Horrible company. my wife and I had dental insurance with them since 2018. We had their basic coverage plan, however they did not offer as much as other company plans . Physicians mutual was substantially more expensive also than other better plans. They did not process some payments properly as well as misleading us as to what they were doing !!! read more

They were great in the beginning. But they make it almost impossible to cancel. You have to do it in writing , but they don't give you a cancellation form. They say to call them first and then send it in writing and then wait and wait. read more

They don't really pay that much towards dental. There isn't any good dental insurance for Medicare people.

I would say read the exclusions in policy but its near impossible without knowledge of common problems in dentistry. This company definitely advertises like they will cover major dental work (Premier policy) and The facts are they WILL NOT and Legally they cover themselves by excluding nearly everything major. This company cant/wont or not able to keep their in-network dentist website up to date, my old dentist 8 years retired is listed as current. I called PM & they kept telling me to look at the website "to find a dentist" - pathetic, they make no effort in customer service only care about raking in $$$$$ They send me a letter 2 months after starting a policy asking me if I need to make mailing address corrections ?! Hey PM you have my email & if my address was not current (like your website) then I would not receive your letter! This turned out to be a total waste of time. I paid over a year worth of premiums for dental insurance for my daughter. She couldn't find a dental practice in our area (north of Milwaukee, WI) that would take this insurance. She called a couple of times to get assistance from the company to help. When my daughter would call a practice identified on their website the practice said they didn't accept Physicians Mutual. The long and short of it was she never had a cleaning/check-up as she couldn't find a dental office. Their TV advertising is deceptive. read more

In their advertisements they tell you that you can go to any dentist. You cannot. Most of the dentists in my area are considered to be "out of network". Few dentists in our community accept Physicians Mutual Dental insurance. read more

Finally got a hold of someone only to be told my account was on hold but I was still receiving newsletters about my account. My mother had a life insurance policy through this company. I will say this: if you want business done the old fashioned way, this is the place for you. I'm 100% sure that they don't have electronic files of anything. They don't communicate between departments, their system of verifying is antiquated, and they lie. I called 3 different times to find out what I need to do and was given 3 different stories. I had to mail in the death certificate and was told AFTER the fact that I was supposed to write that I wanted it back on my correspondence. What I told them that I was never told this, it became my fault that I didn't guess what their policy was. Later I was told that a note had been placed and I would get it back *spoiler - this did not happen, the last time, I was told it would automatically be sent once the check was cashed. Well, supposedly it's been sent. A very important legal document, and it's been lost. Did they offer anything to replace? Nope, they blamed the Postal Service. Did they send this legal document registered? Also, no. I think they just tossed it to the wind with a hope that it would magically find it's way back to me. When I called to find out where this document was and when I can expect it, I was told that I could not speak to a supervisor on my 3rd call but that they would "leave a message" for one of their team leads to call me back. Unfortunately, I have missed both calls because I have a life and this weird hobby that I call my job which requires me to pay attention to it. Was I given a direct number or email? Yet, again. No. If I wish to speak to someone, I get to call the general 800 number, go through my whole complaint again, wait for another phone call, miss that phone call and then rinse and repeat. If you want the crappiest least compassionate customer service experience of your life. This is the place for you. read more

I paid premiums for 3+ years and went to use the dental services and received a bill for $5493! Physicians Mutual paid $463. What a scam! They don't tell you this upfront. You pay and pay and then need them and you don't get anything they say they pay unless you sue them. Save your "premium" money and pay out of pocket. this company is a complete fraud! i paid for years and when i needed some dental work they wouldn't basically cover anything. i got a series of x rays at one dentist and they did cover the initial x-rays but informed me i i wasn't eligible for another set of x rays for 5 more years......about the only thing they will cover is the lollipop you get at the dental receptionists front desk. avoid this fraudulent company at all cost, and the only reason they get good reviews on other websites is because the employees of this fake company are posting them themselves. avoid this company at all costs....there are much better options. read more

I can't stand this company. My aunt has a long-term care policy with them and has had it for decades. After much calling and arguing, I finally got it to kick in when she was in assisted living and it was at last obvious enough for them that she could not take care of herself (prior to that she almost died because she was not capable of it). Since then I've had to call them countless times, because their benefit checks often get lost in the mail. The reason they get lost is that the bank has a long address and PM's address field cuts it off. I can't use my own address because I live in another state with higher rates (she has a supplemental care policy and a long-term care policy). They don't have a separate billing field and policy owner field. Between PM and her bank (which has failed to process some checks when they do show up). I've spent innumerable unpaid hours trying to straighten things out. Their customer service people have always been very nice, but they can't solve the issues. If I could do it over again, I would never let her get a policy from this company. She would have to live quite a bit longer to ever get the money out of this policy that she put into it, even aside from the hassles. read more

