The Pho here is pretty good. Not the best I have ever tasted but it's good if you are in the Chula Vista area and don't want to drive far. I usually get the rare brisket and I always order take out. We stumbled across this place after another not to be mentioned restaurant said 30 min wait... The service was quick we were seated as soon as we walked in, when the food came out was really hot just the way I like my pho and egg rolls and tea. They do wait around to see if you need anything or a water refill and almost seem eager for you to be done to quickly pick up your plate once done. Went close to closing so there were not a lot of people and was a quiet dinner ambiance. There was a random guy with a single drum that came in to play and sing for tips; super random but 1 song and he was out. The broth here is scrumptious. The previous pho I had was Pho Bo, and I like this at least as much as that one. Maybe even more. Professor Google AI does say that authentic pho broth should be clear, so there are people that would consider the broth here "dirty." But I am by no means a pho broth purist, so when I see the little flakes of ambiguous bone marrow, I see umami is what I see. Aside from that, I do see a couple indications that they are trying to cut cost a tad. For example, the veg plate only has a single slice of jalapeño while I feel most other joints would have several. That's not a huge deal as I usually just put one in. However, they are a tad meager on the basil as well, which is bad as I always put in all my basil. read more

They added Tripe to my order, as soon as it hit the table I seen the mistake and asked them to change it. About 2 minutes later a new bowl of pho magically appeared... red flag l was missed... wow they were quick is all I thought... then about 5 minutes later a tasted something funny... they never gave me a new bowl... instead they just removed the larger pieces of tripe on the surface and served me the same dish. There were a bunch of smaller pieces of tripe under the noodles (see picture). At the register they were selling hardware tools (pliers, carpenter knives, screwdrivers, etc). Positive, the place was very clean. I try to give small, family-owned businesses the benefit of the doubt but too many red flags in this one. I pass and won't be back. We stopped by here for some PHO after a day out at Las Americas Outlet. We wanted something hot with soup, and PHO was it! We ordered the fried egg rolls and two large pho bowls, one with filet mignon and one with a combination pho. The egg rolls came first, piping hot, filled adequately with all the amazing stuffings, and came with dipping sauce and a side of greens. Then the large bowls of Pho followed suit, not too long after. The broth was clean, refreshing, and very delicious! They were very generous with the proteins and the noodles, too! We were so glad to stop by and try out this Pho place. The service was decent; the waitstaff was very direct but polite, and they came by at least once to refill our waters. The ambiance is very casual, and I love the bright lights and spacious restaurant. While you order when you sit down at the table, when you are ready to settle the bill, you'd have to get up to the cashier at the back of the restaurant. It's been a while since I've been here but it won't be long before I return. Came here on a frigid Friday night because my kids were craving pho. So glad we came here rather a different place on the same street. Got parking right away and when we weren't even in the door yet, there was already someone there to show us to our seat. Their service is 5 stars on its own. The restaurant is spacious, clean, and inviting. My daughter was checking out the fish tank and even that was clean and spacious. As soon as we sat down, we got menus right away. We ordered chicken pho for my picky daughter, beef pho for hubby, beef stew with bread for my adventurous daughter, and I had the fresh spring rolls and a beef banh mi. The food came out so fast, we were shocked. Holy cow! So good on a cold night. Everyone finished their food. The cashier even asked us if we needed to-go boxes and we said no because we left nothing on the table. Everything was fresh and tasty. Condiments and every utensil imaginable was already on the table. You can really tell how good a place is when their bread is crispy and light when you bite into it. So fresh. Wait what happened? This place has gone downhill and it makes me sad! Ordered the Vietnamese egg rolls and shrimp and pork spring rolls to go. The Vietnamese egg roll usually comes with a decent amount of vegetables and herbs but they were stingy with it this time. Spring rolls were hard and not fresh! Shrimp used were the baby shrimp type. The customer service was horrible. My mother placed an order through the phone for two large well done steaks and one order of egg rolls. I went to go pick up the food, once i went inside I told them my order. They messed up my order and gave me 1 large well done steak pho and two orders of egg rolls. When I went back inside to tell them the mistake the lady in the front became very upset and told me this is what I had ordered. I paid $51 in the beginning thinking i had my correct order, then I paid an extra $19 for my second well done steak. When they looked at my order they noticed the mistake and both the women and man who were in the front began arguing loudly at each other, they then took away the extra order of egg rolls. I told the lady I was charged extra then the lady began screaming at me saying i never told them when I arrived and that I asked for two large well done steaks and 1 egg roll order. She continued to scream at me, I only got refunded back $15. I was already frustrated with the service and just left. This was my go to spot with my friends and family to get pho, but this was next level and customers should never be treated like this. It was my first time at Pho Hung Cali in Chula Vista. My partner and I were hungry and Pho Hung Cali was on our way home. I walked inside and immediately felt space (too much of it) especially for the amount of tables that were inside of this restaurant. It could definitely use some Vietnamese decor, add some life to its walls and other areas. Entire place was clean. The outside could use some plants and should dispose of any trash/debris that's sitting outside of front entrance area. Now for food ... All servers were attentive and polite, always ready to fill up our cup with water. The food came out in a timely manner, the right temperature and presentation. The pho meatballs soup was good, but meatballs were on the tough side. The chicken vermicelli was also good but the some of the chicken pieces were tough as well. The chicken wasn't terrible, but it lacked seasoning. Definitely not as delicious as Pho Cow 7s in National City (best tasting chicken vermicelli in Southbay). In comparison to other Vietnamese restaurant's price points, Pho Hung Cali should give a little more on portioning. The place appears to be getting their share of customers so they must be doing something right. Overall dining experience was good - 5 star service. Not sure if this is the Vietnamese restaurant I would recommend unless it's the only one in Chula Vista. However, would not hurt to give it a try though. read more

