Joe promised, and Joe delivered…read more When my wife and I moved out of Brooklyn and bought our home in East Brunswick, we fell in love with all the landscaping the previous owners meticulously put in. Our property felt like a botanical garden, far exceeding the standard run-of-the-mill landscaping jobs you see in most neighborhoods. What I didn't realize at the time was how completely unprepared I was to maintain this level of landscaping. Even after renewing the previous owners' contract with Broehl's (the local gold standard for lawn care and maintenance) there was still too much to do. Unfortunately, I have a black thumb for this kind of thing, and there's only so many checks I can afford to write to try and keep things looking good. So for the past few years my wife and I have actually invested money in scaling *back* some of the landscaping; essentially ripping out and replacing some of the more complicated beds that have steadily been beat on over the last few brutal winters and didn't look good any more. When we met with Joe, we were clear that we wanted nice-looking beds, but nothing that would be over-the-top difficult to care for and maintain. And we wanted clear sight lines down our front yard so we could see our kids playing in the street. The overall amount of work we need to do to get our property where we really want it is pretty staggering, so Joe discussed a phased plan that would allow us to get started without breaking the bank. Long story short, he and his crew ripped out the mess of bushes and plants and undergrowth that marked the front and center portion of our lawn. He designed a simple, but elegant bed that he said would look great but wouldn't be impossible to maintain. He took photos of our property in advance, and then simulated his recommended design over the photos via computer, allowing us to "see" what it would look like before we'd have to commit. As you can see from the photos, Joe and his crew did a great job. My wife and I couldn't be happier with the work. We get a ton of compliments on the before and after. (Unfortunately I didn't take pictures of the before, but trust me -- this was a huge leap forward.) Truth be told, you're really at a disadvantage if you cannot do at least some of your own landscaping. Professional landscaping is expensive -- plain and simple. And frankly, I hate paying for it. But as I said in my previous review, Joe is a no-nonsense, honest businessman. If, as the saying goes, a man is only as good as his word, Joe is a good man. I told Ken what I wanted and he said he could turn our property into the envy of the neighborhood. I was skeptical at first. I needed flowers and shrubs. The side and rear of the house were just ugly dirt and gravel. I wanted a side patio of pavers and rear walkway to cover up the dirt and gravel on the sides of the house. A walkway from the rear walkway to the rear deck. There was a shed with a cement walkway that had to be removed. This was no small task. They tore down the shed and cement walkway and cleared out and leveled out the rear yard. They had to remove over 20 yards of dirt and rocks. They had to move a small tree from the middle of the yard to the corner. They planted new flowers and shrubs with existing ones put down new sod . Then install all the hardscape. It was quite a task. When it finally was finished I couldn't believe it was the same property. Now when buyers come to see the house the first thing they look at is the beautiful new yard. I looked at various options (e.g. basement French drain). I eventually came across Marvin at Total Maintenance Pro via Google Reviews (they hold impressive ratings) to ask for an opinion. He came out and assessed the situation and came up with a plan. He even went to the township to chase down folks to get preliminary approval without a penny up front. I didn't know he was going to do this - and appreciated his diligence. His estimate was reasonable for the work effort (and 1/3 the cost of a basement French drain). When it came time to perform the work, a team of 10 showed up with heavy equipment. They explained the process and what we should expect. They finished on time as planned. The workmanship is impressive. I'm confident that their solution will keep water out of our backyard AND from entering our basement. He immediately told me he could take care of both. As we continued talking, I mentioned that my backyard was an overgrown disaster and asked if he did landscaping. His answer was, "We do everything." That ended up being the best thing I could have heard. What started as a deck and fence project turned into a complete backyard and front yard transformation. They removed the old deck, installed a beautiful new fence, built an incredible paver patio, graded the yard, seeded the lawn, and completely changed the look of our property. Throughout the entire project, Michael was unbelievably responsive. I work 12+ hour shifts as a nurse, so I often texted him after normal business hours and always told him there was no rush and that he could respond the next day. More often than not, he'd answer that same evening anyway. He checked in throughout the project, kept us informed every step of the way, and made the entire process incredibly easy.