I've been a member for over 3 years, and a year or so ago they upped my rate to $ 48/month saying i'd get more coverage. Well, I got less coverage, not even covering my recent dental cleaning. I finally calculated that for the past 2 years I paid $ 1,152 in premiums, but received only $ 456 in coverage. I recently had a crown break off had to have oral surgery to remove the tooth, and i spent $910 to have it and the roots removed with bone graft. PMI only paid $ 210. Worse yet, when i went to cancel my plan, i had to wait on the phone (no way to do this on their web site, of course!) over 30 minutes, and they promised to stop payments, but said i had to go on the web site in a few days to RESPOND to a cancellation message. To date, no message. I asked them why i had to wait and that I'm calling now to cancel and they wouldn't cancel unless i did it their way. they prey on senior citizens who just will let them charge monthly fees rather than go through this rigamarole. My sister & I already have dental coverage for which we pay no premium. We were pressured by a physician's mutual insurance agent in to taking out a physician's mutual dental policy for which we paid a monthly premium of $68. We were told that the policy would be a supplement to what we already have. We later found out that the physician's mutual policy would automatically cancel what we already have through United Healthcare. We decided to cancel the physician's mutual policy. They tell you that if you decide to cancel the policy within the first 31days, you will get a full refund of your premium. I made several calls to Physician's Mutual. A representative from United Healthcare has also called & sent a letter. We never received our refund. We never used the policy, yet they still refuse to send us a refund. On the last phone call we made, the customer service representative told us very rudely that there would be no refund. I am beginning to think that the dental plan through Physician's Mutual is nothing but a scam. read more

This company is a scam!!! I am not happy one bit. I used the insurance for the first time in July, been paying since Feb. Went to the dentist office preventative service. They X-rays, and a scaling because of my age and since I have not been to the dentist since COVID. I didn't even get a cleaning because I needed to get a deep cleaning and the appointments have to be scheduled out for it. Well weeks afterwards, I received a bill for $1,200 because the claim was declined because I have to wait a year for the scaling. First of all you can't get a regular cleaning if you need a deep cleaning , which is a preventative service and as far as the letter from the insurance company says that preventative service is no wait period. THE LIES!!! I also have the vision/hearing rider. Another scam!! Went to get my eyes exam and glasses. The eye doctor office said they could not find my insurance information under VSP and Physician Mutual wasn't even on their list. The doctor office said that I would have to submit my prescription information to get reimbursed. WHAT!!! I have had a time with this crap!! And Crappy insurance is what it is. The commercials are very misleading and I feel totally let down. This is the first time I ever had insurance through this company and overall the experience has been deplorable!! read more

The company is stupid. My dentist submitted a claim and they got a long reply which boiled down to the policy data on the claim was wrong and had to be corrected by me calling to get the right data. I called and was told my policy was cancelled due to nonpayment 8 months ago. They said that a credit card payment was rejected (my card was replaced with a newer one) and that I had called in and paid by phone. I asked, "How did I pay?" They said, "You gave us a different credit card number." Terrible customer service, reps have bad attitude problems, they have no information about teeth, will hang up in your face for asking simple questions. I called Ameritas because my dental insurance papers said they had the answers about my dental benefits coverage, Ameritas had no answers, a rep named Chris treated me very bad and he had no answers so I asked to be transferred to the supervisor, Chris transferred me to Whittney and she was very rude and ended up hanging up in my face. I asked Chris from Ameritas a simple question about a procedure code and he didn't know what a procedure code was nor did he know what a crown was. Neither one had any answers about my dental benefits coverage. When I asked Chris a simple question he responded saying,"I'm not here to diagnose you" and he said it with a big attitude. I also spoke with a supervisor named Vicki. I was nice to Vicki and she started yelling at me while being very mean to me because I wanted to put in a complaint and leave some feedback. Ameritas treats people very bad. I want to know why you have Ameritas listed as someone who answers dental benefits questions for Physicians Mutual and they don't answer questions, all Ameritas does is be mean and hang up in people's faces? Your company has very bad customer service. Physicians Mutaul and Ameritas does not value long term customers. I was treated like I was less than an animal by your customer service reps. No one deserves to be treated like that. Also Physicians Mutual and Ameritas treated me very bad on the phone while I'm in the middle of a procedure, I have a temporary crown and tooth pain but the customer service reps don't care about customers or what they're going through. Physicians Mutual says Ameritas is a trusted partner but they treat people bad when you call in about claims and they give you wrong information or they hang up in your face and never answer questions. read more

