I hadn't touched a piano for 20+ years and was asked to play for our church for when the pianist was gone. I was classically trained from 1st to 6th grade. I had to relearn by myself but really wanted to refresh and learn some things I didn't know before and get retaught. Our pastor at the time suggested Phil. Although we did zoom, and I know if it was in person it would have been a lot better, Phil made it work. He had top-notch experience with the technology since COVID made everyone go virtually. The lessons were phenomenal. My lessons were focused on gospel and church music but I learned things like octave-chord, relearning scales (I needed this desperately), playing by ear and my FAVORITE improvisation. I didn't think you can "learn" or "teach" improv but Phil did. He even stated that he wished he recorded our lesson. Although our lessons were limited (just the summer every week), I still utilize everything he has taught me. I am regularly playing the piano now for our church for 3 services a week. It has been an incredible improvement and a lot of it is thanks to Phil. Seek him out and he'll teach you more than you would ever expect. If he does this for adults-- I know for a FACT he can do this with kids. read more

My second oldest son has been having lessons with Mr. Phil since 2017 and my daughter since 2021. I enjoy watching my kids play the piano & am so impressed with their improvement every year. Phil is such a great teacher; very patient, kind, accommodating & fun. My kids always look forward to piano lesson days! This review is extremely way overdue. We found Mr. Phil here on Yelp and I'm so glad we did! I got excited when my oldest son took interest in piano, but had no connections to a good piano teacher, so Yelp it was. Mr. Phil was super convenient because he was just right here in town. I had to wait (not very long) to get a lesson slot because he didn't have any openings at the time (because he is OBVIOUSLY JUST THAT AMAZING), but he contacted me as soon as a slot became available. He even had my son come down and try and see if it was something he really wanted to start learning. And our piano journey begins. I would consider my son a fast learner and to me, he plays beautifully - all thanks to Mr. Phil! We are coming up on four years with Mr. Phil, which I actually think is today! He is such a hands on, incredibly talented and knowledgeable teacher. His love for piano shows with the way he teaches his students and I love that he makes it fun for them. This review is long overdue! Our children had 2 piano teachers before we stumbled upon Phil Impromptu Piano School on Yelp, and that was approximately 5 years ago. We moved to a different city recently and sadly, it won't be easy to find another teacher as incredible as Mr. Phil. He is not only exceptionally skilled with what he does but he is also professional, patient and passionate! His teaching techniques and guidance helped our children grow in music. Phil is such an amazing Piano Instructor. My kids knew nothing about playing piano. It was just less than a month when we had a lockdown, but he still managed to be an awesome teacher to my son. My son learned so much fr Phil and was able to make my son learn to play piano from scratch. He made virtual piano lesson possible, and he's even way greater in person. I had taken piano when I was 5 but didn't like the lessons much. I remember that I was using the Thompson Piano Course and "Teaching Little Fingers to Play", but none of it made any sense to me and I just wouldn't practice. However, I've always had a piano in the house and love music, so when I retired I thought I'd give it a try again. I searched the web looking for piano methods and teachers that were appropriate for older adults and ran across the Simply Music program. It sounded like something a 60 year old might be able to do. The Simply Music website listed Phil as an instructor and he was located just a few miles from where I live. I made an appointment to meet him and immediately knew I'd made the right choice. I wasn't even a student yet, and Phil was answering my musical questions, drawing diagrams, and pointing out how easy and fun making music on the piano could be. I think our initial 30 minute meeting lasted over an hour. Once I started the program Phil was just as generous with his time and knowledge. He's gifted in knowing when and how to impart his knowledge. Rather than force feeding some pre-canned program on a fixed time line, he waits and introduces things when the student needs to know them to solve a problem or answer a question. As an example, when I was 5 my teacher had me practicing scales which I hated. Phil never mentioned scales until my quesitons and the things I wanted to do required them. Then he introduced them not as a boring exercise, but as a solution to help me achieve what I wanted to do. Now I don't mind practicing scales because they make sense and help me play better. When I was 5 I dreaded my piano lessons. Today I look forward to them and I think that is mostly because of Phil. He is such a gifted instructor and seems to be able to get the best out of his students. If you want to learn to play the piano, and you have the opportunity to have Phil as your teacher, grab it.
