Since that time, my daughter is on her way to level 6 for CM. Mrs. Melton is one of the few teachers in the area that is CM certified. She is passionate about teaching. On a side note, Mrs. Melton is NOT racist by any stretch. I am Hispanic and my wife is Chinese. We have never felt ANY sort of 'tension' based on ethnicity. Too many times the word "racist" is used haphazardly and will, no doubt, result in slanderous outcome.

Although we did not end up pursuing piano in the long term, Mrs. Melton was everything we hoped for. She was great when dealing with my daughter and making sure she learned a great deal in their lessons. Her warm character makes her a lovely person to teach your child. She offers many methods of remembering what has been learned and even adapted to the needs of my daughter when she was struggling in her piano studies. My daughter and I both agree that her piano lessons should be recommended to people of all ages and levels. I was always impressed with her curriculum and how prepared she always was for our lessons. She. Very easily gets a 5 star rating from my family!

I studied with Mr. Norman Ortiz for nearly a decade from about mid elementary school to senior year…read moreof High School. I met periodically for a handful of lessons for critique and tips on a few pieces I was learning on my own. Mr. Norman is an absolute artist, perfectionist, and has the upmost passion for piano. I used to take lessons with another teacher prior with studying with Mr. Norman and the differences were night and day. Not only does Mr. Norman teach you theory and technique, but he also puts the upmost importance on the dynamics of music: how you should be bringing out the "music" in music. Each piece has its own story to tell. Listening to his students play in recitals compared to other students from different teachers it was easy to point out which students belonged to Mr. Norman because they had the ability to play musically compared to the many robotic students looking to only play the correct notes in a piece. He also has incredible patience. Geez la-weez does he have patience. If I had put myself in his shoes and had to teach me, I probably would have abandoned myself to teach. I was an unhealthily shy individual who was very difficult to communicate with. He stuck by me and started to break me out of my shell by being social with me. I still remember him singing boldly loud while playing, actively making himself look foolish to try to break me out of my shell. He will also select pieces that you want to play so that you stay interested ( so long as it's not another pop culture song. These songs do not do much for the student in bettering themselves as a pianist in comparison to more Classical pieces. ) If you do get the chance to study with Mr. Norman, please do not be like me and not fully extract the teachings from him. He is priceless in what he can teach you. My brother and I still play the piano in our free time today. The ability to sit down, tune out the stresses of your daily life, and to lose yourself by making music from the tip of your fingers is beyond therapeutic. Because of Mr. Norman, my brother and I are able to bring life from notes, to evoking emotion from listeners, and even more importantly, ourselves while we play.

Mr. Ortiz has many outstanding qualities as a teacher. He pinpoints weaknesses in technique and works closely with students to strengthen their technique. My daughter's technique has improved dramatically. Also, Mr. Ortiz's approach has guided my daughter's independent musicality. He doesn't insist that my daughter play a piece with his interpretation, as I've seen many teachers do. At lessons, he's asked her to play a passage several different ways, and he's shown her other artists' interpretations, then he leaves it up to her. She is fully engaged and invested in not just replicating a piece but in developing her own interpretive style. He has also helped her prepare pieces for festivals and Certificate of Merit, and she has been well prepared. My daughter has been insecure about memorizing, and Mr. Ortiz has helped her develop strategies for securing memory, like analyzing the piece's form and transposing to multiple keys. Lastly, Mr. Ortiz is a kind teacher. It's clear that he enjoys his students. He meets them where they are at. If they don't understand something, he patiently comes at it from a different angle. We think he is a gem in the world of classical piano.

I found Jackie here on Yelp as a piano teacher for my 12 year old daughter. We had recently moved…read moreto Napa, and I had good experiences with Yelp reviews in the past. We were not disappointed - Jackie deserves her 5 star rating! If you want to become a better piano player and are willing to put the time and effort into it, then Jackie is the teacher to help you reach your goal. As evident from a recent spring recital, Jackie's students are all very well taught and, perhaps more importantly, very proud of their accomplishments. Jackie's piano studio (her living room) provides evidence that she loves teaching, and that each student is extremely important to her. Pictures and lists of student accomplishments cover her walls, birthdays are acknowledged each month, as well motivational statements encouraging hard work. Jackie expects her students to work hard both during their lessons and at home. She practices what she preaches, because she does the same as their teacher. Jackie puts a lot of effort into the teaching of each student. I am especially impressed by the preparation she does prior to my daughter's lesson to maximize the time they spend together and address the challenges from the previous lesson. Each lesson is carefully planned and divided into units that have purpose and build upon previous lessons. My daughter leaves each lesson with a clear (and written) understanding of what she is to work on in preparation for the next week. Time spent on the piano is supported with theory work and online games. Not only do these other methods supplement her teaching, but the variety is also fun for her students. Another example of Jackie's extra effort for student learning was over a holiday break. In the lesson prior to the break, my daughter was having difficulty with a couple of new pieces. Jackie encouraged my daughter to periodically email her recordings of her pieces to so that she could help her practice them correctly during the long break between lessons. I am so happy we found Jackie for my daughter. She has matured and improved tremendously under Jackie's guidance. Many years of experience combined with a love of teaching and dedication to her students help to make Jackie a 5-star piano teacher!
