The parrot (who's name I unfortunately don't know) sits in the middle of the store, chatting away all day and all night, and you have to drag yourself away from him to realise that this is actually a pretty nifty little pet store. The parrot is the only bird in the store, but crammed in next to him is a cute selection of rabbits, gerbils and hamsters. If furry little rodents aren't your thing, look no further than the back wall, where there's an impressive array of fish, of both the tropical and everyday varieties. In terms of non-living items for sale, Mutley's has everything you'd expect from a decent pet-store - food for all types of pet, cages, tanks, leads, toys, treats. In closing, it's a lively pet-shop with plenty of character and enough items to ensure you won't have to look elsewhere, but you might find yourself going in even when you don't need anything, just to talk to the parrot.

Naturally this store does not have as bigger range of food, toys and pets as a larger store, but its great to have round the corner.

(On one shelf I spotted swan food! I wonder who buys that?) I have two cats and so go in solely for cat food, litter and biscuits. It's good value for money, especially if you purchase in bulk. The staff will carry it to your car for you if you need help. In addition to the main brands they have a section called 'Cat Luxury Menu' which stocks the more expensive stuff like Sheba, Gourmet etc. The dog section is something else. A Dog Deli displays dog beer and turkey and cranberry biscuits. I kid you not. But for the pooch with more average tastes there's a huge selection of dry and tinned food. A great place for all your pet staples, treats and accessories.

Unfortunately my voyeuristic interest in pets of the slimy and scaly variety is all too often spoilt by a shop that keeps its animals in cramped or unhygienic conditions (yes, I know it's not a zoo, but still...). Happily, I encountered no such problems at Tyrannosaurus Pets, an 'exotic' pet store that stocks lizards, snake and amphibians. Quite aside from having one of the best pet shop names ever, this shop is a credit to its trade with a shiny, modern shop floor; helpful, knowledgeable staff and - most importantly - spacious, clean vivariums filled with content animals. When I visited I was quite open about the fact I'd just come for a gawp, but the staff treated me as if I was a paying customer, and told me lots of stuff about the logistics of keeping lizards and snakes that I'd never heard before, despite pet shop loitering being something of a habit of mine. If you're thinking of buying an unusual pet or already own one and need to stock up on accessories, this is the only place you should need to go in Leeds.

We stopped here twice this week, because we found a flea on one of the kittens... good thing we have one all white kitten, otherwise we probably wouldn't have caught it until it was out of control. One of their staff members had to come and assist as some of the flea treatments are locked and controlled. We also wanted some assistance since the kittens are just 3 months and wanted to make sure we purchased the right treatment for them. The staff member was very knowledgeable and also suggested that we begin treatment for worms as it is possible that if the cat was grooming and ingested any fleas/eggs, they could develop worms. Yikes! The staff member also told us what the difference was between controlled treatments, versus the non-controlled treatments. Apparently it has to do with whether the treatments have actually be proven to work. We didn't really want to take a chance as we know what it is like to be bitten by fleas and wouldn't want the kittens to suffer. After purchasing everything we went home and treated the kittens. However, we realized that we didn't get anything to treat the apartment. So I went back to get something to treat the carpet, their bedding, and some of the furniture they like to nap on. There is such a huge choice of items from sprays to powders... they even have foggers/bombs if you are really having a bad infestation or just want to be extra cautious. There was no staff member around, so I just read the back of every spray and powder until I settled on one that I thought would treat the problem and would be easy to use. They did have one item that does not contain pesticides and is ok to use with pets in the room, but the rest do contain pesticides, however, with the exception of the foggers, it looks like the pets (and children) need to be out of the room for between 30 minutes and an hour. I also picked up some vacuum powder... just to be safe. Overall, not a bad location with all of the same items you would find at any of their locations, and they do have knowledgeable staff, I just don't find them as friendly as the staff at the Middlebrook location.

Standard unit containing the live stock, rabbits, guinea pigs, etc, and a small aviery with a handful of birds, fairly large aquatics display across the back of the store with a large selection of fish and aquaria equipment for sale. But in general not the best prices avaliable and certainly the fish dont tend to be long lived once brought home no matter what the experience level of the fishkeeper. The major plus point is that they refuse to sell a fishtank without a filter, though little information is given to the new fishkeeper as to why they need the filter or how to keep it running effectively.