These comments are written in regard to their Medicare supplemental insurance. We have Medicare approved plans. Physicians allows 2 years to internally change between Medicare programs if another is preferred. I do not know of another company that allows this transition. We noticed that Plan F costs were rising faster than Plan G, so we decided to change one plan from Plan F to G. After some initial glitch in the transition process, we reached out to their Vice President of Policyowner Services. He immediately got the ball rolling and had a lead agent complete the process and followed up with a friendly phone call. Generally, the company has paid all our claims and has been friendly and responsive with their customer service. Their costs are reasonable and to date their annual increases have been modest. We did much research before selecting Physicians, so far the decision has worked for us. We are pleased with their service and their willingness to reach out to us and make thing work. read more

Please do not patronize this shop-- this will add one more negative review to a dental health insurance provider that has a huge online presence(just google 'Physicians Mutual') ; I am sure this dental insurance provider, however unknown on the west coast, has a huge following in the Midwest by tens of thousands of 'happy & satisfied' Policyholders? My only gripe is that they sent me a wagonload of monthly payment stubs+payment envelopes( I subscribed to their $31.85 individual plan); the fee schedule they sent me was very thorough, & complete, similar to those of dozens of other dental health insurance providers I assume; each paymt. stub said, 'Please pay this amt.,$31.85 on Jan.15, 2016(for coverage from Jan.1-Feb1, I assume) , & for Feb.15th , & so forth & so on. .. I assume this procedure required me to pay $31.85( check,M.O., etc) on, or around the 15th of every month, unless I stand corrected?).. But problems soon arose, among them, they kept asking me to: sign up for direct monthly debits from my bank acct.[ not gonna happen, since I am just a newly arrived customer, don't know if that would be a wise idea?]; 2. Every time I sent my monthly premium, they kept saying they never received it, & then they said I should now send premium payments 2 at a time,ie, $62.00+ each time( but they sent me 12 payment stubs, which I presume to mean twelve separate monthly pyments?; 3. also, I had the distinct impression,that my acct. was being handled by at least half -a- dozen different employees, the left hand didn't know the right,etc.;4. also, if there was any unresolved issues(withheld paymts/), they would immediately cancel the policy,but then later they would issue another new policy, forcing me to keep track of a plethora of different policy acct. numbers? All in all, although I think these issues are not really deal killers, I would like to solicit the opinions of others who may have had, or not had similar problems communicating w/ their customer service? Every time I got a response( some woman named 'Kari'?); it seemed like it was nothing more than a computer generated response letter, ie, they never actually took the time to read my complaint, if they even got my letter in the first place? I am not actually filing a complaint about their service, & am willing to work with them on this dental policy( a word of caution to potential new customers, this policy does not kick in until 12 months of premiums are paid, so that should be a red flag right there, but probably, this is standard practice in the industry.?) The reason I did not want to have payments automatically debited from my bank, was pretty obvious, I just wanted to see how they handled my acct, or when I tried to raise my voice(complaints, issues, allegations, bullet points,etc), & also I wanted to observe if they were trying to 'Wells Fargo' upsell me some of their other garbage( they did try to sell me some life insurance policies,which I may look at a later date); I am sure that in the coming years, their customer service will vastly improve, but for now I am not filing any claim for fraud, but this is their flagship product, their name is on it, they should stand up & say, they will respond immediately to any complaints(computer form letters?):'...We are going to fix this problem & are going to do whatever it takes,etc,etc'. Instead they just send form letters that don't seem to address my complaints; I doubt if they even opened any of my mail even. Although I think this company is similar to Western Dental( another joke); that does not mean I would not recommend them to others, including my friends, I just think they need to work on their customer service?( I am sure that when it comes down to actually honoring a dental claim for services, that would be a nightmare all by itself, as well?) read more

The Agent who I spoke to about Medicare Supplemental Insurance was so condescending to me and told me I had not done research on comparing companies and policies because I chose another insurer. This agent is a perfect example of why I did not choose his company or Him for an agent. He was abrasive, rude and arrogant. I hope Physicians' has a Agent training class in speaking with women. Three years ago I purchased dental insurance from physicians mutual insurance company. I was told at the time of purchase that there was no out of pocket cost and that coverage covered cleanings along with dentures. When it came time to use the insurance I was floored when I was told that the cost to me was well over $2,000. When I contacted the company I was told that if I went with their dentist my cost would have been minimal but their dentist were not in my area. They totally lied about their service and totally misrepresented themselves as well. read more