I'm actually unsure as to why this place had a couple of low ratings recently because I visited Pho Hung Cali for the first time this week and could not be any more pleased with my experience! I had their pho dac biet xe lua (26) in a regular size with meatballs and it was delicious! Really affordable, clear broth (which to me is an indicator of good pho), and delicious meats. There is also tons of seating and the waiters were incredibly kind to me. One of them gave me extra limes, chili oil, and broth without me even asking and I felt so taken care of :') I'd probably want to return again to try their banh mi or goi cuon because it looked pretty good, but their pho is a great choice for a new visitor. We were going to return to a pho place we'd tried and liked about a month prior in the Sports Arena area, but we decided to try a new place (to us) and support a local Chula Vista restaurant. It is a large establishment. Looks like it could have been an all you can eat place prior to Pho Cali. We were seated promptly by a very nice gentleman. It's a very casual restaurant so you don't come here for the ambiance. The menu has a good selection of pho and non-soup items. We were here for the soup, so we all ordered the rare beef and brisket pho, our usual preferred type. We also got some of the egg rolls to start. The egg rolls came out super quick and we're nice and hot. They included a lettuce wrap and some mint, which is standard. They were a little smaller on the size, but they were tasty and a good starter. The soup arrived shortly after we finished, nice and hot accompanied by the usual fixings. The broth was clear and the serving size was standard for both the regular and large. The prices are in line with most pho places I've been to, but I also consider location. I would think prices would be a tad less here ($1-2 less) but as long as people are willing to pay and feel it's worth it, that is what matters. Note that you pay at the register when you are done. Will I return? If I lived nearby or if I'm in the area craving pho, likely. However, I have a decent establishment less than 10 minutes from where I live (this place is more like 20 min), so we'll likely continue to support them. I ordered the a regular #25 special pho filet mingnon. Our orders came out fast. Compared to other pho places portion wise they had what looked like a small bowl for a regular and for $14 I didn't think it was worth it. There was nothing special about the broth it was just okay. My toddler was with us and they didn't serve any type of fried rice and they recommended some "rice cakes" which turned it to be just regular noodles and plain broth in a very very small bowl for $7. It's been a while since I've came here. Whenever I think of to go eat to have great Vietnamese food and pho, I usually recommend here. The food was good, we had broken rice and pho. I wouldn't get the soda because they give you a can, which is $3. Service is known to be ignored here, which I used to be forgiving about but after yesterday's experience, I am NEVER coming back why? The server was great but one of the owners, literally told us that they "you need to leave. We close at 8:30 PM". The sign clearly says 9 PM. Also, during our dinner service, the staff was really loud. The atmosphere of the restaurant was pretty annoying and it was hard to enjoy our meal. One of the female owners, was sitting near the entrance way talking really loudly on the phone, on a video call. Since I understand Vietnamese, she was basically gossiping and a lot of the staff members were also doing that. Yeah, I understand it was a slow night, but I think it's rude. We also noticed that one of the staff told two men to go clean the restrooms. I went in afterwards, and it smelled like bleach. It wasn't really clean, like there was toilet paper on the floor. The trash bins was emptied and there was no hand soap in the men's restroom. The floor was still wet without a "caution: slippery floor" sign. Upon paying we didn't leave a tip, because we were asked to leave and one of our friends didn't finish their food. We didn't even bother asking for a to-go container. I started speaking in Vietnamese at the end, and the guy who asked us to leave stayed silent. I basically told him that, "we wouldn't eat here again". When we left the restaurant, we saw a guy smoking and loading food from the restaurant in back of his pickup truck. He was saying bye in English and vietnamese, but he was laughing at us, as we were going to our cars. read more

When I got there, I told the girl at the front and she went to check in with the cook, who said that they packaged the rolls even though they didn't. After some back and forth, she came back with the order in its traditional large container. Disgustingly, I didn't realize that there was a long black straight hair stuck between the rice paper until I almost finished it This was such a disappointing and DISGUSTING experience!
