I called several moving companies to ask for bids, and got very high quotes without feeling that they knew what the task required. Eventually, a light went on in my head telling me to deal with a piano company, or at least ask its recommendation. I called Barrus to discuss the project. They asked the manufacturer and model of the piano, and whether any steps were involved. (Yes, two.) It was clear that they knew the exact weight of the piano without looking it up. I told them when the carpet was scheduled to be installed and we scheduled the piano move the day before. They arrived exactly on time and took about 15 minutes to put the piano on a piano board, remove the legs and pedals, wrap the piano in a padded quilt that was purpose-made for this size of grand piano, and move it into the adjoining room. The carpet installer came as scheduled. (I mention this because this doesn't always happen.) And the Barrus crew returned the next day (a SATURDAY, for crying out loud) to replace the piano. Did an excellent job. If you need to move a heavy piano, don't call your strongest friends to come help you. Call Barrus.

I had an incredible experience at Murphy's Guitars in Bountiful and felt like I needed to share it…read more I drove over an hour from Coalville after getting some pretty discouraging news from another shop about my Gibson J-45. They told me the truss rod was maxed out and that I'd have to drop down to 11s, which honestly felt like a gut punch after everything I'd invested in that guitar. On a whim, I stopped into Murphy's since they're a Martin dealer and I wanted to try a D-28. Not only did they take the time to talk with me and let me play, but they were genuinely friendly, engaged, and clearly passionate about guitars and music. I didn't feel rushed or like a burden at all -- which is rare these days. When I mentioned my issue, they offered to take a look. The owner, Wes Dodson, personally stepped in and checked out my J-45. Within minutes, he did what the first shop didn't -- properly adjusted and freed up the truss rod, got it functioning again, and set the guitar up the way it should have been in the first place. He got my guitar playing perfectly with the 13s I wanted, with great action and feel. Total night-and-day difference. I can't say enough about the level of care, honesty, and skill I experienced here. These guys know what they're doing, and more importantly, they actually care. Murphy's Guitars has absolutely earned my business going forward. If you're anywhere in Utah and need a shop you can trust, this is the place.

I came to the Piano Gallery several months ago in my search for the right piano to bring home with…read moreme. The selection of acoustic pianos was very good, and I would have loved to bring one of them home with me. Sadly, my living conditions require something I can plug headphones into, so that's where I set my sights. Considering the problems plaguing a lot of retail stores with getting inventory in, the selection was still very good. There were a lot of electronic options ranging across the price spectrum. I found the staff to be courteous and honest about what I could expect if I wanted something that wasn't currently in stock, which I appreciated. There were no false promises, even if it meant losing my business. I decided on a Yamaha CSP-170 that they had in stock. The delivery guys were punctual and respectful as they unboxed the piano and set it up for me. I returned to the store a handful of times with questions and concerns. They have their own people who come out to do service calls and this is something I almost needed to use, but the issue I had resolved itself. My experience is mostly positive, though the things I was so-so about was that I felt like it was a little hard to schedule a time with the repair person that worked with my schedule. I would recommend checking out this location if you're in the market for some type of piano instrument--whether that is an acoustic or electronic.

Normally that's a joke, but with the recent quakes, I got unnecessarily nervous that it was going to fall on my cats or something. So I did a quick google search to find 'piano repair' and most places say they do repairs, but they just mean repairs to the keys and mechanism, not to the piano structure. I made online inquiries to two places. The other place took 2 days to get back to me, and they said they didn't do that kind of repair (although they did give me a recommendation for somewhere else). Piano Gallery (Jonny) called me that same morning, and was able to come out the next day. He checked in with me later on my type of piano to make sure he brought all the right parts. He showed up on time, gave me a call to verify parking, and was friendly and easy to work with. He showed me an at-home method to prop up my piano (bench + books), took off the leg, and fixed the screws for me. When he was finished he also checked the other legs and answered other questions I had about the piano. He recommended a tuner who could help me fix the sticky keys. He also noticed that my music desk was missing and gave me recommendations on how I could get the music stand to stay up in a better position without the desk, and told me the method to use to stain the pieces of the piano that really needed retouching. In other words, he came for a simple job, he did it fast, and he helped me make a plan to improve my piano overall. I was impressed at the service and really grateful that everything was taken care of, and am enjoying my non-wobbly piano. I don't remember ever stepping inside the Piano Gallery, although I've driven past multiple times, but I am super happy with their service!
