the area and didn't stop by. Seriously, it was WAY better than the Vatican. Ugh, that place. read more

This is a great Plaza that my son, nephew and I stumbled upon when heading to The Pantheon. Beautiful fountain and tons of vendors, and restaurants near by. We were there in the heat of summer, and after walking around for most of the morning, the boys and I were quite warm when we arrived, and before I knew it the boys had dunked their heads into the fountain ( I don't recommend this since it's mostly frowned upon by security ), and when they came up, they seemed refreshed. I did put my hand in and DAMN that waters COLD !!! No wonder why they looked as if they couldn't catch their breath. Excellent place to enjoy lunch and an Italian ice. Ciao read more

Lovely area in the middle of Rome. This grand central plaza is a wide space that's filled with livelihood. There is typically some music playing, courtesy of a street performer with a guitar or some sort of instrument. You'll also find street performers that are meant to catch your eye (and hopefully a few euros in change) and some vendors that's selling art or some obviously-fake handbags. What I like most about this area is the amount of wandering around you can do in addition to the sightseeing and picturesque scenery thanks to the architecture and fountains. Don't forget about the tall obelisk right at the heart of this plaza! With many cafes and restaurants to pick from in this area, you're bound to find some good eats (which we did) with some luck, and maybe some Yelp research beforehand ;) Enjoy! read more
One of the best plazas in the city. 2 nice fountains on the ends, one spectacular monument of a fountain in the center. The detail and expressions on the faces, the level of meticulous work on the hands and animals is superior to most. Be sure to look up on wikipedia or other sites as to the special history of all three fountains and this origins, which come in different periods. The amount of symbolism in the center fountain is fascinating, as it describes what was a nation in the midst of colonialism and power. The church off of the square is also a must-see. What remains of the mosaics and frescos only opens the imagination to the level of artistic power this region held. This is one of the few fountains you can actually drink from. Look it up to make sure you are drinking from the right one! read more

This place is nice but it gets really really packed and I overrun with tourist. What a hidden gem! We accidentally stumbled onto this beautiful area. The fountains were so detailed, and it wasn't nearly as populated as Trevi fountain so we were able to take our time to admire all that this area had to offer. It's definitely worth the walk through, especially on a nice day. We ended up spending about an hour here on our way elsewhere. read more
Go here because it is a must-see. It is a beautiful square, and a nice place to pause during a day of intense walking and sight-seeing. There are however, many other piazza's to enjoy. Because the square is large, the hoards of tourist didn't bother us too much. There were some fun street art going on (watch your pockets). We didn't eat in this area or buy anything, as we knew it would come with all the tourist prices and fixings that we weren't interested in. One of the things that really diminishes your experience in this square, is the roving touts that will constantly come up to you trying to sell you their wares, and not taking no for an answer. Just be kind but firm with your "No." Any slight hesitation on your part will give them hope, and they won't stop pitching until you buy something just to send them away. There are beautiful fountains, a church, and some restaurants that fill this piazza. It also blocks out the hustle and bustle and street noises that you'll find just one street over, which sets a nice tranquility. read more

Piazza Navona was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian in the 1st century where the ancient Romans watched games in a stadium area. The square is beautiful with Fountain of the Four Rivers which stands in the center was built in 1651. Also located in Piazza Navona is the gorgeous Fountain of Neptune which was built in 1574. Yey!! Come walk it: see it: photograph it! Come hang at night. Bring your teen friends or 20 something peeps. Try drinking here by the water! Just don't eat!!! Like many amazing landmarks in Rome: this ones also a tourist attraction. We just walk here just because. I also enjoy eavesdropping on local Italians merchants and servers as we walk by! ( yes: that's why I'll never buy: eat your food) And my Italian family will beat you up if you try to come up to us to sell anything!!! Teehe! But overall though: they have hidden underground museums, secret operas, the beautiful cathedral and a gaggle of people/ things/merchants: gelaterias . You don't come here during the day time. You walk by here. But night: grab some wine, friends and just come hang out! It is a beautiful piazza. No need to fuss! read more
This is a very popular piazza so expect the crowds. And yes, the peddlers selling the selfie sticks. There were possibly more peddlers than visitors to the piazza. This is, basically, the reason I plan on never visiting Rome again-they are aggressive and it takes so much from what should be a beautiful and historic trip. The fountain here is a hallmark of this piazza and is beautiful. Again it'd be more lovely if I were not being harassed every 5 feet to buy a selfie stick I clearly do not want. I understand people are trying to make a living, but out of all the cities I have visited in this single trip alone, Rome has been my least favorite and it is because the ambiance is just ruined by aggressive peddlers to the point where it's more than a minor inconvenience. read more

Piazza Navona is so long that it has not one or two fountains but THREE Baroque-style masterpieces! One of Rome's most famous squares, this piazza is formerly an ancient Roman chariot track, AKA the race track back in the days. Today, it is one of Rome's most iconic and beautiful piazzas especially at night. Pick your favorite Piazza Navona fountains! Is it one of the Giacomo della Porta's two fountains, the Moorish Neptune in the south or the Roman Neptune in the north? To me, my favorite is the grandest of the three: Bernini's Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of Four Rivers), a beautiful masterpiece recently featured as a main plot piece in Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons"! Under the shade of the Egyptian obelisk, Bernini masterfully sculptured a backdrop for four male gods representing the four major rivers of the papal domain, each with vivid emotions and actions depicting their characteristics like the Nile hiding its head as its source was unknown at that time. The piazza is also surrounded by popular gelateria like Grom and restaurants, but you don't need to dine here to enjoy this classic Roman piazza. Simply stroll here day or night and feel the jovial atmosphere! Since it's located essentially in the center of Rome's historic center, it's hard to miss and really, why would you? I definitely recommend swinging by to see the beautiful Piazza Navona and its beautiful fountains. --- tl;dr version: 1) Formerly an ancient Roman racetrack, now a beautiful piazza with 3 fountains 2) Surrounded by popular gelataria and restaurant 3) Center of the historic center - Worthy of checking out! read more
