I was always…read moreconvinced I would hate pho, but when I first arrived in Australia this place was one of the first restaurants some family members wanted me to try. I can officially say I'm a pho addict now. I love pho and I love my pho bar. I've dined in on both weekends and weekdays and have never had a bad experience. It is modern and clean, nice and airy as well. Always start with the spring rolls, they're always stuffed with flavour and perfect to snack on while waiting for your main. My favourite pho bowl is the "my spicy", the chicken and beef is always perfectly tender and the broth is to die for. It's not actually very spicy, so I take full advantage of the serve yourself chilli bar and add some heat to my bowl. The service can sometimes be a little slow but it's very rare to see more than one waitress at a time so I understand, and it's always worth the wait. There's a "Super Bowl challenge" which I have yet to attempt, check out the pictures on the wall of all the challengers, you'd have to make sure your stomach has been empty for days to beat this one!

And here, for $12 you can get a generous serving of it, with your choice of up to 3 toppings. The owners have just opened recently in the little shopping centre off Kooringal Drive right next to my favourite Sushi 79 and they are making a killing of it. No more do we have to drive all the way to Darra for our noodle soup, no more do we need to wipe the tables clean ourselves... no more do we have to ask dodgy or not dodgy? These guys are the real deal. They charge 3 dollars more than the places in Darra, but they bring you the cuisine with fresh ingredients, a clean atmosphere and elegant cutlery and bowls. These guys have put some thought into revamping the daggy noodle shop in the suburbs and on a Friday night the place is pretty busy. They are also the home of the SUPER BOWL CHALLENGE worth $35. Equalling 4 servings of the normal bowl of noodle soup, should you finish it in the hour, you get it for free, and your picture and name on the board of fame. Many have tried (2 women even) and none have succeeded so far... but give it time because the place has only been open for less than a few months. You need to call ahead to tell them if you're planning on taking the challenge but it's very exciting when someone does, they get an introduction with a microphone and everyone looks. It's a pretty big bowl too so it's not for the faint hearted. What a great little place, the western suburbs are looking up and putting themselves on the map with cuisine like this. Awesome Pho. There before me, was this little Asian restaurant I had never seen. With its neon lit 'Open' sign brightly in my eyes, I'm not sure how I never noticed before. So soon after, I called the troops and said, "Lets give this place a try". We made a reservation and upon our arrival I realised, reservation not necessary, they've got plenty of tables. I thought it would have had smaller space in there judging by its frontage, but to my surprise, plenty of room and even a big round table at the back. There were no tablecloths or any such thing, it was a very basic table setting. Meaning, bare table and a tin holding the chopsticks, but hey, sometimes that's all you need. Walls have random portraits hanging and it almost looks like a clinic in there with the lighting and white walls. In saying that, we passed no judgement whatsoever and the troops and I ordered our Chinese favourites. While going through the menu I came across a dish I haven't seen at other Chinese restaurants, 'Morten Bay Bugs'! YUM!!! Oh, it was good. If my caps-lock doesn't say it loud enough, I don't know what would. Highly recommend this dish to anyone who visits this delectable Asian find. If you plan to go to a restaurant for an intimate dinner with a potential partner, this wouldn't really be the place... Unless the person you're taking out already really loves you, you don't have much to prove and you're both only in it for the food. Because let's face it, you don't come here to 'woo' people. You come to Jindalee Villa to make yourself happy and at the end of the day, what's wrong with that?

You can't remember if it was good or bad or why you haven't been for a while. Well... they call it sinking for a reason as this place was just not what it used to be. We had the salt and pepper squid for entree, very promising... hot, tasty... next please. The curry puffs for another entree.. they came out hot, the sauce was a bit of a mystery to us... not red, not brown... not really sweet and sour... there was a strong vinegar taste and smell to these puffs with every bite. Something had gone off, as my husband put it perfectly, don't they use curry to hide these flavours? So if you can still smell and taste it... it's not good. We didn't eat the other 2. The dishes came out curiously as the shredded beef with Peking sauce was more a sizzling beef in Peking sauce sans the shredding... the braised chicken and veggies were nice, so were the braised veggies with fried tofu. The small cockroaches crawling on the wall next to us the entire time we were there did put me off the food as I counted about 4 or 5 not including the 2 smaller ones we killed.... they seemed to just keep crawling out from somewhere. The chef told the waiter that there was nothing wrong with the curry puffs, but we were asked if we wanted to order anything else which was nice... but unless they spray the place, I don't think we will be back. The Vietnamese food is decent, and that's saying a lot coming from someone who lives in an area with one of the biggest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam. The spring rolls are great. I love the bun bo hue, bo luc lac and rice plates. I did detect some MSG in the broth, but not excessively. Pretty decent Vietnamese food in the Brisbane area.

We've been patronizing Kim Khanh for years now -- like close to 10 years, probably through several owners -- and it's the first time I was slightly disappointed with my experience. The portions have shrunk -- I'd much rather they raise the prices and leave the portions alone. I thought the bun bo hue was decent, nice broth and not greasy. The fresh spring rolls were not great. Bo luc lac was nice and tasty. We always get the banh hoi -- like I said, shrunk in size like by 30%. Hope it improves.... it's been our family fave for years now. Sad to see it go down hill.

I was all set to keep to my usual stop at Motto Motto until I was assured I'd not regret a visit to dine at PH by Pho Hung (directly opposite the geometric prints of Motto Motto). I think my secret source knew her stuff. Set amongst clean white walls with black illustrations and yellow accents, PH is a more modern version of their well-known Sunnybank restaurant. Despite it's location they're serving a reasonably full sit-in menu with a few take-away options. Their tagline: "Vietnamese delight authentic food" rings true as each meal is made to order. Once sat by the friendly staff I opted for the beef wrapped in betel leaves and a grilled prawn vermicelli salad bowl. Note to self: you don't need anything else when ordering the salad bowl. These are huge and I'd dare to say enough for two and their special fish sauce is the star of the dish. If you're a fan of fresh flavours, fast and friendly service and a meal that leaves you feeling satisfied and full of health -- PH is your bet in this neck of the woods.

We've tried our share of other Vietnamese restaurants beyond our two favourites - Ca Phe Nam in West End and Pho An at Inala - and they always disappoint. Our favourites set the benchmark for taste, outstanding quality and value. And we now welcome Pho Hung Vuong to the favourites family. Two Phos, a Rare Beef ($20) and a Special Pho ($25), were superb with a boastful broth, fresh rice noodles and inspiring ingredients. The condiments too were generous, just the way we like and expect them, with plenty of bean sprouts, basil, chili paste and fresh red chilis, lime wedges and hoisin sauce. We made quick work of both phos and commented on how much we enjoyed them on the way to emptying our bowls. Sometimes spotting something by chance results in a welcome opportunity to experience something new. And, in this case, utterly delicious and beyond expectations. We'll be back, Pho sure!
