So we had to detour, adding hours to our already long road trip. We were tired, we were hungry, and we were paranoid to stop during a pandemic. But you have to tinkle, get gas, and get snacks, especially when your trip randomly gets longer. So, we pulled into Steer Stop. Let me tell you: I have never seen a cleaner restroom anywhere. It was like using the restroom in someone's home, that has just been professionally cleaned. My mom and I were so thankful!! They also had a lot of good food. Not just snacks and junk. They had real, honest to goodness, food. I got carrot chips to snack on, since I hadn't had any veggies all day. I was just so impressed with this convenience store, so far off the beaten path, that someone would put so much care into this. The woman working was wonderful, she just beamed from behind her mask when I told her how much I appreciated her clean restroom and healthy fare. I love when people take pride in their work - there wasn't any where we stopped during that trip that was better or nicer!

We weren't greeted when we walked in, but a male employee smiled at as we exited. The lone women's restroom could use a deeper cleaning. The faucet was a bit awkward. We stop for the fudge, which may well be some of the best in the world. The flavors are rich and intense. We pick up a half-pound or so of the Amaretto every time we stop, then savor it for about a week after. I think we got a little more than that this time, and expanded our horizons to Chewy Praline and Capuccino. Yum!! We also expanded to the selection of ice cream. It's not site-made, small-batch like the fudge, but it is very well sourced and managed at the correct temperatures to retain all the soft, creamy qualities of ice cream and sorbet you could wish for. From April through October, this stretch of I-25 is on the order of sweltering, and that ice cream is the best cold treat for about 50 miles in either direction. It wasn't hot on this November afternoon, but the raspberry sorbet and rainbow sherbet were wonderful nonetheless.

I have been to some super shady places across this country at all hours of the night. Sometimes late at night there will be hardly anyone on the road, but almost without fail, there will be other customers at a gas station. Not here and this was in broad daylight. One Sunday around mid-day I found myself in Socorro and in need of fuel. For probably the last 15 minutes I had driven without seeing another soul. It was fairly odd. Then I saw this Chevron, pulled in, and began to fill up the giant tank on the Suburban. The entire time I was pumping 40 something gallons, not a single soul drove by, pulled in, walked out, or anything else. It was as if I was the last soul left on earth. It was incredibly weird. If a UFO would have landed and chunked up tha deuce I would not have been surprised. Getting gas was pretty smooth. I assume there was a worker inside, but I used the card reader at the pump. As I was pulling out I caught some movement out the corner of my eye. Was it a human? Nope. It was a road runner. No not the muscle car, and actual road runner. We don't have road runners in Louisiana so I was fascinated. What a strange review. Deserted places and road runners. Aww yeah.

Surprised, I found this woman holding a wonderful smelling cup of coffee explaining that the power was recently out and the pump card readers were not back up and running yet. She invited me into the store so we could activate the gas pumps from there. When Callie opened the door I noticed the glass was impossibly clean. The door handle was not gross and sticky. As I stepped in, the store floors were blinding white. Disbelieving, I looked around and saw everything was faced, organized. I touched the counter at the register which I NEVER DO. It too was clean. This is the most impressive gas station I've ever seen. I am so impressed by this and the great customer service I had all at 6am on a Saturday morning, you guys need to know about this. Don't believe me? Go see for yourselves. Not only will you not find trash blowing around the parking lot, you will have a smiling face greet you when you go in the store. AMAZING experience. Just when you thought people with a strong work ethic were extinct.
